Yes, but “sync” means different things on different services. Lightroom documents a keyword field that synchronizes among Lightroom Classic, Lightroom desktop, the web app and mobile apps. Apple Photos synchronizes its library metadata through iCloud Photos on devices using the same account. Google Photos makes backed-up photos and edits available on signed-in devices and offers a broad search index, but its documentation does not promise full round-trip synchronization of a traditional keyword field. OneDrive lets you add custom tags for searching in its own photo experience, without establishing that those tags are written into portable IPTC or XMP keywords.
If you need to tag once and preserve the tags in another catalog or in exported files, choose a system with an explicit metadata workflow and test an export before committing your entire library.

What “keyword sync” should mean
There are three separate behaviors that are often described as synchronization:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Metadata synchronization: the user-entered keyword is stored with the photo record and appears in the same library on another device.
- Cloud availability: the photo and edits are available after signing in, while the service may keep tags in a private database.
- Search indexing: a service finds a photo from captions, filenames, objects, faces or text it has recognized, even when no portable keyword was written to the file.
Those behaviors are not interchangeable. A search for “mountain” can succeed because an image-recognition system saw a mountain, because the filename contains the word, or because you entered “mountain” as a keyword. Only the last case is necessarily a user-created keyword, and it may still be locked inside one application.

How Lightroom keeps keywords in sync
Lightroom has the clearest documented cross-device keyword workflow in this comparison. Adobe describes Lightroom Classic as supporting keyword syncing with the Lightroom ecosystem, so a keyword can be available in Lightroom desktop, web and mobile as well as Classic.
Set up synchronization in Lightroom Classic
- Open the catalog in Lightroom Classic and sign in to the Adobe account used by the Lightroom apps.
- Place the photos you want on your other devices in a synced collection, or work from All Synced Photographs.
- Enable the Sync keywords option in the synchronization controls. The collection and keyword metadata must be part of the content Lightroom is syncing.
- Allow the initial upload to finish before judging the result on a phone or in the web app. Large libraries can take time to appear.
- Add or edit a keyword in the synchronized Lightroom workflow, then check the same photo in Classic, desktop, web and mobile.
Adobe says that metadata updates automatically synchronize the keywords after they are synced. This is different from merely uploading a JPEG: the Lightroom services are carrying the catalog’s keyword information.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Understand flat and hierarchical keywords
Lightroom Classic can organize terms hierarchically, such as Places > Europe > Italy > Rome. Adobe recommends using flat keywords when syncing between Classic and the Lightroom apps. Hierarchical keywords remain managed in Classic, while the apps show the synced terms as flat keywords. A mobile search for “Rome” can therefore work, but the parent-child structure you see in Classic should not be assumed to appear unchanged on the phone.
Check the direction of changes
Do not assume that every catalog operation is symmetrical simply because a photo appears on every screen. Test one photo by adding a keyword in Classic, then another by editing it in the mobile or desktop app. Confirm where each change appears and whether the hierarchy is altered when it returns to Classic. Keep a backup of the original catalog before making a large-scale restructuring.

How Apple Photos handles keywords through iCloud
Apple Photos supports custom keywords on both iPhone and Mac. On iPhone, you can add a keyword, search for it, rename it and delete it. On Mac, you can assign keywords and manage them with Keyword Manager. These are library-level labels rather than a promise that every external application will read the same field.
Use one Apple Photos library across devices
- Sign in to the same Apple account on the iPhone, Mac and any other Apple device that should share the library.
- Turn on iCloud Photos on each device.
- Add or edit the custom keyword in Photos on the device that is convenient.
- Wait for the library to synchronize, then search for the keyword in Photos on another enabled device.
Apple’s privacy documentation says that iCloud Photos stores the library in iCloud and keeps it up to date across iCloud-enabled devices, including the file’s metadata. That supports the expectation that a keyword entered in Apple Photos will follow the photo within the Apple Photos ecosystem.
Know the boundary of Apple’s guarantee
Apple’s documentation establishes synchronization of the Apple Photos library, not universal interoperability. If you export an image, open it in a different catalog application or move it to another cloud service, verify whether the custom keyword is present and readable there. The same label visible in Photos is not proof that an external program will receive an IPTC or XMP keyword.
What Google Photos syncs—and what it indexes
With backup enabled, Google says you can find photos you take and edits you make on any device where you sign in. This makes Google Photos reliable for cloud availability: the backed-up item and its Google Photos edits are not tied to the original phone.
Its search model is deliberately broad. Google documents searches based on people, places, objects, captions, filenames, camera models and text in images. A result can therefore come from your caption or filename, from IPTC information, or from Google’s own recognition and indexing.

