How long can prepared formula stay in the fridge?
For formula prepared but not yet used for a feeding, the CDC limit is up to 24 hours in the refrigerator, provided you put it in the fridge promptly. Keep it refrigerated until you are ready to use it.

If you expect to use the formula within two hours of preparation, it may remain at room temperature during that period. If it will not be used within two hours, refrigerate it immediately. The two-hour window is measured from preparation, not from when you later take the bottle out of the refrigerator.
What changes after feeding starts?
Once your baby begins drinking from a bottle, use the formula within one hour from the start of the feeding. After that, discard what remains; do not refrigerate it for another feeding. The CDC explains that formula mixed with a baby’s saliva can allow germs to grow. Its Cronobacter prevention guidance describes this concern.

How long does opened formula last?
Storage guidance depends on whether the product is dry powder or liquid in its original container. These are separate from the 24-hour limit for a prepared bottle.

How to prepare and store a bottle safely
- Wash your hands and use clean, sanitized bottles and feeding equipment.
- Follow the formula package’s preparation directions and the product label’s storage instructions.
- If the bottle will not be used within two hours of preparation, put it in the refrigerator right away and keep track of when it was made.
- Do not microwave formula. The CDC warns that uneven heating can create hot spots. Formula does not need to be warmed; if you choose to warm it, use a safe method such as placing the bottle in warm water.
- Discard any formula left after a feeding rather than saving it for later.
Extra precautions for some infants
Powdered infant formula is not sterile. The CDC recommends extra precautions when preparing powdered formula for babies younger than two months, babies born prematurely, or babies with weakened immune systems. For guidance suited to your baby’s health and circumstances, consult your clinician and the CDC’s Cronobacter prevention recommendations.
