Yes—Formula 1 teams can change car software after homologation, but not through unrestricted over-the-air updates. The FIA approves a baseline, requires every intended change to be notified and identifiable, and limits how many versions of each custom application may be used. A performance update normally uses one of the season’s permitted versions; reliability fixes, bug fixes, compatibility changes and FIA-requested changes are excluded from the version count, but they remain subject to the approval and registration process.

What homologation changes—and what it does not
In F1, homologation is best understood as an approved, traceable baseline rather than a permanent software freeze. Before the season, the FIA inspects the complete electrical and electronic system. The team then operates within a process that identifies the software loaded on the car, records each version before use and limits later versions under the technical regulations.
The key restriction is on custom software. Article C8.1.7 of the 2025 FIA Formula 1 Technical Regulations states: “Competitors F1 Teams may only run custom software that has been homologated by the FIA for their control applications hosted inside or outside the ECU described in Article C8.1.” In practical terms, a team cannot write an unapproved control program on Friday night and run it in qualifying simply because the car passed its original inspection.

Homologation therefore creates three boundaries:
- Technical boundary: the application must be one the FIA has homologated for the relevant control function.
- Administrative boundary: the team must notify the FIA of intended changes before the Competition, identify the loaded version and register it before use.
- Numerical boundary: the applicable version allowance limits how many versions of each custom application can be used during the season.
The result is controlled evolution. Teams can correct, adapt and develop software, but each change must fit the regulations and leave an auditable trail.
How a 2026 F1 software change gets onto the car
The 2026 rules describe a sequence that applies to reprogrammable devices and the applications running on them.
- Inspect the complete system before the season. The FIA examines the electrical and electronic system, including the relevant control architecture and its software arrangements.
- Notify the FIA before the Competition. A team must tell the FIA about intended changes in advance of the event at which it plans to use them. The rule is not a permission to make an unreported change after arriving at the circuit.
- Identify the loaded version. Reprogrammable devices must be able to identify which software version is installed. This prevents a team from presenting one version for approval while running another.
- Register the software before use. All on-car software versions must be registered before they are used on the car. Registration makes the version part of the FIA’s record for that application.
- Use only FIA-homologated custom software. The application must have been accepted for its intended control use under Article C8.1. Approval is tied to the control application, not merely to a team’s internal file name.
- Operate under FIA access and monitoring. The FIA can access application parameters, logged events and real-time telemetry before, during and after sessions. That access gives officials a way to compare the declared version and its behaviour with what the car is actually doing.
The rules do not turn every code edit into a new performance version automatically. They distinguish changes that consume the allowance from specific reliability, bug-fix, compatibility and FIA-requested changes.

The 2026 version table sets the allowance per custom application for three groups of applications. The numbers below are the permitted versions in the FIA table, not a claim that a team can make that many unrestricted changes to the entire car.

A “version” is counted for each custom application covered by the table. It is not a universal software-token pool that a team can spend on any file. A change to an ECU team application and a change to an ERS or power-unit-control-electronics application are tracked in their respective categories.
The declining allowance matters strategically. In 2026 a team has more room to introduce performance revisions than the table provides from 2027 onward. Once the allowance is exhausted, another performance change cannot simply be declared as a new version; the team must stay within the regulation’s treatment of existing versions or rely on a change that qualifies for an exemption.

When does the FIA count a version?
The regulations define the trigger precisely: a version is deemed used once the car’s timing transponder shows that it has left the pit lane. Loading software in the garage, preparing it on a test bench or selecting it before the car crosses the pit-lane threshold does not itself meet that stated trigger.
That definition affects weekend planning. A team can prepare alternatives while the car is stationary, but the version that actually leaves the pit lane is the one that enters the FIA’s usage record. Teams therefore have to make their final selection before the relevant run and maintain accurate records of what each car has used.
The trigger also prevents a team from arguing that a version was never used after it has run on track. Once the transponder records the car leaving the pit lane, the version has consumed its place under the applicable counting rules, subject to the explicit exemptions.
Which changes consume a version allowance?
The rule treats performance development differently from changes made to keep the system functioning or to satisfy an external requirement.

The exemption is not a loophole for relabelling a performance upgrade. A change described as a “reliability fix” still has to fit that purpose and remain within the FIA’s oversight. The text removes it from the numerical count; it does not remove the requirement to declare and approve it.

