Yes, but only for selected on-device features. Siri can continue handling some Apple Intelligence requests without Wi‑Fi or mobile data when the request runs on a supported iPhone’s local model. More demanding requests may be sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers and then need an internet connection. On Android, Gemini Nano can run supported generative-AI tasks locally through Android’s AICore service, subject to device, token and model limits. The Gemini app on iPhone is a different product: its connected chat, voice, image and camera features generally require internet access, and Google explicitly says an internet connection is required for certain features.
What “offline AI” actually means
Offline AI means the model processes a request on the phone itself instead of sending the prompt to a remote server. The phone must already contain the model, the operating system must expose it to the relevant feature, and the request must fit that model’s capabilities. Turning on Airplane Mode therefore does not make every assistant an offline assistant; it only removes the network path.

A useful distinction is between local processing and offline access to an app. An app may open without a connection while its main AI feature still fails because it normally calls a cloud model. Conversely, a small on-device model may complete a narrow task with no signal, while a larger reasoning or web-search request cannot.

Can Siri work without Wi‑Fi or mobile data?
Some Siri and Apple Intelligence functions can work without internet connectivity, provided the iPhone, language and region support the feature. Apple describes on-device Apple Intelligence models as an always-available option for supported local requests. Apple’s documentation also says Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone, language or region, and that Siri capabilities vary by language, country and region.

What can remain available offline
On a compatible device, Siri with Apple Intelligence can maintain conversational context, answer questions about Apple products and accept typed or spoken requests. Apple also documents local language-model features such as text prompting that execute on the device. These are the kinds of functions that may continue when both Wi‑Fi and cellular data are disabled.
“May” matters here. Apple does not publish a permanent list saying that every named Siri command works in Airplane Mode. Availability depends on the installed release, enabled Apple Intelligence features, language, country and region. A request that appears simple can also be routed to a larger model if it needs capabilities the local model does not have.
What Siri cannot reliably do offline
- Web knowledge and live information: weather updates, current news, sports scores, traffic, web searches and other changing facts need a data connection.
- Cloud-backed reasoning: some complex prompts exceed the local model’s capability and are handled by Apple’s server-side system.
- Requests that depend on online services: actions requiring a remote account, online database or network-controlled device can fail even when Siri itself hears the request.
On-device Apple Intelligence versus Private Cloud Compute
Apple uses two processing paths. The first is the on-device Apple Foundation Models system. When a supported request fits that model, the iPhone can process it locally without sending the prompt to the internet.

Apple says its latest models run both on the device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute. PCC is intended for requests needing a larger context window or stronger reasoning than the phone’s local model can provide. Apple documents a 32K-token context window for the PCC server model. Reaching that server requires network access, so the same Siri conversation can work offline for one request and fail for another when the phone is disconnected.

How to interpret a failure
If Siri responds that it cannot connect, that does not prove Siri has no offline capability. It usually means the particular request was not eligible for local processing, the feature is unavailable for the device or language, or the command depends on an online service. Try a narrower, device-focused request rather than assuming all Siri functions are disabled.
Does Siri work in Airplane Mode?
Airplane Mode is a practical test because it normally disables cellular and Wi‑Fi radios. On a supported iPhone, local Apple Intelligence features can still be available in that state. However, Siri is not guaranteed to answer every prompt while offline. Commands requiring web data, PCC, online accounts or remote devices will not complete until connectivity returns.
A safe Airplane Mode test
- Connect to the internet once and install the latest iOS release available for your model. Confirm that Apple Intelligence and Siri are enabled in Settings.
- Download any language resources the feature requests while online. Some local processing cannot start until required resources are present on the phone.
- Turn on Settings > Airplane Mode. If you want to test a completely disconnected state, do not turn Wi‑Fi back on.
- Ask a short, device-oriented question, such as a question about an Apple product or a request that uses supported local text processing.
- Then try a live-information request. A connection error for that second test is expected and shows the difference between local and cloud work.
Do not treat one successful or unsuccessful command as a universal compatibility test. Apple’s routing can change with software releases, and Siri’s feature set differs by language and region.
Which iPhones support offline Apple Intelligence?
Apple lists iPhone 16 models or later among the devices that support Apple Intelligence. The exact supported model list, operating-system version, language and regional rollout should be checked for the market where the phone is used. An older iPhone may still offer traditional Siri behavior, but that does not mean it has the newer on-device Apple Intelligence models.

Even on a supported iPhone, the following can change what appears in Settings and what works offline:
- iOS version and whether the required Apple Intelligence components have finished downloading;
- selected Siri and device language;
- country or region availability;
- the specific Apple Intelligence feature being requested; and
- whether the request is automatically routed to PCC.
Can Gemini work offline on Android?
Android supports offline generative AI through Gemini Nano, Google’s on-device model. Gemini Nano runs inside Android’s AICore system service. Android Developers says it can deliver generative-AI experiences without a network connection or sending data to the cloud. The prompt is executed locally when a supported app and device invoke Gemini Nano.
This is a platform capability, not a promise that every Android phone’s consumer Gemini assistant can answer arbitrary questions in Airplane Mode. The phone must include compatible hardware, the manufacturer must support the relevant AICore configuration, and the app must use a Nano-supported task.
What Gemini Nano is suited to
Nano is designed for bounded, privacy-sensitive and latency-sensitive work that an app can perform locally. Examples include supported writing, summarisation, classification or other generative features exposed by an Android application. The exact functions are selected by the app and model version; installing the Gemini app alone does not guarantee that all of its chat features are powered by Nano.

