Yes, some modern retro computers can run original software and connect selected original peripherals—but compatibility is specific to each device, system implementation, software format, and connection path. The Commodore 64 Ultimate documents support for common C64 file formats and legacy ports; MiSTer FPGA can connect original controllers or peripherals through SNAC on supported cores and suitable hardware. Neither example guarantees that every old program or accessory will work.
What determines whether old software and peripherals will work?
Check compatibility in two separate parts: what the machine can run, and what it can physically connect. A device may accept software files without reading original disks or tapes, or support an original controller only through a specific adapter.

- Software or media: Confirm whether the system supports physical cartridges, disks or tapes, file images, or some combination. A listed file extension is evidence of format support, not a promise that every program using that format works.
- Connection path: Distinguish a built-in legacy port from USB input, a serial adapter, or a product-specific adapter. Each route supports a different set of devices.
- Implementation scope: Check whether support is part of the computer itself or depends on a particular FPGA core, add-on board, or adapter.
- Evidence: Give more weight to a documented format or port than to the general label “FPGA.” An FPGA is a way to implement hardware behavior; it does not by itself prove exact compatibility.
Commodore 64 Ultimate: C64 software formats and legacy ports
The Commodore 64 Ultimate is an officially licensed modern C64. Its manufacturer says an AMD Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA recreates the 6510 CPU, VIC-II graphics chip, and SID audio chip. The product page lists cartridge, IEC, Datasette, and two joystick ports, and says users can connect an original 1541 floppy drive or Datasette.
The official specifications list standard Commodore 64 or GEOS support, along with the file formats .D64, .D71, .D81, .G64, .T64, .TAP, .PRG, and .ROM, among others. They also list microSD and USB connections, analog video, and 1080p HDMI output. File-image support and physical-media connections are distinct options; the published list does not establish that every historical title, drive revision, or peripheral will work.

- Unique Turbo button for instant full-speed cooling mode
- Three front 5.25" expansion bays, compatible with hot-swap adapter cage
- Supports 360mm liquid cooling radiators
- Supports graphics card up to 386mm in length
- Top I/O ports include: 1 × USB Type-C, 2 × USB 3.0, 1 × combo audio jack
The manufacturer claims “above 99%” compatibility with original cartridges, disks, tapes, and peripherals. The cited product page does not give a publication year or independent test method, so treat that figure as Commodore 64 Ultimate’s claim rather than an independently verified result. The page says first units began shipping in December 2025.
MiSTer FPGA: original peripherals depend on the core and hardware
MiSTer’s documentation says USB HID-compatible devices generally work, including keyboards and modern controllers. Original controllers and peripherals use a different route: SNAC adapters, a compatible Analog or Digital IO add-on board, and a core that exposes the relevant serial connections. A SNAC adapter alone does not make every peripheral work with every core.

- Full size replica of the Amiga 1200
- Full size working keyboard.
- High Definition multi region output at 50 or 60Hz.
- 25 fantastic built in games presented on an easy-to-use carousel, including: Settlers II, Defender of the Crown I & II, the Turrican trilogy, Beneath a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, and Ruff ‘n’ Tumble.
- Four USB ports to support gamepads, mouse, joysticks, and USB sticks.
MiSTer’s FAQ also cautions against equating an FPGA core with an exact circuit-level copy. It says some cores are functional recreations rather than proven replications, and notes that the widely used Z80 (T80) and MC68000 (TG68K) cores are functional emulations, not replications. In practice, identify the specific core and peripheral path you need, then check that core’s documentation.
Analogue Pocket illustrates the limits of media compatibility
Analogue Pocket is a handheld game system, not a general-purpose retro computer, but it is a useful example of why “runs original software” needs qualification. Analogue lists Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges for the built-in slot. Separately sold adapters support Game Gear, Neo Geo Pocket and Neo Geo Pocket Color, Atari Lynx, and TurboGrafx-16, PC Engine, and SuperGrafx cartridges.

Analogue says Pocket does not play copyrighted ROM files; its stated approach is to play legacy cartridges. Its Dock provides HDMI output to an HDTV, while listed music accessories such as Pocket-to-MIDI cables serve specific workflows. Those accessories do not establish broad compatibility with computer peripherals.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to check a specific setup before relying on it
- Name the exact machine or core. “FPGA retro computer” is too broad to establish compatibility. Find the product’s specifications or the MiSTer core documentation.
- Match the software to the supported format. Check whether your copy is a cartridge, disk, tape, or file image, and whether that exact medium or format is listed.
- Trace the peripheral connection. Look for a native port or identify the required USB device, SNAC adapter, IO board, or system-specific cartridge adapter.
- Check for support conditions. For MiSTer, confirm both core support and the necessary add-on hardware. For an adapter-based system, confirm that the adapter covers your cartridge or device type.
- Read compatibility claims narrowly. A vendor’s percentage or list applies only to the product and categories it names; it is not a cross-platform guarantee.
The official sources document particular formats and connection routes, not an exhaustive independent matrix covering every program, peripheral model, revision, or region. Compatibility can therefore be promising and still require checking the exact software and accessory combination.