- the transmission;
- the brake system;
- the tyre-pressure-monitoring system; and
- adjustable bodywork.
The standard ECU may be used only with FIA-approved software connected as specified by the FIA. This arrangement limits the opportunity to hide an unapproved control function in a separate device or an unregistered part of the car.
FIA access is not limited to a pre-season inspection. Officials can access application parameters, logged events and real-time telemetry before, during and after sessions. Those data give the governing body visibility into settings, events and system behaviour, allowing it to investigate whether the declared application is the one operating on track and whether its outputs remain within the technical rules.
What teams can realistically change during a season
Performance maps and control strategies
A new engine, energy-recovery or vehicle-control strategy is the clearest example of a counted version. It must be submitted through the required process, registered and loaded before the car leaves the pit lane. The team has to weigh the performance benefit against the limited annual allowance, especially as the permitted number falls after 2026.
Reliability corrections
If an application is changed to address a reliability problem, the change is listed among those that do not increase the version counter. That does not mean a team can deploy it informally. The version still needs the required identification, notification, registration and FIA acceptance.
Bug fixes
A software defect can be corrected without spending an additional counted version under the stated rule. The practical distinction is purpose: correcting erroneous behaviour is different from adding a new performance function. The FIA’s access to logs and parameters gives it a basis to examine that distinction.
Compatibility updates
When a custom application must work with a standard application or another custom application, the compatibility exemption prevents the version allowance from penalising a necessary interface change. The updated application remains part of the same traceable control system.

FIA-requested changes
If the FIA requires a software modification, the rule excludes that change from the version count. The exclusion recognises that the team is responding to a governing-body direction rather than choosing an additional performance development step.

The 2024 FIA rules used the same basic model: advance notification, version identification, registration before use and FIA homologation. They also contained the same reliability, bug-fix, compatibility and FIA-requested exemptions.

The comparison shows why the phrase “F1 software token” can mislead. The allowance has changed by regulation year and application category. A statement that teams had “five software versions” in 2024 was accurate for the ECU competitor-team application category but not for the ECU power-unit or ERS/power-unit-control-electronics categories listed at one version.

No. The software is constrained, not frozen. A team can load a later FIA-approved version, provided it has notified the FIA, can identify the version, registered it before use and has not exceeded the allowance for that application. Certain non-performance changes are expressly excluded from the counter, but they remain controlled updates rather than private patches.
“Controlled update” is therefore more accurate than “free software update.” The team cannot treat the car like a consumer device with an unlimited stream of unreviewed releases. Every on-car application has to fit the homologated control architecture and the FIA’s records.

- What is homologated? A series may approve source code, compiled code, ECU hardware, calibration data or the complete control system.
- Is approval required before use? Some rules may require prior approval; others may require notification, inspection or only post-event submission.
- How are versions limited? The limit may be annual, season-long, event-based or tied to a joker, evolution or rehomologation allowance.
- What exemptions exist? Reliability, safety, compatibility and governing-body requests may be treated differently.
- When is a version counted? The trigger could be registration, first activation, leaving the pit lane or another event defined by that championship.
- What can officials inspect? The relevant rules may cover parameters, logs, telemetry, binaries or only the hardware interface.
The available regulatory material firmly establishes the F1 answer described here, but it does not establish a current, citable rule for the World Endurance Championship, rallying, Formula E or historic racing. Those series require their own current sporting and technical regulations before a comparison can be made.
Are 2027 and later F1 rules settled?
The version table in the 2025 FIA regulations lists four versions for each covered application in 2027 and three from 2028 through 2030. Future technical packages can still change through the FIA’s formal rule-making process. A 21 September 2026 Formula1.com report said proposed 2027 changes, including removal of gearbox homologation, were still subject to approval by the FIA World Motor Sport Council. That means a proposal should not be described as a final 2027 requirement until the FIA publishes the approved regulation.
For teams and readers, the safe approach is to distinguish the published version table from proposed amendments. The former defines the allowance in the cited regulations; the latter may alter the wider homologation framework if formally adopted.

What “after homologation” means in practice
For a reader asking whether a team can update the ECU during the season, the answer is yes, but only through the FIA’s controlled process. For a reader asking whether a team can push a bug fix without spending a software token, the answer is generally yes under the explicit bug-fix exemption, while the notification, identification, registration and homologation requirements continue to apply.
The practical boundary is simple: a counted performance version uses one of the application’s permitted slots when the car leaves the pit lane; an eligible reliability, bug-fix, compatibility or FIA-requested change does not increase that counter. Neither category is invisible to the FIA, because the Standard ECU architecture and the inspection, registration and telemetry rules are designed to keep the software state traceable.
