In principle, yes—but no fluidic-memory prototype has yet demonstrated that a complete AI accelerator uses less energy than a modern silicon system. Fluidic memristors store information in ion or electrolyte states and can perform signal processing where the state is stored. That could reduce the costly movement of data between separate memory and processors. The strongest current result is a 2026 confined-hydrogel array that classified handwritten digits with 89.5% accuracy. It is an important device and array demonstration, not a measured replacement for a GPU, NPU or other production accelerator.

What fluidic memory is

Fluidic memory is a class of memory device in which mobile ions in a liquid, gel or electrolyte change the device’s electrical conductance. The conductance depends on the device’s recent electrical history, so the device can retain a state rather than behaving like a simple resistor. This history-dependent behavior is called memristive behavior.

A conventional digital system moves numerical weights from memory to a processor, performs arithmetic, and writes results back. A fluidic memristor can keep an analogue weight in the device and let an applied pulse alter or read that weight. Arrays of these devices can therefore combine storage, signal processing and a form of neuromorphic computation in the same physical location.

The “fluidic” label does not mean that a computer contains pumps and pipes like a conventional plumbing system. In many prototypes, ions move through nanoscale pores or hydrated polymer networks. The active material may be an aqueous hydrogel, an ion gel, or an interface between two different gels.

What the 2026 confined-hydrogel demonstration achieved

Guo and colleagues reported a confined-hydrogel fluidic memristor array in 2026. Each device combined a neutral agarose–polyacrylamide hydrogel with a positively charged polyimidazolium ion gel. The materials occupied conical micropores formed in a polyimide substrate. When voltage was applied, ions redistributed at the interface between the gels. That redistribution changed conductance and produced the device’s memory-like response.

The researchers integrated 100 devices in a 10×10 crossbar. The array reproduced several behaviours associated with biological synapses:

  • Paired-pulse facilitation and paired-pulse depression, in which the response to one pulse depends on the timing of a previous pulse.
  • Plasticity that varied with spike rate, spike number and spike width.
  • ATP-mediated chemical modulation, showing that a chemical signal could influence the electrical state.

The reported functional yield was 94% for the 10×10 array. Yield means the proportion of devices meeting the study’s functional criteria; it is not the same as production yield for millions of devices on a commercial wafer.

For a computing demonstration, digit images from the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology (MNIST) dataset were converted into voltage-pulse patterns. The fluidic array acted as a reservoir: its changing conductance transformed the input pulse sequence, and a separate readout classified the resulting signals. The reported MNIST accuracy was 89.5% (Guo et al., 2026).

That result establishes that a small fluidic array can implement useful temporal processing. It does not report joules per inference, TOPS/W, sustained throughput, memory capacity comparable with an AI accelerator, or a head-to-head silicon baseline. The 89.5% figure is an accuracy result, not an energy-efficiency result.

Why energy savings are plausible

Data movement is often the dominant cost

In a conventional von Neumann architecture, memory and arithmetic units are separate. Every layer of an AI model requires weights and activations to travel across buses, caches and memory hierarchies. Moving those values can consume more energy than the arithmetic itself, especially when a model is large or the same weights are reused many times.

Memristor-based in-memory computing addresses this bottleneck by keeping weights in the conductance of the memory array. Applying voltages to rows and measuring currents on columns performs many multiply-and-accumulate-like operations through the device physics. As Huang, Ando, Sebastian, Chang, Yang, Xia and co-authors explain, avoiding constant data shuttling can reduce both latency and energy.

Ion dynamics can provide useful temporal behaviour

Fluidic devices naturally support short-term memory, relaxation and history-dependent responses. A sensor-processing circuit could exploit those dynamics directly instead of sampling every event, converting it into a high-precision digital number and storing a long sequence in conventional memory. For event-driven or time-series workloads, doing part of the computation in the device may reduce transfers.

Self-powered operation is an active research direction

A separate 2025 study paired an iontronic fluidic memristive device with a ferrofluid triboelectric nanogenerator. The work explored neuromorphic electronics powered by energy harvested from mechanical motion. Such a system could be useful for autonomous sensors, but it remains a laboratory research direction. Demonstrating that a device can be driven by harvested energy is not the same as showing that it can run a practical AI workload with predictable accuracy and lifetime.

What has—and has not—been proven

Question What the current demonstrations show What remains unknown
Does the device remember a state? Ion redistribution creates history-dependent conductance in gel-based memristors. Long-term retention under operating temperature, humidity and mechanical stress.
Can an array compute? A 10×10 array performed reservoir processing and reached 89.5% MNIST accuracy. Performance on representative vision, language or industrial sensor models.
Is it energy-efficient? In-memory operation offers a physical route to reducing data movement. End-to-end joules per inference, including drivers, converters, readout and control.
Can it scale? 100 devices were integrated with a 94% functional yield. Millions or billions of stable, densely interconnected devices with uniform characteristics.
Can it replace a production accelerator? No cited fluidic study demonstrates such a replacement. Manufacturing, software tools, endurance, packaging, cooling and economic viability.

