Google News Full Coverage can help you find more reporting and perspectives on a story, but it does not unlock paid articles or guarantee that you can replace a subscription. The headline’s “buried Google feature” most plausibly refers to Full Coverage; Google also offers a separate Search setting called Preferred Sources, which makes selected sites appear more often in Top Stories.
What is Full Coverage in Google News?
Full Coverage is a story-level discovery view: it gathers more resources, perspectives, and context around a topic or news event. In Google News on a computer, Google says to open a story and select “See more headlines & perspectives.” You can also search Google News for a topic, place, or source. The exact control and its availability can vary by interface.

Google says, “Full Coverage has no personalization other than your language, region, and subscriptions.” That describes Full Coverage specifically, not the entire Google News app. The broader News experience can be personalized using interests, sources, and past activity, and some features require you to sign in. These controls serve related but different purposes. Full Coverage helps you explore one story from multiple sources in Google News. Preferred Sources is a Google Search feature that lets you select sites so they appear more often in Search’s Top Stories.
#1 Best Overall
| Control | Where it appears | What it changes | Does it grant article access? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Coverage | A story view in Google News | More coverage, perspectives, and context around a story; Google says its personalization is limited to language, region, and subscriptions. | No. A publisher may still require payment. |
| Preferred Sources | Google Search Top Stories | More visibility for sites you choose. | No. A publisher may still require payment. |
Google describes Top Stories as aiming to display relevant, high-quality results for a news topic; its explainer says selection can consider prominence, freshness, and source authoritativeness. These are descriptions of Google’s systems, not a guarantee about every result. Read Google Search’s explanation of how news works and Google’s Preferred Sources announcement for more detail.
How do I follow a news source on Google?
If your goal is to see more from particular publishers in Search, use Preferred Sources rather than Full Coverage. Google’s feature announcement explains the control and reported that readers were twice as likely to click through to a site after marking it as a Preferred Source. That is a Google-reported result, not an independently verified estimate, and it says nothing about avoiding subscriptions or gaining access to paid articles. Availability and interface details may vary; check Google’s current guidance for your account and region. Google has also announced language expansion for the feature in its language-expansion update.

Can Google News replace a news subscription?
It can help you discover coverage, but discovery is not the same as access. Google warns that someone receiving a shared paid story may still need to pay to read it. Full Coverage can lead to publisher pages that remain behind a paywall, and the outlets covering a subject—and the access they offer you—will determine how useful the feature is as a substitute.
Before cancelling a subscription, check which publishers and stories you actually read, whether those articles open for you, and whether your existing plan provides access you would otherwise lose. Google’s overview of how Google News works describes the service, but it does not establish how much any reader can save or how many subscriptions they can replace.

How to decide whether it meets your needs
- Open Google News on your current device and try Full Coverage on stories you follow, using “See more headlines & perspectives” where available.
- Open several of the resulting publisher links and note which articles you can read without payment.
- If you want more stories from selected sites in Search, look for Preferred Sources in Top Stories and choose the sources you trust.
- Compare that actual access with your reading habits and subscription terms before changing or cancelling a plan.
Google’s customization guidance for desktop is available at Google News Help. Controls may differ across app versions, accounts, and regions, so use what is currently shown in your own interface.
