A Steam Deck can be configured to run Nintendo Switch games through third-party emulator software on SteamOS. That establishes technical possibility—not that every game will launch, run smoothly, or be simple to set up.
What “emulate Switch” means on Steam Deck
Steam Deck does not run Switch games natively. The setup documented by EmuDeck’s Ryujinx guide for SteamOS uses an emulator and requires game files, keys, and firmware. EmuDeck also describes ways to launch the emulator in desktop or game mode and add individual game entries to Steam using Steam ROM Manager.

This is a third-party software setup, not a Valve feature. The guide describes a setup path; it does not establish that every emulator build or fork is official, currently available, or supported by Valve. Availability and instructions can change, so consult the project’s current documentation before following a setup.
Will a particular Switch game work?
That depends on the individual title. Three separate questions matter: whether the emulator can be configured, whether the game boots, and whether it performs acceptably with the settings and controls you want. The EmuDeck guide explains setup, but it is not a current compatibility list or performance benchmark. It does not establish that a specific game works or reaches a particular frame rate.

- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
Steam Deck Verified ratings do not answer that question. Valve’s Verified program reviews games in the Steam catalog for Deck compatibility; a rating is not evidence that a Switch title runs through an emulator.
What setup involves
At a high level, the documented Ryujinx workflow involves providing the emulator with game files, keys, and firmware, then choosing how to launch it. EmuDeck’s guide covers the expected file locations and Steam ROM Manager integration. Exact steps can vary as software changes, and the guide does not make the underlying files available or determine whether obtaining them is lawful.

Before choosing a game or emulator build, look for current, title-specific evidence about whether it boots, its stability and performance, setup complexity, and any input requirements. The sources here do not support ranking individual Switch games or builds.
Storage, offline use, and legal considerations
A microSD card is an optional way to add storage. Valve says Steam Deck supports booting from microSD and can format cards for use, as described in its Steam Deck FAQ. A card provides storage capacity; it is not evidence of improved emulation speed or compatibility.
Rank #3
Valve’s FAQ says installed games can generally be played offline unless a particular game requires an internet connection. That is general Steam Deck guidance, not a guarantee for emulator software or a specific emulated game.
Emulation software and the game files, keys, and firmware it uses are separate considerations. The setup guide does not settle whether creating or obtaining those files is lawful. Rules vary by jurisdiction, so check the law that applies where you live rather than assuming all emulation or all file acquisition is legal or illegal.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
