Yes. A sufficiently large, intense wildfire can build a pyrocumulonimbus (pyroCb), a thunderstorm formed by the fire itself. A pyroCb may generate cloud-to-ground lightning that ignites separate fires, while powerful inflow, downdraft and ember-transport winds can make the original fire spread faster and in unpredictable directions.
The process is conditional, not automatic: fire intensity, atmospheric moisture and stability determine whether a smoke plume merely forms a pyrocumulus cloud or develops into a severe convective storm.

What is a firestorm cloud?
A “firestorm cloud” is the informal name often used for a pyrocumulonimbus, abbreviated pyroCb. It is a deep convective storm that develops above an exceptionally hot wildfire. The fire does not simply sit beneath ordinary weather; its heat and moisture can provide the energy that builds a thunderstorm-like cloud.
The first stage is a pyrocumulus, sometimes called a fire cloud. Extreme heat makes the smoke plume buoyant, so it rises rapidly. Moisture already present in the atmosphere, together with water vapor released when vegetation burns, condenses as the plume climbs. That condensation creates the visible cloud above the fire.

If the rising plume becomes deep and convectively vigorous enough, the pyrocumulus can transition into a pyrocumulonimbus. At that point it can contain thunderstorm processes, including charge separation, strong updrafts and downdrafts, precipitation and, in the most severe cases, hail or tornadoes.
Why atmospheric stability matters
A fire’s heat alone does not guarantee a pyroCb. The NOAA-hosted Journal of Operational Meteorology paper on pyrocumulus explains that atmospheric stability controls how readily the plume can keep rising. In an unstable atmosphere, the heated plume can continue upward and deepen into a dangerous convective cloud. In a stable atmosphere, the same fire may produce a visible pyrocumulus without the major explosive effects associated with a full pyroCb.
That is why the appearance of a fire cloud has to be interpreted with the surrounding weather. In some situations, it signals that a fire is near or already undergoing a blow-up. In others, stability limits vertical growth and the cloud has less influence on fire behavior.

A mature pyroCb behaves as a thunderstorm. Within the convective cloud, vigorous updrafts and downdrafts move ice particles, supercooled water and other hydrometeors through regions with different temperatures. Collisions and separation of electrical charges can then create a lightning-producing electric field, just as in other thunderstorms.
Lightning from a pyroCb is especially dangerous because it can occur beyond the visible flame front. A cloud-to-ground strike can hit a receptive tree, log, grassland or other dry fuel away from the active fire. If that fuel remains hot and dry long enough, the strike can become a new ignition rather than merely a flash.

NOAA Storm Prediction Center fire-weather forecaster Nick Nauslar summarized the wider weather relationship this way: “Lightning striking a tree and igniting it is the most common weather cause for wildfires.” In a pyroCb, the lightning source is unusual because the fire has helped create the storm that produces the strikes.
Lightning does not guarantee a new fire
A strike only starts a wildfire when it meets receptive fuel and suitable conditions. Moist vegetation, rain-cooled ground or a lack of continuity in fuels can prevent ignition. Conversely, prolonged drought and abundant dry fuels increase the chance that a strike smolders and later develops into a visible fire. The important point is that pyroCb lightning can create ignition opportunities well away from the original perimeter; it does not mean every flash will start a separate blaze.

Lightning is only one part of the hazard. The storm can alter the wind field around the fire in several interacting ways.
Fire-generated inflow
As hot air rises over the fire, air from the surroundings is drawn inward to replace it. This inflow can strengthen the fire’s oxygen supply and increase flame intensity. Wind direction may shift as the circulation changes, making a previously predictable flank behave like a new head fire.
Downdrafts and outflow
Convective clouds also produce descending air. A downdraft can reach the ground and spread outward as a gust front. These winds may arrive suddenly, change direction and exceed the winds that firefighters were prepared for. NOAA’s Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) documentation warns that pyroCb-related erratic winds can spread fires quickly alongside cloud-to-ground lightning.

Ember transport
Strong, turbulent winds can lift burning embers from the main fire and carry them into unburned vegetation. Spot fires may appear across roads, ridges or other gaps that would normally slow a flame front. Because the gusts can be intermittent and directionally variable, the locations of new ignitions are difficult to predict from the perimeter alone.

The same buoyant plume that builds the cloud can loft smoke, embers and heat high above the ground. A rapidly deepening column is a warning that the fire and atmosphere are becoming coupled: the fire is feeding the storm, and the storm is feeding back on the fire through wind and precipitation processes.
What other hazards can a pyroCb produce?
Pyrocumulonimbus storms can create a combination of hazards that ordinary wildfire forecasts may not capture:
- Erratic surface winds: inflow, downdrafts and outflow can produce abrupt speed and direction changes.
- Cloud-to-ground lightning: strikes can ignite fuels outside the existing fire area.
- Ember showers and spot fires: turbulent transport can carry burning material into unburned vegetation.
- Hail: strong updrafts can keep ice particles suspended long enough for hail to form.
- Heavy rain: some pyroCbs produce precipitation, although rain does not make every part of the fire safe and can be accompanied by dangerous outflows.
- Tornadoes: the rotating wind environment near an intense fire-generated storm can, in rare cases, produce a tornado.
- Visibility and aviation hazards: dense smoke and a tall convective column can obstruct aircraft operations and create severe turbulence or rapidly changing conditions.
These outcomes are not present in every event. The combination depends on plume depth, atmospheric stability, moisture and the storm’s internal structure.
Documented pyroCb examples
NOAA case material describes pyroCb lightning and severe fire behavior during the Dixie Fire and Bootleg Fire. The Bootleg event also produced a rare tornado that the National Weather Service confirmed. These cases illustrate why a fire-generated storm is more than a visual curiosity: its wind circulation can create phenomena associated with severe thunderstorms while the ground remains an active wildfire.

