In a laboratory batch test, biochar made from used coffee grounds and steam-activated after pyrolysis removed more chromium(III) from an acidic solution than the unactivated material. The best reported result was 56% removal with a 1.0 g dose. That is a promising materials-science result—not proof that coffee-waste biochar can make wastewater or drinking water safe.
What the coffee-waste biochar study tested
Kaźmierczak, Radulski, Osuch-Słomka and Zięba describe making biochar from dried spent coffee grounds by heating them to 600 °C under a carbon-dioxide protective-gas flow. They then physically activated selected samples with steam at two flow rates and for different durations. The resulting materials were crushed and sieved before testing. The publisher’s article page is “Water vapor activated biochars made from used coffee grounds”.

The chromium tests compared unactivated BFK_600 with two steam-activated samples, BFK_600_4ml_15min and BFK_600_4ml_30min. The researchers used a starting Cr(III) concentration of 120 mg/L, pH 4 and a temperature of 20 °C, with either 0.5 g or 1.0 g of sorbent. Chromium removal was measured by ICP-MS. These percentages describe removal from that particular batch solution; they are not adsorption capacities in mg/g.

The reported results show a modest improvement for the steam-activated materials under these test conditions. The strongest result was 56% removal by the 15-minute activated sample at the 1.0 g dose.
#1 Best Overall
- Temperature Regulator: Charcoal absorbs and retains the heat of sunlight, so that the soil temperature is regulated and seeds are promoted to germinate. If you want indoor plants to grow healthily, horticultural charcoal is an ideal choice
- Water and Nutrient Storage: Charcoal performs well in storing water and nutrients, and can improve soil permeability and drainage (especially for containers without drainage holes). When fertilizing or watering is excessive, the charcoal will store the excess and release it when needed
- Good Filter: Due to the loose and porous structure of horticultural charcoal, it can effectively increase the air flow in the soil of plant pots, especially for indoor plant soil with less air circulation
- Suitable Size: Horticultural charcoal has a diameter range of 5-10 mm, and small pieces of charcoal that moderately cover the soil surface help plants survive and reproduce
- Multi-functional: Charcoal blocks are suitable for various soils, including potting soil for indoor plants, soil for succulents, and soil for indoor plants with good drainage. It is very suitable for a variety of plants such as Cattleya, Dendrobium, Vanda, Paphiopedilum, and can even be used as a practical decoration in fish tanks and glass containers

Why steam activation may help—and why surface area is not the whole story
The authors report that steam activation increased measured surface area by as much as nine times compared with unactivated BFK_600. But the change was nonlinear: extending activation did not necessarily produce a more developed surface. In the adsorption tests, the 30-minute sample had the reported maximum surface area, while the 15-minute sample delivered the highest chromium-removal percentage. Surface area alone therefore does not account for the observed ranking.

- Versatile Composter Refill: This blend of carbon-rich pellets is designed to balance the nitrogen content in your kitchen composter for optimal decomposition.
- Long-lasting Use: 2 packs of iDOO three-color activated carbon, 750g per pack, Each pack can be used for more than 3 months. Continuous, high-efficiency, low-cost, replacement Refills
- Tri-Color Blend: Made by Natural Activated Carbon- environment-friendly and highly efficient. Includes burgundy-colored biochar pellets made from coconut shells, black pellets from bamboo, and tan pellets from wheat straw.
- Remove Odors: Absorbs and neutralizes smelly odors generated by Smart Waste Kitchen Composter- Keeps your kitchen smelling fresh and clean, You'll never smell garbage again.
- Easy to install: Simply load activated carbon into the filter at the rear.
Analyses also found changes in oxygen and nitrogen content and identified oxygen-containing groups, including hydroxyl and C–O/C–OH-associated bands. The authors interpret these surface groups as contributing to improved adsorption. That is a proposed explanation, not proof of one exclusive mechanism. Microscopy showed porous, heterogeneous structures.
What the result does not establish
- It concerns chromium(III), not chromium(VI). The reported experiment does not show how these materials perform against another chromium form.
- It is a controlled batch experiment, not a working filter test. The study does not establish performance in continuous-flow treatment or real wastewater, where other dissolved substances and changing conditions may affect removal.
- It does not show that the treated water is safe to drink. A removal percentage from a laboratory solution does not demonstrate a safe final concentration or compliance with a drinking-water standard.
- The result depends on the test conditions. Dose, pH, starting concentration, temperature, contact time and the prepared material can all matter; the reported percentages should not be carried over to other water matrices.
The preparation is also not a household recipe. It involved controlled high-temperature pyrolysis and steam activation, and the paper does not identify a retail source for the named samples or validate consumer filter use.

How this fits with other coffee-biochar research
A separate 2025 study examined KOH-modified coffee-ground biochar for adsorption of several dissolved metals, including Cr(III). It supports the broader point that coffee-derived carbons are being investigated for metal removal, but it is not a direct comparison: the modification, solution conditions, dose and experimental setup differ. Its capacity figures should not be combined with the removal percentages above. See Hu et al., “Adsorption of Cu(II), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cr(III) from aqueous solutions using modified coffee grounds biochar”.

The publisher’s page for the steam-activated biochar paper lists an issue date of November 2026, which is after October 4, 2026. The page provides the study details, but the available information does not resolve whether that date reflects a future issue listing, advance online publication or a metadata error. Its timing should therefore be described as listed by the publisher rather than treated as settled publication chronology.
Quick Recap

- 【Safe Material】These activated carbon filters (fibrous) are made of high-quality powdered activated carbon as the adsorption material, and the polymer binding material is used to attach the carbon to the fiber. The thickness is 8-10mm. Thick and dense carbon filters can effectively absorb and capture food odor in the compost bin, they are environmental friendly, tear-resistant and safe to use.
- 【Functions】Effective at blocking unwanted odors. Absorbing odors from liquids and gases, ideal for capturing carbon-based impurities or organic chemicals, helping to improve indoor air quality by regulating composting emissions to ensure a clean house.
- 【Pack of 10】One pack includes 10 activated carbon filters. One fitler can last approx 2 months 3 months. It will also depend on what is being put in the food waste caddy, the weather and many other factors, so it's possible that it lasts only few weeks. But anyway you can just replace it when you find it is time to do so. Be warned, don't leave them in the bin too long when old or they will grow and accumulate rot.
- 【About the Shape and Size】These square filters are 5inches x 5inches, fits square compost bin lids better. You don't have to trim round filters to waste. If you have double-sided tape, you can stick it to the back of any compost bin lid even there's no customized fitment for replace filters(The double-sided tape is not included in the package).
- 【Long-Lasting Performance】Our filters provide complete, long-lasting odor protection with a dense layer of activated charcoal that has a particle size of 20 microns, and can last up to 4 months.
