When you submit a college transcript, the graduate school can see the grade or mark your college actually printed. If the course appears as P, Pass, S, CR, or another pass/fail notation, that symbol is normally visible alongside the course title and credits.
What admissions readers generally cannot assume is the hidden letter grade behind that symbol. Colleges differ on whether they retain or disclose an underlying grade, and there is no universal rule requiring them to provide it. The practical effect of a P/F course therefore depends on the target program’s prerequisites, minimum-grade rules, grading legend, and how central the course is to your preparation.

What a graduate school receives on your transcript
A transcript is the academic record issued by your college. It normally lists each course, the term in which you took it, credits, and the final grade or mark. Graduate admissions offices that require transcripts expect to evaluate that record as issued, not a private conversion you make afterward.

Stanford Graduate Admissions requires records for every post-secondary institution and says the academic record should show course titles, the grades received, and the institution’s grading-scale legend. Duke likewise requires every course and the grade or mark received, with the grading scale when available. Vanderbilt asks for year-by-year courses and grades and also requests the institution’s scale. Under those requirements, a P/F notation is part of what the reader sees.

The legend matters because the same letters can mean different things at different colleges. A P might mean Pass, while S could mean Satisfactory, and CR might mean Credit. Some institutions distinguish Pass from High Pass; others use NP for No Pass or separate failing symbols. Without the key, an admissions reader cannot reliably interpret the notation.
Transcript information admissions offices commonly request
| Institutional instruction | What it tells an applicant |
|---|---|
| Stanford Graduate Admissions | Submit records for every post-secondary institution, with course titles, grades, and the grading-scale legend. |
| Duke Graduate School | Each transcript should list every course and the grade or mark received; include the grading scale when available. |
| Vanderbilt Graduate School | Provide year-by-year courses and grades and the institution’s grading scale. |
| Harvard Griffin GSAS | Report grades and GPA in the same format used on the transcript. If the transcript has no GPA, do not invent or calculate one for the application. |
These instructions do not mean every program treats every P/F mark negatively. They establish what the committee is allowed to review: the notation printed by your college and the context supplied by the grading scale.
Can admissions readers see the letter grade behind a P?
Not necessarily. A transcript that displays “P” usually does not also display the letter grade you would have received under a traditional A–F system. Whether an underlying grade exists, and whether anyone outside the college can obtain it, is controlled by the issuing institution’s policy.

How to verify what your college discloses
- Read the transcript itself, including footnotes and the grading legend.
- Check your registrar’s pass/fail policy for language about an underlying grade, transcript notation, or release of records.
- If the policy is unclear, ask the registrar whether an official transcript contains anything beyond the P/F mark and whether a separate explanation can be issued.
- Ask the target graduate program whether it accepts a registrar’s letter or other supplemental grading documentation. Do not send extra material unless the program permits it.
An admissions committee may be able to infer that you met the college’s passing standard, but it should not be assumed to know your unreported numerical or letter grade.
Does Pass/Fail affect your GPA?
Pass/fail grading often removes a course from the GPA calculation, but the exact treatment is institution-specific. A failing mark may be treated differently from a passing mark, and some colleges apply special rules to particular programs or approved circumstances.
| Policy or institution | What is established | Practical reading |
|---|---|---|
| Penn State graduate grading policy | A P grade does not influence GPA; an F does. P/F is authorized only in specified circumstances. | A passing P can leave the GPA unchanged, while an F can lower it under the policy. |
| McGill graduate regulations | Approved P/F courses follow a formal approval process. Pass grades are excluded from GPA calculations, and P/F courses are generally not used for required courses. | Approval and course role matter; a P/F option may not be available for a required course. |
| University of Rochester | The official transcript shows the final grade assigned under its graduate pass/fail scheme. | The transcript notation, rather than an assumed letter conversion, is the official result. |
| University of Toronto | P (Pass) and F (Fail) are listed among standard designators for undergraduate and graduate course results. | The institution recognizes these as formal course-result symbols. |
If an application asks for GPA, copy the format your transcript uses. Harvard Griffin GSAS specifically instructs applicants to report grades and GPA in that same format and says an applicant does not need to create a GPA when the transcript provides none. A self-calculated GPA that treats P as an A, or assigns another value, can misstate your academic record.

A passing mark demonstrates that you completed the course at your college’s passing level. It gives less detail than a letter grade, however: the reader cannot distinguish an outcome near the minimum passing threshold from one near the top of the class unless your institution supplies more information.

