A 2026 Mendelian-randomization study found that genetically predicted spinach intake was associated with lower gastric-ulcer risk. It did not test whether eating spinach prevents ulcers. The finding is preliminary, and current guidance from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) says diet has not been shown to play an important role in preventing or treating peptic ulcers.
What the 2026 spinach study found
The study, “Bidirectional and mediation Mendelian randomization of dietary intake and risks of gastric ulcer and gastric cancer,” analyzed genetic association data for 226 dietary factors and gastric-ulcer outcomes from FinnGen R11. It included 7,012 people with gastric ulcers and 385,082 controls; all participants were of European ancestry. For genetically predicted spinach intake, the authors reported an odds ratio of 0.633 (95% confidence interval 0.416–0.963; P=.032). Yang et al., 2026

This is an estimate from a genetic-instrument analysis, not a result from giving spinach to people and measuring who developed ulcers. It cannot be translated into a personal percentage reduction from eating spinach, and the study did not establish a serving size or show that spinach treats an existing ulcer.
The authors say the findings may not generalize beyond people of European ancestry and that clinical relevance needs further investigation. They also call for confirmation of vegetable findings such as spinach in larger prospective datasets. The result is therefore a research signal, not a dietary recommendation.

Why the finding does not establish that spinach prevents ulcers
Mendelian-randomization studies use genetic variants as proxies for exposures—in this case, dietary intake—to examine possible relationships with outcomes. That is different from a clinical intervention testing a particular food, amount, or meal pattern. The 2026 analysis supports an association between genetically predicted spinach intake and gastric-ulcer risk; it does not demonstrate that adding spinach to your diet will prevent an ulcer.
Earlier biological evidence is also indirect. A 2008 report on Swedish rat research described a thicker stomach mucus layer in rats fed a nitrate-rich diet and proposed that oral bacteria help convert nitrate to nitrite in a pathway relevant to that barrier. Disrupting those bacteria made rats more vulnerable to ulcers. This animal and mechanistic work did not test whether eating spinach prevents ulcers in people, and it did not establish a clinical serving or treatment. Chemistry World, 2008

A 2016 nutritional-care review included spinach in a proposed food table for peptic ulcers, but cautioned that most plant studies showing anti-ulcer effects were conducted in animals and do not reliably support prevention or alternative treatment in humans. That historical table is not a current clinical guideline. 2016 review

A clinician can evaluate symptoms and determine whether testing or other upper-GI evaluation is needed. H. pylori testing may use blood, breath, or stool tests. If H. pylori is present, treatment typically combines antibiotics with acid-reducing medicines; follow-up testing can confirm whether the infection is gone. When an NSAID may be contributing, a clinician can advise whether it should be changed or stopped. Do not alter a prescribed medicine without medical advice. MedlinePlus: Peptic ulcer