Do not confuse search results with portable keywords
Google’s metadata documentation identifies IPTC fields including copyright, creator, captions and image descriptions. The cited documentation does not promise that a traditional desktop keyword hierarchy will be preserved as a user-editable keyword field, synchronized back into the original file and exported unchanged to another catalog. Treat Google Photos search labels and captions as a different model unless you verify the exact import and export path you intend to use.
A practical Google Photos test
- Prepare a copy of one photo with a distinctive, harmless test term in its metadata or caption.
- Back it up and wait until it is visible on the web and on a second signed-in device.
- Search for the term in Google Photos and record where the match comes from: caption, filename, visible metadata or an inferred subject.
- Download or export the photo and inspect it in the catalog application that will be your long-term library.
Repeat the test with a keyword added only inside Google Photos. If that term disappears after download or is not visible to the other catalog, it is an index label rather than portable metadata for your workflow.
What OneDrive photo tags do
Microsoft documents adding and removing custom photo tags on desktop and mobile. In supported OneDrive and Windows experiences, those tags can be used to search the photo collection. This is useful when the Microsoft gallery is your main viewing and search environment.
The cited Microsoft documentation does not say that a custom OneDrive tag is written into the photo’s portable IPTC or XMP keyword fields. Do not make OneDrive the master metadata system for a multi-application workflow until a downloaded test file proves that another catalog can read the tag.
Test OneDrive portability before tagging a large archive
- Choose a copy of a representative photo and add a unique custom tag in OneDrive.
- Download the file from OneDrive rather than relying only on the online view.
- Open the downloaded file in the desktop catalog, metadata inspector or other application that must receive the keyword.
- Check the reverse direction as well: add a known IPTC keyword outside OneDrive, upload a copy, and see whether OneDrive displays it as a custom tag.
Passing one direction does not prove the other. Keep the two results separate in your notes.

How to choose a master tagging system
Pick the library that will own your vocabulary and treat other services as synchronized views or search indexes. Use these decision points:
- Need an explicitly documented shared keyword field: Lightroom is the strongest match among the services covered here.
- All devices are Apple and the library will stay in Photos: Apple Photos with iCloud Photos is a practical fit.
- Primary goal is finding images by many signals: Google Photos offers broad cloud search, but do not assume its index is a portable keyword hierarchy.
- Primary goal is tags inside Microsoft storage: OneDrive tags can work, provided portability is not a requirement or has been verified.
Before migrating a full library, write down the exact phone models, desktop operating systems, web accounts and cloud plans involved. Availability and behavior can vary by account, region, plan and service rollout.
A repeatable cross-device keyword test
Run this test whenever you change the master service, catalog or export format:
- Select five ordinary photos and one file with an existing IPTC description or copyright field.
- Give each photo a unique test keyword, including one two-word phrase and one term that could not be inferred from the image.
- Record the original keyword spelling, capitalization and any hierarchy in the master catalog.
- Sync the set to the phone, desktop, web interface and cloud account you intend to use.
- Search on every device and verify that the exact user-entered terms, not merely visually similar results, are returned.
- Edit one keyword on each side of the workflow to test whether changes travel in both directions.
- Export or download the files and inspect them in the next application in your process.
- Check whether hierarchy, spelling, captions and unrelated IPTC fields survived.
Keep the test set until you have completed a restore or migration. A service that passes search on the web but fails the downloaded-file check is suitable for discovery, not necessarily for archival metadata.
Common failure modes and fixes
The keyword appears on the computer but not the phone
Confirm that the photo is in the service’s synchronized set, that the phone uses the same account and that synchronization has completed. In Lightroom, check synced collections or All Synced Photographs and the Sync keywords setting. In Apple Photos, check iCloud Photos on both devices.
Best Value
A hierarchy became a flat list
This is expected when Lightroom Classic hierarchy is synchronized to the Lightroom apps. Keep hierarchy management in Classic and use the flat terms in the apps, or redesign the vocabulary around flat keywords before syncing.
Search finds the image, but another catalog cannot see the tag
The service may be returning an AI or filename match rather than a portable keyword. Download a copy and inspect its metadata. If the term is absent, maintain keywords in a catalog that writes them to a format your other applications support.
Edits do not travel back to the original library
Cloud availability is not proof of bidirectional synchronization. Test an edit from each endpoint, verify the account and synchronized collection, and preserve an original backup before changing thousands of records.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Different devices show different results
Check account identity, backup or sync status, unsupported file types, and whether the device is viewing a local subset rather than the cloud library. Also account for service features that vary by region, plan or rollout.
Privacy and operational considerations
Cross-device search generally requires an account and cloud processing or storage. Decide whether sensitive labels—client names, locations, medical information or unpublished subjects—should be placed in a cloud index. Keep an independent backup and, when portability matters, retain files with embedded metadata rather than relying on an online tag alone.
The safest pattern is to maintain one authoritative vocabulary, synchronize only through a documented path, and verify exported files at regular intervals. That approach prevents a convenient search feature from becoming the only copy of your photo organization.