That loss of detail matters most in three situations:
- A prerequisite: The program may require a minimum letter grade, such as a B, rather than merely completion. A P may therefore fail to document that you met the stated prerequisite.
- A major-field or methods course: Committees often use advanced courses to judge preparation for graduate-level work. A P gives less evidence about the level of mastery than a letter grade.
- Several P/F selections: One pass in an otherwise graded transcript is easier to contextualize than a long sequence of P/F marks, especially in the major.
None of these points creates a universal penalty. The available policies establish that the mark is visible and that grading context should accompany it; they do not show that every graduate school rejects or automatically downgrades applicants with P/F grades. Requirements differ by institution, department, degree, and year, so the current instructions for your exact program control.
Why the legend and policy context can change the reading
A transcript legend may show that P means work equivalent to a defined range, or it may simply indicate successful completion without a letter-grade comparison. A dean’s or registrar’s explanation may also identify a temporary, institution-wide policy, such as a pandemic-era switch to P/F. Supplying that context where the application allows it helps the reader understand why the notation appears and whether it applied broadly to your class.
Should you elect Pass/Fail for a course?
Do not decide solely on the hope that a graduate school will not notice. Assume the P/F mark will be visible and evaluate the decision against the program’s rules and your academic record.

| Decision factor | Questions to answer | How it affects the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Prerequisite status | Does the target program require a letter grade or a minimum grade in this course? | If yes, confirm in writing whether P satisfies the requirement before electing it. |
| Major relevance | Is the course central to the field, methods sequence, or proposed research area? | A letter grade may provide more useful evidence of preparation when the program permits either option. |
| Number of P/F courses | How many P/F marks will appear, and are they concentrated in the major? | A cluster of marks can give less detail about performance than a single isolated P. |
| GPA treatment | Will a P be excluded from GPA, and how is an F treated? | Use your college’s written policy; do not assume every P/F system works the same way. |
| Application reporting | Does the application ask for a GPA or grades in a particular format? | Report exactly what the transcript reports and leave a GPA blank when the instructions say not to calculate one. |
| Available context | Will the transcript include a legend or can the registrar provide an explanation? | Clear context makes the notation easier for an out-of-school reader to interpret. |
For a hypothetical elective unrelated to your intended field, a P may be less consequential than a P in a required statistics or laboratory course. That is a decision framework, not a promise of an admissions outcome: only the target department can tell you whether its prerequisite and minimum-grade rules are met.

- Obtain the correct record. Order the official or unofficial transcript format specified by each target program, and include every post-secondary institution the application asks you to report.
- Inspect the notation. Confirm that each P, S, CR, NP, or similar mark is accompanied by the college’s complete grading legend. If it is missing, ask whether the registrar can issue an explanation or whether the program accepts an attached key.
- Read the program’s prerequisite language. Look for “letter grade,” “minimum grade,” or equivalent wording. A general statement that a course is required is not the same as confirmation that P satisfies the requirement.
- Ask a focused question when necessary. Contact the department, not just a general admissions inbox, when a P/F mark appears in a prerequisite or core course. State the course, term, notation, and the published requirement; ask whether additional documentation is recommended.
- Explain unusual policies briefly. If your entire institution adopted temporary or program-wide P/F grading, use the application’s additional-information field only if there is a clear place for that context. Describe the policy factually rather than claiming an unreported letter grade.
- Report grades and GPA faithfully. Copy the transcript’s format. Never convert P to A, assign GPA points that your college does not use, or substitute a self-calculated GPA for the one shown on the record.
Common situations and the safest response
The transcript has P but no legend
Request the official grading key from the registrar or follow the program’s instructions for attaching one. Because P, S, and CR can have different meanings, sending the mark without its key leaves the reader to guess.
The course is listed as P in a required sequence
Check the department’s minimum-grade rule before relying on the course. If the rule is ambiguous, obtain written clarification and keep it with your application records. A supplemental explanation may document the grading system, but it does not automatically replace a required letter grade.

Your transcript has no GPA
Use the application’s instructions for a transcript without a GPA. Harvard Griffin GSAS states that applicants should not invent or calculate one when the transcript does not provide it. Entering a made-up value can create an inconsistency between the form and the academic record.
Best Value
You received an F under a P/F option
Do not assume that F is treated like P. Penn State’s policy, for example, states that P does not influence GPA while F does. Check your own institution’s rule and disclose the result exactly as printed.
You want to reveal an underlying grade
First verify that your college officially releases one. If it does not, do not estimate it from a percentage, class average, or memory. Ask the target program whether it wants any registrar-issued documentation; otherwise, submit the transcript as issued.
Bottom line for applicants
Graduate schools normally see a pass/fail mark because it is printed on the transcript they receive. They also need the college’s grading legend to interpret it. A P commonly carries no GPA points, but the treatment of P and F depends on the issuing institution. The hidden letter grade is not universally disclosed, and a P/F course is not an automatic admissions penalty. Before choosing or reporting one, check the exact program’s prerequisite and minimum-grade rules, provide authorized context, and reproduce your transcript’s grades and GPA format without conversion.
