The Garmin Forerunner 955 is a multisport training watch with built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness and training status. Its transflective MIP screen is the key contrast with the Forerunner 965’s AMOLED display. Garmin’s comparison lists up to 15 days of smartwatch battery life for the 955, but that is a manufacturer maximum, not an independently measured result. The official specifications make the 955 a strong feature-set candidate; whether it is the better buy depends on display preference and the current price difference from the 965.
What the Forerunner 955 offers
Garmin positions the 955 as a running and multisport watch rather than a basic activity tracker. Its comparison with the 965 lists built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness, training status, touchscreen, Garmin Pay and Pulse Ox among their shared features. That makes the 955 relevant to runners and triathletes who want navigation and training metrics on the watch itself.

Forerunner 955 vs. 965: what changes?
Garmin’s official comparison presents the two watches as sharing many core capabilities. The clearest distinctions in that listing are display technology and stated smartwatch battery life.
#1 Best Overall
- Brilliant AMOLED touchscreen display with traditional button controls and lightweight titanium bezel
- Battery life: up to 23 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, up to 31 hours in GPS mode
- Confidently run any route using full-color, built-in maps and multi-band GPS
- Training readiness score is based on sleep quality, recovery, training load and HRV status to determine if you’re primed to go hard and reap the rewards (data presented is intended to be a close estimation of metrics tracked)
- Plan race strategy with personalized daily suggested workouts based on the race and course that you input into the Garmin Connect app and then view the race widget on your watch; daily suggested workouts adapt after every run to match performance and recovery
| Model | Display | Smartwatch battery life | Mapping and training features |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forerunner 955 | Transflective memory-in-pixel (MIP) | Up to 15 days, Garmin-stated maximum | Built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness and training status |
| Forerunner 965 | AMOLED | Up to 23 days, Garmin-stated maximum | Built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness and training status |
| Forerunner 955 Solar | Transflective MIP | Up to 15 days, or up to 20 days with solar, Garmin-stated maximums | Built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage, training readiness and training status |
These figures come from Garmin’s comparison page; they are not controlled head-to-head measurements. Actual battery life varies with settings and use, and the figures should not be treated as a guarantee. Garmin’s comparison does not establish which model offers better value at today’s local prices.
Choose by display and use
- Consider the 955 if you prefer its sunlight-visible MIP display and want the listed mapping and training features.
- Consider the 965 if you prefer AMOLED and Garmin’s longer stated smartwatch maximum matters to you. The feature comparison lists the same central mapping and training capabilities on both.
- Check the 955 Solar separately if solar charging is relevant: Garmin lists up to 20 days in smartwatch mode with solar, alongside up to 15 days without it. These are still manufacturer claims, not measured runtimes.
Garmin’s comparison also places the Forerunner 255 below the 955 for some built-in capabilities: the 255 is listed without built-in mapping, music storage and training readiness, while the 955 includes them. If those features matter, check the precise model listing rather than assuming the watches have identical software or hardware.
Display, storage and durability specifications
The 955 uses a sunlight-visible transflective MIP display. This is a different display approach from the 965’s AMOLED screen; the official comparison identifies the technologies but does not provide an independent assessment of readability or preference.

The usable number of tracks depends on their file sizes and the available storage. The same specifications list a rechargeable built-in lithium-ion battery and an operating temperature range of -20°C to 60°C.
The manual gives the watch a 5 ATM swim water rating and says, “The device withstands pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 m.” That rating is not permission to dive to 50 metres; follow Garmin’s usage guidance for water activities.

Software support and updating
Garmin’s Forerunner 955 support page lists software version 27.09, dated January 2026, as the latest version shown there. Its release notes mention fixes for touchscreen actions during incoming calls, activity-summary scrolling lag, possible swim-activity crashes and a missing race-time prediction in a Garmin Coach Plan, along with general bug and stability improvements. Software listings can change, so check the support page for the current version before updating.
Garmin says updates may arrive through Garmin Connect, Garmin Express or Wi-Fi on devices with Wi-Fi capability. According to the support page, an update delivered through Garmin Connect can take up to a week to download before the watch prompts installation.

The 955’s strongest case is its combination of built-in mapping, multi-band GPS, music storage and training features with a MIP screen. Garmin’s published feature comparison shows that much of this capability is also present on the 965, so the decision is mainly about display preference, stated battery maximums and the price difference where you shop. Current regional pricing, stock and seller conditions are not established here; verify those details before buying.
For a runner or triathlete who values the 955’s feature set and prefers MIP, the official specifications support considering it. A buyer drawn to AMOLED or Garmin’s higher stated smartwatch maximum may prefer to compare the 965 directly. Neither conclusion substitutes for independent testing of comfort, GPS accuracy or real-world battery life.
