There is no single setup that works for every smart TV. The route depends on the TV’s platform: Fire TV links through the Alexa app, Roku uses an Alexa skill and account linking, supported Samsung TVs use SmartThings or built-in Alexa, and Sony uses its own TV-specific setup. You don’t always need a separate streaming device. Menu labels, commands and features vary by model, software version and country.
Before you start
- Identify the TV’s platform and model. Check the brand and operating system (Fire TV, Roku TV, Samsung, Sony or another). The Alexa path is platform-specific.
- Update the Alexa app on your phone, and make sure the TV and your Alexa device (such as an Echo) are powered on and online.
- Have your accounts ready. Depending on the brand, that means your Amazon account plus a Roku, Samsung or Sony account.
Most of these setups work the same way. An Echo or other Alexa-enabled device is the voice interface, and the TV or streamer is linked to your Alexa account. A TV appearing in Alexa does not guarantee that every voice command or app works.

Fire TV
- Open the Alexa app.
- Go to More > Settings > TV & Video > Fire TV.
- Choose Link Your Alexa Device.
- Follow the prompts.
Amazon’s support page says: “For the devices to pair properly and work together, your Alexa device and Fire TV must be registered to the same account.” It also recommends updating the Alexa app first. Not all features are supported on Echo Show devices or with a paired Fire TV Cube.
Roku TV or Roku streaming player
- In the Alexa app, open Settings and choose TV & Video.
- Select Roku and enable the skill.
- Sign in to your Roku account and accept the account linking.
- Select your Alexa devices, then link them.
Roku says the skill supports Roku TV models and current-generation Roku streaming players, and its article calls for Roku OS 9.1 or higher. The skill is limited to certain regions, so check Roku’s current support article for supported countries and commands.

What works on Roku
- Entertainment search and playback controls.
- On Roku TV, some commands for volume, input switching and screen power.
Roku limits
- Fast TV Start must be enabled for Alexa to turn the screen on.
- Changing broadcast channels requires an aerial to be connected.
- The skill doesn’t support every Roku Voice capability. Netflix voice support is limited, and app launching doesn’t work for every app.
Samsung TV
Samsung’s support instructions use the Alexa app together with the SmartThings skill. You may be asked to sign in with your Samsung credentials, pick a SmartThings location and authorize your Samsung account. Some Samsung TVs have Alexa built in. If yours doesn’t, an Echo or another Alexa device may be able to control compatible functions through SmartThings. Availability and menus depend on the model and region.
Sony TV
Sony directs users to TV Control with Smart Speakers or TV Control Setup with Amazon Alexa, when the relevant app is available on the TV. Setup may involve activating an account or enabling the Sony TV skill in Alexa, then having Alexa discover the device. Sony’s instructions are tied to particular models and markets (it publishes separate US and UK guidance), so the menu names above may not match your set. Use Sony’s guide for your exact model.

If your TV has no supported Alexa option
A Fire TV streaming device plugged into a free HDMI port is an optional route for a TV that lacks compatible native Alexa support. It isn’t required for supported Samsung, Roku, Sony or Fire TV sets. Amazon’s instructions establish the Fire TV and Alexa link but don’t guarantee that every Fire TV model controls every TV function, so check current compatibility and make sure you have a spare HDMI port. If you already own an Echo, you don’t need to buy another Alexa speaker.

Troubleshooting
Alexa doesn’t find the TV
Confirm the TV or streamer is on and connected to the network. Check that the account link is correct, the skill or manufacturer setup is enabled and the software is current. Amazon and Roku both describe app-based linking and discovery. Don’t assume a particular Wi-Fi band or network arrangement is required unless your model’s documentation says so.

Alexa sees the TV but commands fail
Check the supported command list for your platform and the app you’re using. Roku documents specific command and app limits. For Fire TV, Amazon warns that features can differ by Echo device and Fire TV configuration.
The TV won’t turn on by voice
On a Roku TV, enable Fast TV Start. Other brands and models can have their own power and standby requirements, so check the guide for your model.