NOAA’s GLM documentation also reports that the satellite captured frequent lightning in a pyroCb cloud over the 2022 McKinney Fire. Space-based lightning observations are valuable because a storm can be obscured by smoke or located in terrain where ground-based observers have limited visibility.
How to compare events
There is no single “typical” pyroCb. Meaningful comparisons use several measurements and observed outcomes rather than the cloud’s appearance alone.
| Comparison factor | What it indicates |
|---|---|
| Fire intensity | How much heat is available to drive a buoyant plume and sustain convection. |
| Plume depth | Whether the smoke column remains shallow or grows into a deep convective storm. |
| Atmospheric stability | How freely the plume can rise; stability can either support or suppress vertical development. |
| Moisture | The water vapor available for cloud formation and precipitation. |
| Lightning frequency | The degree of electrical activity and the potential for new ignitions. |
| Wind and downdraft behavior | How quickly the fire can change direction or intensify at the surface. |
| Ember transport | The likelihood of spot fires beyond the established perimeter. |
| Observed outcomes | Evidence such as new ignitions, hail, tornadoes, rain or documented rapid spread. |
How high can pyroCb smoke travel?
PyroCbs can inject smoke far above the boundary layer where most wildfire smoke remains. NOAA reported that about 300,000 metric tons of smoke from the 2017 Pacific Northwest fires reached more than 7 miles into the upper troposphere. Particles then rose another 7 miles into the stratosphere and persisted for nine months. That example shows why a fire-generated storm can affect air quality and atmospheric conditions far from the burn area and long after flames are extinguished.
The figure is a NOAA report about the 2017 Pacific Northwest fires, not a universal height or residence time for all pyroCbs. Smoke injection varies with the fire’s intensity, the storm’s vertical structure and the background atmosphere.
Does rain from a firestorm put the fire out?
Some pyroCbs produce rain, but precipitation is not a guarantee of immediate fire suppression. Rain may wet fuels in one location while downdrafts and gust fronts create dangerous winds nearby. A storm can also produce lightning before, during or after precipitation reaches the ground. Fire managers therefore treat rain, wind, lightning and plume behavior as separate hazards rather than assuming that a visible shower ends the event.

Can pyroCb lightning start fires far from the original blaze?
Yes. Cloud-to-ground strikes can land outside the existing flame front, and a receptive fuel bed can ignite there. The distance and number of new ignitions depend on the storm’s electrical activity, wind field, fuel moisture and the geography around the fire. A satellite-detected flash confirms electrical activity, but it does not by itself prove that a new ground fire began; that requires confirmation at the surface.
What does this mean for wildfire risk overall?
PyroCbs are a feedback mechanism that can amplify an already extreme fire, not the primary explanation for every wildfire. A 2025 U.S. Geological Survey summary found that ignition sources explained 60%–80% of interannual variation in fire frequency and approximately 20% of area burned across most U.S. regions. Those percentages describe broad U.S. wildfire patterns and are not pyroCb-specific. They show why the original ignition source still matters even when later fire-generated weather drives rapid spread.
Once a fire becomes intense enough to build a pyroCb, however, conventional assumptions about wind, perimeter growth and lightning exposure can fail. The event must be monitored as both a wildfire and a developing convective storm.

What should residents and responders watch for?
People near a large wildfire should follow official evacuation and incident-management instructions rather than trying to interpret a cloud alone. Warning signs that conditions may be becoming more dangerous include:
- A smoke column that suddenly grows taller, darker or more vertically organized.
- Rapid wind shifts, sudden gusts or wind blowing outward from the fire rather than following the forecast pattern.
- Thunder, lightning or radar indications of a convective cloud over the fire.
- Embers appearing well ahead of the known fire edge.
- Reports of hail, heavy showers, rotating winds or aircraft restrictions near the plume.
These signs do not provide a do-it-yourself forecast. They indicate that official fire-weather, emergency-management and aviation updates become especially important because conditions can change faster than a ground crew or resident can safely react.
Quick Recap
Key answers at a glance
- Can a wildfire make its own thunderstorm? Yes, if intense heat drives a moist plume into deep convection and the atmosphere allows it to grow.
- Can a pyroCb create lightning? Yes. Charge separation inside the convective cloud can produce cloud-to-ground strikes.
- Can that lightning start new fires? Yes, when strikes hit receptive, sufficiently dry fuels.
- Can the cloud spread the original wildfire? Yes. Inflow, downdrafts, erratic outflow winds and ember transport can accelerate and redirect spread.
- Does every fire cloud become dangerous? No. Atmospheric stability, moisture and fire intensity determine whether a pyrocumulus develops into a severe pyroCb and which hazards occur.
