Sometimes, but not because of the plastic. A conventional walk-through metal detector may produce little or no response to a firearm body printed from polymer. However, many 3D-printed firearms include metal barrels, firing parts, fasteners, or inserts, and those parts can trigger a detector. Airport checkpoints also use x-ray and advanced imaging systems that can reveal concealed non-metallic objects, so a mostly plastic gun is not automatically invisible.
Detection depends on the firearm’s construction, whether it is assembled, how it is concealed, the equipment’s calibration and sensitivity, and the screening procedure. U.S. law also uses a specific legal benchmark and a separate x-ray-image requirement; passing one detector is not a certification that a firearm is lawful.

What a conventional metal detector can and cannot sense
Plastic itself usually creates little magnetometer response
Walk-through metal detectors are designed to respond to electromagnetic effects produced by conductive or magnetic material. Common 3D-printing polymers are not metal, so a shell or frame made only from plastic may create little or no response in a conventional magnetometer. That limited response is a statement about the detector’s sensing method, not proof that the entire object will go unnoticed.

A firearm is an assembly, not just a printed body. A 3D-printed design may use metal for a barrel, firing pin, springs, screws, pins, reinforcement, or a deliberately inserted piece. The amount, alloy, shape, and location of that metal affect the signal a detector receives. A small component close to the detector’s sensing field can matter even when most of the object is polymer.

For that reason, the useful question is not “Is the gun plastic?” but “What materials and parts are present, and what screening technology is being used?” Two firearms made from similar printed material can produce different results if their internal hardware differs.
Why the phrase “plastic 3D-printed gun” is misleading
Descriptions of a gun as plastic often refer to the printed receiver, frame, or housing. They do not necessarily describe every functional part. Some designs include a metal insert or other hardware specifically relevant to operation or legal detectability. Removing or changing a component can also change the object’s behavior, but attempting to alter a firearm to defeat screening can create serious safety and criminal-law risks.
| Part or condition | Likely relevance to a conventional metal detector | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Polymer frame or housing | Usually little direct magnetometer response | It does not show that the assembled firearm is undetectable |
| Metal barrel, firing parts, springs, pins, or fasteners | Can create a detectable electromagnetic response | The exact response cannot be predicted without the detector and configuration |
| Inserted metal piece | May add a deliberate, concentrated metal signal | Presence or absence of one insert does not define every design |
| Separated components | Each item presents a different size, shape, and material profile | Separation does not make transport lawful or guarantee that screening will miss the parts |
How airport screening differs from a walk-through metal detector
Airport security is not a single magnetometer test. Different layers look for different physical properties, and officers can refer an item for additional inspection when an alarm or image requires clarification.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Screening method | Primary signal or image | Why a mostly plastic firearm can still be found |
|---|---|---|
| Walk-through metal detector | Electromagnetic response from conductive or magnetic material | Metal components or inserts can create an alarm even when the body is polymer |
| Airport x-ray | Radiographic differences in density and structure | A major component must produce an accurate image under the federal legal standard; an image can show shape and internal structure |
| Advanced imaging technology | Detection of anomalies and concealed objects on a passenger | TSA says this technology can detect non-metallic concealed items |
| Officer examination or secondary screening | Human review of an alarm, image, or irregularity | Additional inspection can resolve an object that a single automated sensor does not classify clearly |
Because these systems measure different things, a result from one device cannot be generalized to all checkpoints. A polymer object that produces little magnetometer response may still have a recognizable x-ray profile or appear as an anomaly in an advanced imaging scan.

The U.S. federal legal test is stricter than “will a detector beep?”
The two-part rule in 18 U.S.C. §922(p)
Federal law makes it unlawful to manufacture, import, sell, ship, deliver, possess, transfer, or receive a firearm that fails either of two requirements. The rule applies after removing grips, stocks, and magazines:
- Metal-detector comparison: the firearm must not be less detectable than the statutory Security Exemplar when tested with a calibrated walk-through metal detector.
- X-ray-image requirement: the firearm’s major component must generate an accurate image on commonly used airport x-ray machines.
The statute defines the Security Exemplar, during the statutory reference period, as 3.7 ounces of 17-4 PH stainless steel in a handgun-like shape. That number is a legal calibration benchmark. It is not a promise that every detector will respond identically to every firearm, nor is it a consumer test for proving compliance.
How ATF describes 3D-printed firearms
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives repeats the same two-part standard in its official questions and answers and specifically addresses firearms made with 3D-printing technology. A design can therefore raise legal issues even when its printed portion is non-metallic. The benchmark comparison and the separate x-ray-image rule must both be satisfied.
A detector that does not alarm during one walk-through does not override the statute. Calibration, test configuration, the firearm’s major component, and the equipment used for the x-ray determination all matter.

