Can New Thermoset Plastics Be Recycled More Easily?

Dynamic bonds can make some thermosets reshaping or recycling candidates, but current methods are specific processes, not a simple universal recycling solution.

Some thermoset plastics can be redesigned or chemically converted so their cross-linked networks can be reshaped or recycled under controlled conditions. The approach is promising, but “simple to recycle” overstates what has been demonstrated: current examples use specific chemistries and may require milling, catalysts, heat, molding or solvents. They are not evidence that thermosets belong in ordinary plastic recycling bins.

Why conventional thermosets are difficult to recycle

Thermosets get strength and heat or chemical resistance from covalent bonds that link their polymer chains into a network. Unlike many melt-processable plastics, that network does not simply soften and flow again when heated. Conventional thermosets therefore cannot generally be recycled by ordinary remelting.

What makes a vitrimer different?

Vitrimers are one type of covalent adaptable network. Their bonds can exchange under selected heat or chemical conditions, allowing the network’s connections to rearrange while the material remains cross-linked. Depending on the formulation and process, this can make reshaping, repair or recycling possible without treating every thermoset as an ordinary meltable plastic. A 2024 review describes vitrimerization as a potential bridge between chemical and mechanical recycling: Journal of Environmental Chemical Engineering.

What recycling approaches have been demonstrated?

These examples use different feedstocks and routes. Their results should be understood as outcomes for particular materials and studies, not as a universal recycling recipe.

Approach What the study reports What the result establishes
Convert existing thermosets through mechanochemical vitrimerization A 2024 study examined poly allyl diglycol carbonate (PADC) and poly thiourethane (PTU). Its process used cryogenic ball milling with a zinc-based catalyst and a hydroxyl-providing agent, followed by compression molding. The authors reported stress relaxation consistent with dynamic networks and thermal properties close to the original samples. Polymer, 2024. A laboratory process for these two thermosets; it does not establish consumer-ready recycling or compatibility with existing collection systems.
Recycle vitrimer-based printed circuit boards One 2024 study reported 98% polymer recovery, 100% fibre recovery, and 91% solvent recovery. Nature Sustainability, 2024. Recovery figures for the study’s specific board material and process, not general rates for thermosets.
Closed-loop reuse of a bio-based disulfide vitrimer A 2025 Green Chemistry communication describes a solvent-free process that produced oligomers for direct reuse without purification. Green Chemistry, 2025. A route demonstrated for this vitrimer system; it does not show that other formulations can use the same method.
Design a vitrimer from the outset A 2024 study reports research on a bio-based polystyrene vitrimer and discusses thermoset cross-linking. ACS Applied Polymer Materials, published online October 25, 2024. A material-design approach; the cited source does not establish a general recycling process for existing thermoset waste.

Does “recyclable” mean easy to recycle?

No. Reprocessability is a material property under specified conditions; practical recycling also depends on collection, sorting, contamination, equipment, energy and a viable route for using the recovered material. The demonstrated methods can involve specialized steps such as cryogenic milling, added catalysts or reagents, heating, molding, or solvent handling. The recovery percentages from the circuit-board study are encouraging, but they cannot be applied to other plastics or recycling systems.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory describes vitrimers as a promising area for recyclability, repairability and high-performance composites, while discussing development and commercialization opportunities. That overview does not establish broad market availability or a routine system for recycling mixed thermoset waste: PNNL, July 5, 2023.

What this means for consumers and manufacturers

  • Consumers: Do not put a thermoset product in a curbside plastics bin on the assumption that it is recyclable because it contains dynamic bonds. Follow local instructions for the specific product and material.
  • Product designers: Vitrimer chemistry may make repair or reprocessing possible, but a useful design must account for the actual recovery route and preserve the properties the product needs.
  • Recyclers and manufacturers: Each formulation needs a process matched to its chemistry, along with evidence about recovered material quality, scale and compatibility with equipment and waste streams.

What remains uncertain

The cited studies do not establish that all thermosets can be converted, that mixed thermoset waste can be handled in one process, or that these methods are routinely available at industrial scale. Nor do they demonstrate universal compatibility with existing recycling infrastructure. The central advance is that some cross-linked plastics can be engineered or converted to rearrange under controlled conditions—not that thermoset recycling has become effortless.
