But the evidence is mixed and generally low quality: it does not prove ridesharing prevents crime or makes every trip safe. Its most defensible role is as one option within broader road-safety and violence-prevention efforts.
How could a ride-hailing service affect public safety?
A ride-hailing trip can matter beyond getting from one place to another if it replaces an impaired drive or provides transport when other options are limited. That is a plausible safety pathway, not proof that every ride prevents a crash or assault. A service’s availability and uptake, the type of trip, and the outcome being measured all matter.

The underlying impaired-driving problem is substantial. The CDC reports that 13,524 people died in U.S. crashes involving alcohol-impaired drivers in 2022, accounting for 32% of all U.S. traffic deaths that year. In 2023, 15.5 million U.S. residents aged 16 or older reported driving under the influence of alcohol in the preceding year. Those figures describe the broader problem; they do not measure the effect of ridesharing.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identifies commercial rideshare services, nonprofit safe-ride programs, and public transportation as alternatives to driving after drinking. Its review summarizes evidence that impaired-driving arrests declined after rideshare services entered some communities, but it also describes mixed results for crashes. Arrests, injuries, and deaths are different outcomes, so a change in one cannot stand in for a change in the others.

One Houston study summarized by NHTSA found 24% fewer people hospitalized for motor-vehicle crashes on Friday and Saturday nights after Uber’s 2014 introduction. The reported reduction was limited to people under 30. This is a finding from one city, age group, outcome, and period—not a general estimate of how much ridesharing reduces crash injuries.
A 2025 systematic review and practice guideline from the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma provides a wider, but still uncertain, view:
- It included 15 observational studies covering different places, populations, and methods; its literature search covered 2009 through 2022.
- Eleven studies reported benefits for specific crash-related outcomes, while one indicated harm through an increase in total motor-vehicle crashes.
- The authors rated the overall evidence quality as low. They concluded that ridesharing may have a valuable role in reducing crash-related harm and should be considered as part of broader policy.
Because these studies were observational, they can identify associations but cannot establish that ridesharing alone caused the outcomes. Differences among settings and measures also make it inappropriate to combine their findings into one universal effect.
Is ridesharing associated with fewer sexual assaults?
A peer-reviewed 2021 study by Park, Pang, Kim, and Lee examined Uber’s city-by-city rollout in the United States from 2005 to 2017 and analyzed New York City precinct-hour data on Uber pickups and rape occurrences in 2015. The authors reported an association between Uber’s entry into cities and fewer rape incidents. Their estimated effects were stronger in neighborhoods with limited transportation access and in settings they identified as riskier, including around alcohol-serving venues on weekend nights.

The study’s findings concern population-level associations in particular places and periods. They do not show that a particular ride prevents an assault, that the result applies equally to every ride-hailing service, or that ridesharing eliminates the risk of violence. The result is best read as evidence that transport access may matter in some circumstances, not as a personal safety guarantee.
How should the evidence be compared?

These findings concern different interventions and outcomes. Commercial ride-hailing is not identical to a nonprofit safe-ride program or public transit, and arrests, crash injuries, total crashes, and reported rape incidents are not interchangeable measures of “safety.”

In its July 2026 report, Rideshare and Taxi Safety: Information on Assault Data, Safety Features, and Background Checks, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded: “Available data sources do not provide a full picture of the number of rideshare and taxi assaults against drivers and passengers from 2021 through 2025.” GAO found no federal requirement to collect assault data and drew on federal, local, and company sources.

GAO cited 424 rideshare- and taxi-related assaults in Los Angeles from 2021 through 2023 and 109 in Chicago from 2023 through 2025. Each local count was less than 1% of the overall reported assaults in that city during the stated period. These figures come from city databases, have different time coverage, and are not a complete national count or a rate per trip.

Company reports have their own limits: as of June 2026, reporting companies had not published counts for 2023–2025 or counts of nonfatal physical assaults. Incidents classified under a company’s reporting approach are not an independently complete census of events, and missing or inconsistent data make it difficult to compare risks across services or over time.
Do newer safety features remove those risks?
GAO described features introduced since 2024, including identity verification and in-vehicle recording. Drivers interviewed by GAO identified benefits from passenger verification, but some also reported technical issues with trip recordings. These measures may address particular safety concerns; the available findings do not establish that they prevent assaults or eliminate the risks of a ride.
What is a reasonable conclusion for riders and communities?
Ridesharing can be a useful alternative to driving after drinking, and research points to possible wider safety benefits in some settings. The strongest conclusion is qualified: evidence suggests potential benefits, but crash findings are mixed, crime findings are specific to the study and setting, and available assault data are incomplete. For communities, ride-hailing belongs alongside—not in place of—other road-safety and violence-prevention measures. For individuals, a population-level association cannot guarantee a safe trip.