Gemini Nano’s practical limits
- Hardware: on-device inference requires sufficient processor, memory and accelerator support. Android does not provide one universal handset list in the cited documentation.
- Token limits: Nano accepts less context than larger cloud models. A long document or extended conversation may exceed its input limit.
- Model capability: Nano is smaller and more specialised than cloud Gemini models, so difficult reasoning, broad knowledge and multi-step tasks may be unavailable or less capable.
- App support: an app has to be built to call AICore and select an on-device model. A phone can include Nano while a particular assistant screen still uses the cloud.
Google recommends hybrid inference: use Gemini Nano when it is available and appropriate, then route unsupported or complex requests to cloud Gemini Flash or Gemini Pro models. That fallback improves capability but requires connectivity.
Can Gemini Nano answer questions with no internet?
It can answer some prompts locally, but not every question. A short request handled by a Nano-enabled app can complete without Wi‑Fi or mobile data. A request that needs current information, a larger context window, stronger reasoning or a feature not implemented for Nano will normally require a cloud model or fail offline.
There is no reliable universal “offline Gemini” switch. To find out whether a specific Android phone and app support local processing, check the handset’s software documentation, keep AICore and the app updated, and test with connectivity disabled. If the app reports that the feature is unavailable rather than merely timing out, the task may not support Nano on that device.

No. Gemini Nano is an Android on-device model exposed through AICore. The Gemini app for iPhone is a separate mobile application and should be treated primarily as a connected service.

Google’s iPhone help information describes text and voice chat, Live, image creation and camera features, with availability varying by device, language, account and location. Google’s launch announcement also states that an internet connection and subscription are required for certain features. Consequently, iPhone users should expect connected Gemini capabilities to need internet access, even if the app itself opens or offers limited behavior without signing in.
What happens in iPhone Airplane Mode?
With Wi‑Fi and cellular data disabled, cloud Gemini chat, Live conversations, image generation and camera-based AI features may be unavailable. A previously loaded screen or a non-AI part of the app can still open, but that is not equivalent to running Gemini Nano locally. Apple’s on-device Siri and Google’s iPhone Gemini app use different architectures.

What still works when a phone has no signal?
When both Wi‑Fi and mobile data are unavailable, use this decision rule:
- Is the task local and supported? A device-aware Siri request, local text feature or Nano-enabled app task may work.
- Does it need current or outside information? Web search, live data, online accounts and cloud-controlled services will not work.
- Does it need a larger model? PCC and cloud Gemini fallbacks require a connection.
- Is the feature available on this phone, language and region? If not, offline processing cannot be enabled by changing a network setting.
Offline troubleshooting checklist
If Siri fails without a connection
- Verify that the iPhone model is eligible for Apple Intelligence; Apple lists iPhone 16 models or later among supported devices.
- Check the iOS version, Siri language and region settings.
- Allow the device to finish downloading required Apple Intelligence resources while online.
- Retry with a short, device-focused request instead of a web or live-information question.
- Reconnect briefly if the request likely needs PCC, a remote account or online data.
If Gemini fails without a connection on Android
- Confirm that the phone and software support Gemini Nano and AICore; support is device-specific.
- Update Android system components and the app that is making the AI request.
- Shorten the prompt or document to stay within Nano’s token limits.
- Use a task explicitly designed for on-device inference rather than assuming the consumer Gemini chat screen is local.
- Reconnect for complex prompts or when the app’s hybrid-inference path needs Gemini Flash or Gemini Pro.
If Gemini fails without a connection on iPhone
- Assume that cloud chat, Live, image and camera features need internet unless Google identifies a specific exception.
- Check the feature’s language, account and location requirements.
- Do not use Gemini Nano troubleshooting steps; Nano is an Android AICore model, not the iPhone app’s offline engine.
Privacy and reliability trade-offs
Local inference can reduce exposure of a prompt because the supported request stays on the phone, and it can respond with low latency even when reception is poor. The trade-off is a smaller model with narrower capabilities, finite context and dependence on compatible hardware.
Cloud processing provides larger context and stronger reasoning. Apple’s PCC is the cloud path for qualifying Apple Intelligence requests, while Android apps can fall back from Nano to cloud Gemini models. Those paths are more capable but cannot operate when the phone has no usable network connection. Neither architecture guarantees that every assistant response is local or private; the processing path depends on the feature and routing decision.
The practical answer by device
| Device and feature | Expected behavior without internet |
|---|---|
| Supported iPhone with on-device Apple Intelligence Siri feature | May work locally, subject to language, region, feature and model limits |
| Supported iPhone request routed to Private Cloud Compute | Will need a network connection |
| Android app using Gemini Nano through AICore | Supported prompts can run offline, subject to hardware, token and capability limits |
| Android cloud Gemini request | Needs internet access |
| Gemini app on iPhone | Connected AI features should be expected to need internet; Google says certain features require it |
The shortest accurate answer is therefore: Siri and Gemini can work without internet only when the specific request is assigned to a supported on-device model. Siri’s more capable Private Cloud Compute path and Gemini’s cloud models require connectivity, and Gemini Nano on Android should not be confused with the Gemini app on iPhone.