The energy boundary that changes the answer

Claims about “low-power” memristors can refer to very different measurements. A fair comparison must define the boundary before quoting a number.

  1. Device pulse energy: energy delivered to one memristor during a write or read pulse. This is the narrowest boundary.
  2. Array energy: device pulses plus row and column wiring, sneak-path control and sensing across an array.
  3. Inference energy: the complete workload, including digital-to-analogue and analogue-to-digital converters, voltage drivers, reference circuits, memory transfers, calibration and control logic.
  4. System energy: inference energy plus host processors, communication, power conversion, packaging and cooling.

A fluidic element can look exceptionally efficient at the first boundary while losing its advantage at the third or fourth. Analogue arrays generally require converters and peripheral circuits to communicate with digital software. Those circuits can consume substantial energy and may dominate when the array is small or the required precision is high.

Why a fluidic array does not replace a GPU today

Scale and density

The demonstrated array contains 100 devices. Modern AI models use millions to trillions of parameters, with dense interconnects, local buffering and high-bandwidth communication. Reaching useful capacity would require far larger arrays or a way to tile many arrays without losing the energy saved inside each tile.

Precision and variability

Ion motion is analogue and sensitive to material composition, pulse history, temperature and environmental conditions. Device-to-device variation can be useful for reservoir computing, but it complicates accurate weight storage. Higher precision may require repeated measurements, calibration or digital correction, adding energy and latency.

Peripheral conversion costs

Most practical systems still need converters to translate digital activations into voltages and analogue currents back into digital values. The number, resolution and sampling rate of those converters can determine total efficiency. A comparison that counts only the fluidic pulse omits this part of the computation.

Fabrication and encapsulation

The 2026 authors identify intricate fabrication and the difficulty of encapsulating aqueous systems as barriers. Water-based or hydrated materials can dry out, leak, swell or change properties when exposed to contaminants and temperature cycling. A package must preserve the fluidic state while allowing electrical contacts and, potentially, chemical access.

Integration with CMOS

A useful product would probably combine fluidic devices with conventional CMOS for control, communication, conversion and learning algorithms. The materials and processing temperatures must be compatible, or the fluidic layer must be added after transistor fabrication. That integration challenge is distinct from proving that one isolated device switches correctly.

Endurance and aging

AI hardware may perform billions of updates or reads. The available demonstrations do not establish commercial endurance, retention over years, resistance to vibration, or stable operation across a broad temperature range. Ion redistribution, polymer aging and interface changes could alter the stored conductance over time.

Where fluidic memory could make the most sense first

Fluidic memory is more plausible initially in specialized, low-data-rate systems than in general-purpose training hardware. Candidate uses include:

  • Temporal sensors: processing sound, vibration, pressure or biological signals where the timing of events carries information.
  • Edge neuromorphic nodes: extracting features locally so that a radio transmits a decision or compact feature rather than a raw data stream.
  • Adaptive chemical or biological interfaces: combining chemical responsiveness with electrical memory for laboratory or environmental sensing.
  • Reservoir computers: using the device’s natural dynamics as a nonlinear transformation, with a relatively simple trained readout.
  • Energy-harvested electronics: pairing intermittent mechanical or environmental energy with computation that tolerates sparse updates.

These applications can accept lower precision, modest throughput and task-specific algorithms more readily than a large language-model accelerator can.

  • Was the measurement a single pulse, a short laboratory run or sustained operation at a specified temperature?
  • Does the system require calibration, refresh, cooling or environmental control?
  • Is the comparison against a clearly defined CMOS baseline using the same accuracy, throughput and batch size?

Without those details, “low power” describes a component property rather than the efficiency of an AI computer.

Answers to the practical questions readers ask

Can fluidic memory replace GPUs for AI?

Not on current evidence. The 10×10 prototype demonstrates a useful neuromorphic operation, but it does not provide the scale, software compatibility, throughput or end-to-end energy data needed for a general-purpose replacement.

Are ionic memristors more energy-efficient than silicon?

They may reduce energy spent moving data by computing in memory, but no cited fluidic study establishes overall superiority to a production silicon accelerator. The answer depends on the complete system boundary and workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does neuromorphic computing automatically save power?

No. It can save energy when device dynamics reduce data movement or allow event-driven operation. Converters, calibration, control and communication can erase that advantage.

Is fluidic computing commercially available?

The cited fluidic examples are research prototypes. They do not establish a commercially available AI processor or a qualified component ecosystem for general deployment.

Bottom line

Fluidic memory offers a credible route to more efficient specialized AI hardware because ions can both store state and transform signals. The 2026 confined-hydrogel array—with 94% functional yield and 89.5% MNIST accuracy—shows that the concept works at device and small-array scale. It does not yet show that a complete fluidic computer beats a CMOS, GPU or NPU system on joules per inference. Until researchers demonstrate dense integration, stable encapsulation, endurance, conversion overheads and whole-system benchmarks, fluidic memory should be viewed as promising neuromorphic hardware research rather than a near-term replacement for mainstream AI accelerators.
