To complete a quest in World of Warcraft, accept it from a quest giver, follow its objective text and map markers, track your progress, then turn it in when the task is done. If a quest is unavailable or an objective does not update, check its prerequisites and reread the full instructions before assuming something is broken.
Start with the new-player introduction
Blizzard’s February 25, 2026 starter guide says a new character begins in Exile’s Reach. Its introductory quests teach movement, interacting with non-player characters (NPCs), using starter class abilities, and managing inventory.

That guide says the route after Exile’s Reach leads into Dragonflight story content. After level 10, it says you can continue into Dragonflight or speak with Chromie in a capital city to choose a Timewalking Campaign. These directions reflect the guide’s publication context; game progression can change with updates, so follow the choices and prompts shown in your current client.

How to accept, follow, and turn in a quest
1. Find a quest giver and accept the task
Look for NPCs offering quests. Blizzard’s older starter walkthrough uses a yellow exclamation point as the general marker for an available quest: interact with the character, read the offer, and accept it. Treat that icon as orientation rather than a guarantee that every current quest uses exactly the same marker or control; the game’s current prompts take precedence.
2. Read the full objective
After accepting, check the objective list and map for where to go, then do the specific action the quest asks for. An instruction might require more than reaching an area or attacking an enemy. Blizzard’s starter-zone guidance advises reading the full quest text for extra clues when the short objective does not explain why progress is not counting.

3. Track your progress on the map and in the quest log
Blizzard’s solo-play guide describes the map, opened with M in that guide, as a snapshot of quests underway, their status, and other objectives. The 2024 interface update says the quest log includes a selector for quests to track and additional quest information. A legacy walkthrough describes using L for the quest log, but controls may vary; use the current interface or its keybinding settings if that shortcut does not work.
4. Use map categories to choose what to do next
The 2024 interface update describes these quest categories and markers:

- Important: unlocks features or rewards, or teaches major mechanics.
- Local Story: offers a local side adventure.
- In Progress: marks a quest currently underway.
- Turn In: indicates a quest ready to hand in.
- Legendary and Meta: are additional categories shown by the interface.
If you want to advance the main story, prioritize Campaign quests. If you want to learn a system or unlock a feature, look for Important quests; Local Story quests are optional side adventures. Use the current map legend to interpret the categories available in your game.
5. Turn in the completed quest
When the objective is complete, follow any in-field completion prompt. If there is no prompt, return to the quest giver. Blizzard’s legacy tutorial describes a yellow question mark as a marker for a completed quest ready to turn in, while the newer interface uses the Turn In category. The exact marker may differ by quest or client version.

Why a quest may be locked or an objective may not count
The quest has a prerequisite
A visible marker does not always mean your character can accept the quest. Blizzard’s older starting-zone tutorial says a silver exclamation point can indicate that you need a higher level or must complete other objectives first. Because that explanation comes from a legacy zone guide, it should not be treated as a complete description of every current gating rule. Check the quest text, campaign status, map, and any stated prerequisites.
The objective requires a specific action
If progress does not update, reread the entire objective and its explanatory text. Confirm that you are doing the requested action under the stated conditions; simply entering the area or attacking the target may not be enough. Then check your tracked quest and map for updated status.

The marker or control differs from an older guide
Some acceptance, turn-in, and key-control descriptions come from older Blizzard tutorials. If an icon or shortcut does not match what you see, rely on the current in-game prompt, help, and interface rather than assuming the quest cannot be completed.
