Possibly, yes. Apple documents that when a recipient has read receipts turned on, the sender can see that a message was opened. Apple does not say whether playing an audio message sends its own separate “played” status. Here is what Apple confirms, what it leaves out, and how to control what people see.
What Apple says, and what it doesn’t
Apple Support’s About iMessage page says: “If someone has read receipts turned on, you can also see if they’ve opened your message.” That is the general rule for iMessage.

Apple’s guide to sending and receiving audio messages on iPhone covers playing, keeping and expiring recordings. It does not say whether listening triggers a sender-visible status of its own. So two claims are unsupported:
- “Listening always shows a Played status.”
- “Listening is always invisible.”
The safe assumption is that opening the conversation or the message may be seen if you share read receipts. This article is based on Apple’s published documentation, not on device testing of specific iOS versions.
#1 Best Overall
- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How read receipts change what the sender sees
| Situation | What the sender can see |
|---|---|
| iMessage (blue bubble), read receipts on | The sender can see that the message was read or opened. |
| iMessage, read receipts off | Only Delivered. Apple’s Personal Safety guide says: “With read receipts off, they see only that the message has been delivered.” |
| SMS or group texts | Apple says read receipts are not supported with SMS messaging or group texts. |
Blue bubbles are iMessages. Green bubbles are SMS/MMS or RCS, which Apple explains on its iMessage, RCS and SMS/MMS comparison page.
How to stop sending read receipts
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Apps, then Messages.
- Turn off Send Read Receipts.
Apple says receipts can also be set for individual conversations. If a chat still behaves differently from your global setting, check that conversation’s own setting.

The two-minute timer is not a playback receipt
Audio messages are easy to confuse with the expiry timer, but the two are separate. Apple says unless you tap Keep, a recording is deleted from the conversation on your iPhone two minutes after it is sent or listened to. That is local cleanup on the recipient’s device. It does not show that the sender was told you played it.
