How to Choose a Modern Retro Computer for Programming and Classic Games

Choose between the MEGA65 and ZX Spectrum Next by the classic software you want, the tools you plan to program with, and the hardware your setup needs.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a modern retro computer by the platform you want to learn and the game library you want to revisit. A MEGA65 follows the Commodore C65 line and is highly compatible with C64 software; the ZX Spectrum Next expands the ZX Spectrum while supporting original software and programs written for its added hardware. They are different ecosystems, so decide whether Commodore or Spectrum matters more before comparing features.

Which modern retro computer should I buy?

Start with the games and software you care about, not a headline specification. If your interest is Commodore, the MEGA65 is a 21st-century realization of the C65 with stated C64 compatibility. If you want the ZX Spectrum line, the Spectrum Next is an updated Spectrum designed to run original software as well as newer Next software. The projects describe their own compatibility goals; that does not establish that every title, peripheral, or expansion behaves exactly like it did on original hardware.

Decision MEGA65 ZX Spectrum Next
Lineage C65-oriented computer with C64 compatibility, according to the MEGA65 project. Updated ZX Spectrum compatible with original hardware and software, according to SpecNext Ltd.
Programming starting point BASIC 65, MEGA-OS, and programming languages and tools are listed by the project; the overview does not compare learning difficulty or provide a neutral tool-by-tool assessment. NextZXOS and CP/M Plus support are listed; its enhanced Z80 and added hardware support development beyond original Spectrum capabilities. The product page does not compare learning difficulty with the MEGA65.
Modern connections and storage The project lists HD output, dual SD-card support, Ethernet, and extended memory. Check the exact revision and supported accessories. The cited product page lists HDMI-compatible digital video, VGA/RGB, SD-card storage, audio hardware, two joystick ports, tape loading and saving, and an expansion port. Confirm the hardware revision being offered.
Game-library direction Commodore-oriented games and software; the project says it can play “several thousands” of retro games out of the box, a broad vendor claim without a stated count methodology or independent compatibility audit. Spectrum games and software, plus newer programs that use added Next hardware. Check the individual title and its requirements.
Purchase details Current price, stock, shipping, warranty, and included accessories were not established by the cited product information. Current price, stock, shipping, warranty, and included accessories were not established by the cited product information.

Can I program on a modern retro computer and play old games on it?

Yes, both are presented as computers for programming as well as retro-platform use, but the programming experience depends on what you want to build. Treat “programming” as a workflow question: identify the language, assembler or compiler, development tools, documentation, and testing method for your project on the platform you are considering. The official summaries identify some system features, but do not provide a neutral comparison of tool availability or how easy either machine is to learn.

Programming on the MEGA65

The MEGA65 project lists BASIC 65, MEGA-OS, and programming languages and tools. That makes BASIC 65 a named entry point to investigate if you want to code on the machine itself. If your aim is a specific game or utility, check the documentation and toolchain for that target rather than assuming that a built-in language covers every workflow.

Programming on the Spectrum Next

SpecNext Ltd lists NextZXOS and CP/M Plus support, along with an enhanced FPGA-based Z80. Its page specifies standard operation at 3.5 MHz and turbo modes up to 28 MHz, and says the system supports newer programs designed for expanded capabilities. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a neutral performance comparison or a guarantee that a particular program will use the added hardware.

What should I check about games and compatibility?

Make a shortlist of the games and software you actually expect to use, then verify those titles for the specific machine and hardware revision. “Compatible with” describes a platform goal, not proof of identical behavior for every game, peripheral, or expansion. Distinguish original-machine software from programs written to take advantage of the newer system’s features; this matters especially on the Spectrum Next, which explicitly supports newer Next software.

Both systems add conveniences associated with modern setups while retaining a retro-platform focus, but their listed connections are not identical. Compare the features against your actual desk setup: display inputs, storage, audio, networking, joystick needs, and whether you intend to connect original peripherals.

Spectrum Next connections

The SpecNext product page lists HDMI-compatible digital video as well as VGA/RGB, SD storage, audio hardware, two joystick ports, tape loading and saving, and an expansion port. Its page gives specifications for a later Kickstarter 2 configuration, including 2,048 KB RAM; verify that the offered unit matches that configuration rather than assuming every revision has the same specification.

How to make the buying decision

  1. Choose the lineage. Pick Commodore if C64/C65 software is the draw; pick Spectrum if the ZX Spectrum library and development scene are the priority.
  2. Name the project. Decide whether you want to learn BASIC, write assembly, use other languages or tools, or run existing software. Find the relevant platform documentation and workflow for that goal.
  3. Verify the games and peripherals. Check the particular titles, controllers, expansions, and storage devices you intend to use against the exact hardware revision.
  4. Match the hardware to your setup. Check display connections, storage, audio, networking, and whether legacy peripherals are important to you.
  5. Confirm ownership details before ordering. Compare current price, availability, regional shipping, warranty or support terms, and what is included. These details can change and are not established by the cited feature summaries.

Are there other modern retro computers to consider?

The Commander X16 is another project associated with close-to-hardware 8-bit programming, but the available project FAQ includes dated timeline language and does not establish a current purchase recommendation. The eZX Spectrum project describes FPGA configurations for classic Spectrum models, a Spectrum Next-compatible image, and a clean-slate design; its pictured enclosure is labeled as concept renders, so that material does not establish a finished product available to buy. Treat both as projects to investigate rather than assuming present availability.
