A 2024 laboratory study demonstrated a selective way to separate europium from yttrium in phosphor recovered from spent fluorescent lamps. The researchers used a redox-active tetrathiotungstate compound to convert europium into a form that precipitates while most yttrium stays dissolved. They reported more than 99% europium removal from their lamp-derived extract, but this is a bench-scale result—not a household recycling method or proof of commercial viability.
What the researchers did
Marie A. Perrin, Paul Dutheil, and Victor Mougel reported the method in Nature Communications in 2024. Their starting material was phosphor extracted from spent fluorescent lamps, not an intact bulb. They treated the lamps’ phosphor with aqueous trifluoromethanesulfonic acid, filtered out glass, and dried the recovered material. The extract was then added to tetrathiotungstate in acetonitrile. The reaction produced a europium-rich solid and left most yttrium in the liquid.

The recovered phosphor powder made up 3.3 wt% of the crushed lamp material and contained 0.93 wt% europium and 12.6 wt% yttrium, according to the authors. Those figures describe the material they studied; they are not universal measurements for every fluorescent lamp.

How the redox separation works
Tetrathiotungstate acts as more than a binding agent: it is redox-active. The researchers propose that electron transfer reduces europium from Eu(III) to Eu(II). The resulting europium complex has low solubility and precipitates, while the trivalent yttrium complex remains largely soluble. That difference in behavior enables separation.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The team examined the compounds and the proposed electron-transfer mechanism using structural, magnetic, spectroscopic, and electrochemical methods. The article’s authors describe the process as “a highly selective, one-step recovery of europium from end-of-life materials such as lamp phosphors.” That is their characterization of the laboratory demonstration, not an independently established comparison with industrial processes.
What the reported results mean
| Test or measurement | Reported result | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Lamp-derived extract | More than 99% europium removal; Eu/Y separation factor of 1034 | Laboratory measurement on the study’s prepared extract, not a full-lamp recycling yield. |
| Model mixture with a ratio typical of commercial phosphors | Eu/Y separation factor of 2888 | A result from a model mixture, not the lamp-derived extract. |
| Europium oxide product | 90% purity for the model-mixture recovery | This purity figure applies to the model-mixture experiment; it should not be attributed to the lamp-derived result. |
A separation factor describes how strongly the process separates one element from another; it is not itself a recovery percentage. Likewise, removal from an extract does not mean that more than 99% of all europium in a discarded lamp becomes usable product. The study reports laboratory separation and recovery measurements, not plant-scale yields, market economics, or life-cycle results.

Why recovering europium from lamps is challenging
Spent fluorescent lamps contain more than recoverable phosphor. Processing a lamp waste stream also involves handling mercury and separating different materials. An industrial review describes mercury removal followed by staged chemical processing; other recovery routes can involve concentrated acids, solvent extraction, and high temperatures.
Economics also matter. The same review notes that the spread of LED lighting has reduced demand for fluorescent-lamp phosphors, affecting the economics of recovering high-purity europium and yttrium. The redox study and the industrial review do not provide a directly comparable commercial cost analysis, so the reported selectivity alone cannot establish whether this method would be cheaper or more practical at scale.

Is this a way to recover europium at home?
No. The reported experiment uses extracted phosphor waste, strong chemical reagents, and acetonitrile under controlled chemical-processing conditions. It is not a consumer-safe procedure, and the study does not establish a home method. Do not dismantle fluorescent lamps to try to reproduce it; use appropriate local lamp-recycling or hazardous-waste services.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unproven
The researchers reported a provisional patent application related to the work. The available evidence does not establish commercial deployment, commercial-scale economics, or an independently verified environmental advantage. Moving from a selective laboratory reaction to a practical recycling process would require assessment of the whole chain, including lamp collection, mercury handling, phosphor preparation, reagent use, waste treatment, product quality, and scale.
