A reported 2026 method builds molecules with perfluoroalkylene bridges using a bifunctional bis(hypervalent iodine) reagent. The reagent is prepared in two steps from α,ω-dibromoperfluoroalkanes, then used in copper(I)-catalyzed three-component reactions with alkenes and nucleophiles to connect the fluorinated chain at both ends. This is a route overview, not a reproducible laboratory procedure: the available article record does not provide specific structures, reaction conditions, yields, or substrate-by-substrate results.
What counts as a perfluoroalkylene bridge?
A perfluoroalkylene unit joins two parts of a molecule through its two termini. That makes it different from a perfluoroalkyl substituent, which is attached to a molecular framework at only one end and remains terminal. The distinction matters when choosing a synthesis: a method that installs a terminal fluorinated group does not, by itself, construct a bridge.

How the reported construction works
- Prepare a bifunctional reagent. The 2026 article reports making a perfluoroalkylene-bridged bis(hypervalent iodine) reagent in two steps from commercially available α,ω-dibromoperfluoroalkanes.
- Combine the reagent with an alkene and a nucleophile. The reported transformation is a copper(I)-catalyzed three-component reaction. It forms bonds at both ends of the perfluoroalkylene chain, incorporating that chain into a fluorinated molecular architecture.
The authors characterize the reaction conditions as mild and report a systematic evaluation of reagent reactivity and substrate scope. The article record available for this overview does not give the reagent structures, exact conditions, individual substrates, yields, or detailed limitations. Those details should be taken from the full paper before attempting the chemistry; they cannot be safely reconstructed from the route summary.
How this differs from related fluorination strategies
Methods for perfluoroalkylating aromatic compounds generally target a fluorinated substituent on an aromatic scaffold. A 2021 review surveys organometallic, photochemical, and electrochemical approaches to those products, while treating environmentally friendlier synthesis as an ongoing goal. That literature is useful context, but it does not establish an equivalent way to transfer a bifunctional perfluoroalkylene bridge.

Fluorine-containing bridged bicyclic compounds are another distinct design problem. A 2024 review discusses bridgehead functionalization and notes that methods for substitution at bridge positions remain comparatively underdeveloped. Those structures should not be confused with inserting a perfluoroalkylene chain between two molecular termini.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What to compare before choosing a route
For a meaningful comparison with another fluorinated synthesis, check whether it makes a bridge or a terminal substituent, how each end is functionalized, and whether the starting materials and activation mode suit the target. Then examine the demonstrated substrate scope, yield distribution, and environmental and waste profile. The evidence available for the 2026 method supports a route-level description—two-step reagent preparation followed by copper(I)-catalyzed coupling—but not a quantitative ranking for scope, yields, cost, or sustainability.
