Yes—in laboratory studies, sunlight-activated catalysts have converted molecules derived from certain plastics into hydrogen and other chemicals. The process, usually called plastic photoreforming, typically requires plastic pretreatment and is not yet a proven way to process arbitrary mixed waste at commercial scale.
How sunlight-driven plastic photoreforming works
Plastic polymers are long chains, so the process commonly begins by breaking them into smaller molecules. A semiconductor photocatalyst then absorbs light and drives chemical reactions: plastic-derived molecules are oxidized while hydrogen is produced. The resulting organic chemicals vary with the starting material and reaction conditions. A 2024 review describes this two-stage approach and distinguishes it from conventional water splitting, where water supplies the oxidation reaction. Read the 2024 review in Angewandte Chemie.

“Sunlight-driven plastic conversion” is not one single process, and not every route makes hydrogen. For example, a 2024 sunlight-driven thermocatalytic hydrogenolysis study reported methane and hydrogen chloride from mixed plastic waste; a separate photoelectrochemical PET process coupled plastic upcycling with hydrogen generation. These configurations should not be conflated with photocatalyst-suspension photoreforming. Thermocatalytic hydrogenolysis study; Photoelectrochemical PET study.

Photoreforming of several plastics
A 2023 study used mesoporous ZnIn2S4 under simulated sunlight with pretreated PLA, PET and polyurethane, reporting hydrogen alongside small organic molecules. The authors also reported tests involving real-world plastic bags and bottles. Those experiments show that selected waste-derived materials can be investigated in the lab; they do not establish that unsorted household plastics can be fed directly into a system without preparation. Reported catalyst stability
A 2022 study reported hydrogen production while photoreforming commercial PLA and PET with defect-rich NiPS3/CdS photocatalyst systems. It reported stability beyond 100 hours under that study’s experimental conditions. That duration is specific to the tested catalyst and setup, not a general operating-life figure for plastic photoreforming. Read the 2022 JACS paper.
Larger illuminated area and catalyst recovery
A 2023 demonstration used floating carbon-nitride composites supported on hollow glass microspheres and reported an illuminated area of 217 cm2. The work is relevant to research on catalyst recovery and scaling up the illuminated surface, but a larger-area laboratory demonstration is not an industrial plant or proof of commercial operation. A related photoelectrochemical route
The 2024 PET study paired plastic upcycling with hydrogen generation and formic acid production using a photoelectrochemical configuration. It is a related solar-assisted approach, but it is not identical to suspending a photocatalyst in a photoreforming reactor. Read the photoelectrochemical study.
Does it work on mixed plastic waste?
The evidence supports laboratory research on particular polymers and selected real-world items, not reliable treatment of any mixed municipal-plastic stream. Plastic type and composition matter, and pretreatment is often needed to make polymer chains accessible to the light-driven reaction. A result on pretreated PLA, for example, cannot be assumed to predict performance on a mixed load containing other polymers, additives, labels or contaminants.

To judge whether two reported results are genuinely comparable, look for the polymer and waste composition, pretreatment, reactor configuration, catalyst, light spectrum and intensity, reaction duration, hydrogen-yield denominator, organic coproducts, catalyst stability and scale. The 2024 review identifies non-standardized experimental conditions as a barrier to comparing photocatalysts, so rates from unlike studies should not be treated as a head-to-head ranking. Review of plastic photoreforming research.
What still needs to be proved
- Consistent feedstock handling: Pretreatment and plastic composition affect what enters the reaction; dependable operation on arbitrary mixed waste has not been established.
- Comparable performance: Studies vary in catalysts, illumination, reactor conditions and reporting methods, making simple rankings unreliable.
- Scale and operation: Laboratory catalysts and larger illuminated areas are research demonstrations, not evidence of routine industrial throughput.
- Environmental and economic performance: The available sources do not establish a verified commercial-scale cost comparison or lifecycle emissions analysis. Sunlight alone does not make the hydrogen automatically carbon-free: feedstock preparation, catalyst production, reactors, separations and product handling also affect total impacts.

What the plastic-waste statistic does—and does not—say
The 2024 Angewandte Chemie review repeats an estimate that 79% of the 6.3 billion tonnes of plastic produced from 1950 to 2015 had been landfilled or entered the environment. It attributes that figure to earlier work; it is not a new measurement from 2024, nor does it show how much plastic photoreforming could collect or process. See the review and its cited estimate.

Sunlight-assisted conversion of plastic-derived molecules into hydrogen is real as a laboratory research direction. Researchers have tested several plastics and catalyst designs, and related solar-assisted routes can produce hydrogen alongside other useful chemicals. But pretreatment, feedstock variability, experimental comparability and scale remain important limits. Current evidence does not show that the technology is ready to replace established waste management or hydrogen production.
