Then use the startup method for your Mac—Apple silicon or Intel—to try Safe Mode, open macOS Recovery, repair the startup disk, or reinstall macOS. A failed startup after an update does not by itself prove the beta caused the problem, and the right recovery path depends on the screen you see.
Start with the symptom, not an assumption
Note what happens when you press the power button: no sign of power, a blank screen, an Apple logo or progress bar, a flashing question-mark folder, startup options, or Recovery Assistant. These symptoms have different next steps; none alone proves that a beta update caused the failure.

Make one controlled restart
- Press and hold the power button for up to 10 seconds to shut the Mac down.
- Disconnect nonessential USB, USB-C, Thunderbolt, and other accessories.
- Turn the Mac on again and observe what appears. If it starts without accessories, reconnect them one at a time to identify a possible cause. See Apple’s guidance for a Mac that stops or delays while starting.
Identify whether your Mac has Apple silicon or Intel
The startup steps differ. If you can open the Apple menu, choose About This Mac. Apple silicon models show a “Chip” entry; Intel models show a processor. If you cannot reach the desktop, use the model information on the Mac or its original documentation to identify it before following startup-key instructions. Apple explains how to identify the processor and start in Safe Mode.
Try Safe Mode if startup gets far enough
Safe Mode can help determine whether software that loads during startup is contributing to the issue. It is worth trying if you can reach startup options or the login window.

Apple silicon
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until startup options appear, then release it.
- Select a volume, hold Shift, and choose Continue in Safe Mode.
Intel
Turn on or restart the Mac, then immediately press and hold Shift until the login window appears.
If Safe Mode starts, back up important data before attempting more updates or system changes. If it does not start, continue to Recovery.

Open macOS Recovery using the correct method
Apple silicon
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears.
- Choose Options, then Continue.
Intel
Turn on or restart the Mac and immediately hold Command-R until the Apple logo or a spinning globe appears. If built-in Recovery does not load, Apple documents other Internet Recovery key combinations in its guide to starting from macOS Recovery. If Internet Recovery reports an error, check the network connection.

You need an internet connection to reinstall macOS from Recovery. A captive-portal or enterprise Wi-Fi network may not work there; use a suitable Wi-Fi or wired connection if available. Apple’s reinstallation guide has the current steps.

Repair the startup disk, then reinstall macOS if needed
Run Disk Utility First Aid
- In Recovery, open Disk Utility.
- Select the startup disk or volume and run First Aid. Follow the on-screen prompts to check and repair it.
- When the repair finishes, restart the Mac and see whether it starts normally.
If Disk Utility cannot find or repair the startup disk, or the Mac still will not start, consult Apple’s guidance for a Mac that starts to a question-mark folder or a Mac that starts to a blank screen, as appropriate.
Reinstall macOS from Recovery
If repair does not resolve the startup problem, return to Recovery and choose the macOS reinstall option. When asked where to install, select your current macOS volume. Keep the Mac connected to the internet during installation. Apple says that reinstalling from Recovery keeps files and user settings intact. That assurance applies to a Recovery reinstall—not to erasing the disk or restoring firmware.

A flashing question-mark folder means the startup disk is unavailable or does not contain a working macOS installation; it is a reason to check the disk and reinstall, not to assume a particular beta rollback is available.
If Recovery Assistant opens automatically
On macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Recovery Assistant may appear after certain startup failures. It attempts to identify and resolve the issue and needs internet access to download current information about software issues. Follow its on-screen instructions. If it cannot recover the Mac, Apple recommends other troubleshooting, including disk repair or reinstalling macOS. See Apple’s Recovery Assistant guidance.

Consider firmware recovery only when the symptoms fit
A Mac with Apple silicon or an Apple T2 Security Chip may rarely need a firmware revive or restore after symptoms such as an exclamation point in a circle, a persistent blank screen, firmware recovery mode, or an unresolved installation problem. This is a late-stage step, not a routine way to undo a beta.
Apple’s documented procedure requires the affected Mac, another Mac running macOS 14 or later, internet access, and a USB-C-to-USB-C cable that supports data and charging. The required DFU port and button sequence vary by Mac model; follow Apple’s model-specific firmware revive and restore instructions rather than trying a generic button sequence.

Apple explicitly recommends trying Revive Mac first. If it cannot be revived, Restore Mac is the more destructive option; do not select it expecting to preserve files.

- The startup disk does not appear in Disk Utility or First Aid cannot repair it.
- Recovery will not start, or the Mac remains on a blank screen after the documented steps.
- The Mac shows firmware-recovery symptoms and the required second Mac or model-specific procedure is unavailable.
In these cases, use Apple’s guidance for errors while updating or installing macOS, contact Apple Support, or seek service from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
What a beta update does—and does not—tell you
The recovery steps above address a Mac that cannot start; they do not establish that the beta caused a particular failure. There is no single rollback procedure established here for every macOS beta and Mac, and a downgrade that preserves data should not be assumed. Before attempting a restoration, check Apple’s current beta-specific instructions and whether your backup is compatible. Instructions for rolling back iOS or iPadOS betas are not Mac instructions.
