India’s peak electricity demand in FY 2024–25 reached 249,856 MW, exceeding the Central Electricity Authority’s earlier projection of 244,565 MW by 5,291 MW, or about 2.2%. That is consistent with stronger electricity needs in a growing economy, but it is not proof of economic growth on its own: heat and demand for cooling also played a major role.
How far did India’s power demand exceed the forecast?
The CEA’s 20th Electric Power Survey, published in November 2022, projected a FY 2024–25 peak demand of 244,565 MW. The CEA’s Growth Book 2025 later recorded actual peak demand of 249,856 MW. Comparing those figures gives an overshoot of 5,291 MW—approximately 2.2% above the forecast.

This is a comparison of peak demand with peak demand for the same fiscal year. It does not compare annual electricity consumption with a forecast, nor does it measure GDP growth. The Ministry of Power separately described the maximum demand met during the year as about 250 GW.

What does the increase say about India’s economy?
Electricity demand is a useful indicator of activity, but it has more than one driver. The International Energy Agency reported that India’s electricity demand grew 5.8% year on year in 2024 amid strong economic activity and electrification. It also attributed much of the 8.5% increase in consumption during the first half of 2024 to unusually intense, prolonged heatwaves and the resulting need for cooling. Milder weather moderated demand in the second half.

The forecast miss therefore fits a picture of rising electricity needs, but it cannot isolate economic expansion from weather-sensitive cooling or other influences. It should be read as one signal of demand—not as a standalone measure of economic performance.
Peak demand is different from annual electricity use
Peak demand is the highest load at a particular moment, measured in megawatts (MW). It reflects how much power the system must supply at its busiest point. Annual energy requirement or consumption measures electricity over a period and is reported in units such as million units (MU) or billion units (BU). The two measures answer different questions and should not be compared as if they were interchangeable.
Did the country meet the demand?
The Ministry of Power said India “had successfully met the all-time maximum demand of 250 GW in Financial Year (FY) 2024-25.” It also said energy supplied was broadly commensurate with energy requirement, with a marginal national energy-supply gap generally linked to constraints in state transmission or distribution networks.
A national supply statement does not establish that every location had unconstrained networks or uninterrupted electricity service. Local delivery depends on transmission and distribution as well as generation and system-wide supply.

What does the CEA project for FY 2031–32?
The CEA’s 20th Electric Power Survey projects peak demand of 366.4 GW and annual electrical energy requirement of 2,473.8 BU for FY 2031–32. These are planning projections, not actual results. The peak-demand figure concerns the system’s highest load; the energy-requirement figure concerns electricity over the full year.
