Yes. Gemini can place a call through the Phone app on an Android phone or tablet. That is different from Gemini’s separate feature for handling certain business calls, which is limited to eligible US users and is still rolling out. Here’s what each feature does, what you need, and how to control access.
What Gemini can do when you ask it to call
Gemini’s Phone connected app can use your Android device’s calling app to dial a saved contact, business, or phone number. Try prompts such as “Call Maya Chen,” “Call 555-0100,” or “Call the Green Street Clinic.” You can also establish context first—for example, discuss nearby restaurants and then ask Gemini to call one. Relationship prompts such as “call my sister” depend on having that relationship saved in Gemini instructions.

When Gemini selects Phone, it uses your device’s default phone app. If it does not select the integration automatically, add @Phone to your prompt and follow the connection flow. Google’s instructions are at Make calls with the Gemini mobile app on Android.

Where ordinary calling works
This is a feature of the Gemini mobile app on Android, not Gemini on the web or Gemini in Google Messages. Google also says Phone calling is unavailable in Live chats. Its Connected Apps availability table lists Phone for Android Gemini mobile chat with personal, work, and school accounts, for users aged 13 and older, in locations and languages where the Gemini mobile app is supported. See Google’s Connected Apps availability and requirements for the current table.

What you need for ordinary Gemini calls
Google lists these prerequisites: an Android phone or tablet, an active mobile phone plan, the Gemini mobile app (including when used as the mobile assistant), contact information saved from signed-in devices, and Phone permission for the Google app. Calls are placed through the device’s default phone app.
- To let Gemini find contacts saved on signed-in devices, enable “Save contact info from your signed-in devices” in Gemini settings.
- Phone permission for the Google app is required for the Phone integration.
- Call Logs permission can help Gemini match your request to the right person; Contacts permission can let it call device contacts that are not synced to your Google Account. Google describes these as aids to contact matching, not as the required permission.
Gemini’s separate business-call feature
Google also offers a more agentic feature called “Ask Gemini to handle your everyday phone calls.” Rather than simply dialing a number, Gemini can speak with a business to ask about hours, product availability, service quotes, or other information; book, confirm, or manage appointments and reservations; navigate phone menus; and wait on hold. Give it a specific task and the details it needs, such as dates, times, preferences, or alternatives. A prompt can include @Call for me.

Eligibility and availability
This feature is not available to every Gemini user. Google’s current requirements are: age 18 or older; a US location; a Pixel 11 with a US SIM; a Google AI subscription; the Public Beta version of Phone by Google; the latest Gemini app; and English as the device language. It currently calls US phone numbers only, and access is gradually rolling out, so meeting the listed requirements does not guarantee that the feature is available on your account. Details are in Google’s instructions for having Gemini handle everyday phone calls.
These calls use your device’s mobile network and phone number, and standard carrier rates apply. Google says Gemini starts every call by disclosing that it is an AI assistant from Google calling on a recorded line on your behalf and stating your name.

How to stay in control
Disconnect Phone or change permissions
The Phone connected app is designed to work automatically with Gemini mobile, but you can disconnect it in Gemini’s Connected Apps settings. On Android, review the Google app’s permissions in system settings: Phone is required for the integration, while Call Logs and Contacts can support matching and access to unsynced contacts.
Choose whether Gemini can call from a locked phone
In Gemini’s lock-screen settings, switch “Make calls and send messages without unlocking” on or off. If you allow locked-phone actions, some tasks may still require you to unlock the device. Google explains the behavior in How your Gemini mobile app can help when your phone is locked.

Know what happens with activity and unsupported calls
Google says Android users can ask Gemini to make calls even when Keep Activity is off. A request that relies on other apps or Google services may fail in that state; Google gives calling a nearby pizza place, which depends on Maps, as an example.