What enforcement and checkpoint reports show
The Liberator example
A U.S. Department of Justice Office of Inspector General report described the Liberator design and reported that it could be rendered undetectable by removing its metal insert. The same report says ATF received information from the Transportation Security Administration in 2016 about a person stopped with a 3D-printed firearm; ATF determined that the firearm violated the Undetectable Firearms Act.
This example demonstrates why a printed-plastic label is insufficient. The design, its insert, and the statutory test were all relevant. It does not establish a universal detection rate for every later design.
TSA’s statement on checkpoint detection
TSA spokesperson Michelle Negron said: “TSA has determined that these items can and have been detected at the security checkpoint.” The same statement says TSA officers use advanced imaging technology that can detect non-metallic items concealed on a passenger. That is a direct warning against treating polymer construction as automatic invisibility.

| Variable | How it can affect detection |
|---|---|
| Metal content | More metal, a larger piece, or a favorable orientation can increase a magnetometer response; less metal can reduce it. |
| Alloy and geometry | Conductivity, magnetic properties, thickness, and shape influence the signal produced by a component. |

| Screening technology | Magnetometers, x-ray systems, advanced imaging, and human inspection detect different characteristics. |
| Officer procedures | An alarm, image anomaly, or uncertainty can lead to secondary screening and a different result from the first automated pass. |
What this means for the airport-security question
“Would a plastic 3D-printed gun get through airport security?” has no responsible yes-or-no answer. It might produce little response on a conventional metal detector if its metal content is limited, but airport screening is layered. X-ray imaging can reveal structure and density, advanced imaging can identify non-metallic concealed items, and officers can conduct additional screening. A firearm’s physical construction and the checkpoint’s equipment determine what happens.
Trying to test or exploit screening equipment is dangerous and can lead to arrest, confiscation, flight disruption, and additional legal consequences. Do not carry a firearm or firearm component through a checkpoint in the hope that a plastic body will avoid detection. Questions about lawful possession, transport, or a specific device should be directed to a qualified attorney and the relevant authorities; the detector response alone is not a legal determination.

- “Plastic means invisible.” False. Plastic may be difficult for a magnetometer to sense, but metal parts, x-ray imaging, advanced imaging, and officer inspection can reveal the object.
- “If it does not beep, it is legal.” False. Federal law applies a Security Exemplar comparison and a separate major-component x-ray-image requirement.
- “Every 3D-printed gun contains the same amount of metal.” False. Designs differ in barrels, firing components, fasteners, inserts, and other hardware.
- “Airport security only uses metal detectors.” False. TSA describes advanced imaging for non-metallic concealed items, alongside other screening methods.
- “One incident proves all designs behave the same way.” False. The reported Liberator and 2016 checkpoint case illustrate a particular design and investigation, not a universal probability.
What can be stated with confidence
A conventional metal detector primarily responds to metal, so a purely polymer object may produce little signal. A functioning 3D-printed firearm, however, can include enough metal to trigger that detector, and airport x-ray or advanced-imaging systems are not limited to metal detection. U.S. law measures detectability against a 3.7-ounce 17-4 PH stainless-steel Security Exemplar and separately requires an accurate airport x-ray image of the major component. Because designs and equipment vary, claims that all plastic 3D-printed guns are invisible—or that all will trigger an alarm—are unsupported.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 3D-printed firearm have to contain metal to be subject to the federal detectability rule?
The federal rule has two parts: comparison with the calibrated Security Exemplar and an accurate x-ray image of the major component. A firearm’s legal status is not decided solely by whether a magnetometer detects metal.

What did the 2016 TSA-related case establish?
The DOJ Office of Inspector General reported that ATF investigated a 3D-printed firearm after information from TSA and found it violated the Undetectable Firearms Act. The case concerns that firearm and does not provide a universal detection rate.
Can an airport x-ray reveal a non-metallic object?
Yes. X-ray systems display differences in density and structure, and TSA also says its advanced imaging technology can detect non-metallic concealed items.
Is there a published percentage for detecting every plastic 3D-printed gun design?
No authoritative universal percentage is established. Results depend on construction, assembly, concealment, calibration, screening technology, and officer procedures.
