Respondus’s published guidance does not say whether LockDown Browser detects an HDMI splitter. It does say that multiple connected monitors can cause a blank exam screen and advises disconnecting additional monitors. Follow your instructor’s rules and ask your institution whether your display setup is permitted; do not rely on a splitter to bypass an exam restriction.
What Respondus says about multiple monitors
In its “Blank screen during exam” troubleshooting article, published May 15, 2024, Respondus says an exam may show a blank screen when multiple monitors are connected. Its instruction is: “This is not supported. Disconnect the additional monitors and open LockDown Browser up in the main monitor.” This is troubleshooting guidance; it does not explain how the software identifies display hardware.

Does LockDown Browser detect HDMI splitters?
The cited official material does not establish whether LockDown Browser detects or blocks an HDMI splitter. A splitter may distribute a display signal, but that fact alone does not answer what the browser or an exam’s settings will detect. A definite yes or no would go beyond what Respondus has published in the guidance cited here.

Do not confuse a webcam “splitter” with an HDMI splitter
Respondus’s webcam troubleshooting article, published May 11, 2026, tells students selecting a camera to choose the physical camera rather than a device labeled “splitter” or “filter.” That instruction concerns a webcam input—not an HDMI device distributing a display signal—and does not answer whether LockDown Browser detects an HDMI splitter.

What to do before an exam
- Check the exam rules. Ask your instructor or institution whether the specific display arrangement is allowed. Exam requirements can depend on instructor settings and institutional policy.
- If you encounter a blank screen, disconnect extra monitors. Follow Respondus’s troubleshooting advice and open LockDown Browser on the main monitor.
- Use the official technical checks if you have a problem. The Respondus Help Center provides a pre-exam webcam check and system and network checks. Contact your institution’s support team for help with exam-specific requirements.
A second camera is a separate feature
Respondus Monitor has an instructor-controlled second-camera option. The instructions published June 12, 2026 describe using a separate device; most iOS and Android devices are supported. A USB webcam connected to the exam computer cannot serve as that second camera. This camera feature is distinct from connecting a second display.
