Yes. You can run different playlists to separate YouTube channels concurrently with FFmpeg, provided each output uses the correct channel’s stream destination and stream key. Create or schedule a separate YouTube live event for each channel; FFmpeg sends the media, while YouTube Studio or the YouTube API manages the events.
How the pieces fit together
- FFmpeg reads media, selects or maps streams, and sends output to an ingest destination. You can use separate FFmpeg jobs for separate playlists or configure independent outputs. FFmpeg’s documentation covers multiple outputs and manual stream selection with
-map: FFmpeg documentation. - A YouTube broadcast is the event viewers watch; it becomes a distinct YouTube video. A YouTube live stream is the incoming audio-video feed and its settings. A broadcast is bound to a stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API guide explains these resource roles and notes that each channel needs a different stream resource: Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.
- YouTube Studio or the API creates and manages the event and its state. FFmpeg does not create the scheduled event just by running.
Set up different playlists on different channels
- Create or schedule an event on each channel. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule the live event for the intended channel. Alternatively, create and manage broadcast and stream resources through the YouTube Live Streaming API. See Schedule a live stream and YouTube Live Streaming API.
- Get the destination and stream key for each event. In the event’s encoder settings, note its server URL and stream key. Keep each pair associated with the right channel and playlist. Do not mix keys between channels: YouTube requires a different stream resource for each channel.
- Configure independent FFmpeg outputs. Run one FFmpeg job per playlist, targeting that playlist’s channel-specific ingest URL and key. Or configure separate outputs in one FFmpeg process when that better suits your setup. Use FFmpeg’s output and stream-selection options deliberately; its documentation describes multiple outputs and
-map, but does not prescribe a universal playlist-scheduling script. - Start each encoder and check its preview. Confirm that the intended playlist, video, and audio appear in the preview for the correct YouTube event, and check stream health before transitioning the event to live. YouTube’s Studio workflow is described in its live-streaming help.
Does FFmpeg schedule the YouTube events?
No. Treat scheduling and media transmission as separate jobs. YouTube Studio or the API handles broadcast creation and state changes; FFmpeg reads and sends the media. A script can coordinate when FFmpeg starts, but it does not replace creating the YouTube events. One FFmpeg process or separate jobs?
Either approach can work. Separate jobs make it easier to pair each playlist with its own input, output destination, and stream key. A single process with multiple outputs may suit an operator who wants to manage outputs together, but each output still needs to be configured for the right channel and media. FFmpeg documents output and stream-mapping behavior; it does not specify a single recommended configuration for scheduling independent YouTube playlists.

There is no universal simultaneous-output limit established by the cited FFmpeg or YouTube documentation. In practice, each output can add encoding or processing work and consume upstream bandwidth. Actual capacity depends on your machine, encoding settings, input workload, and upload connection; test your configuration rather than assuming a particular number of concurrent channels.

Reuse a stream or create separate ones?
YouTube describes reusing a stream resource for events at different times, while simultaneous broadcasts that need independent settings call for separate stream resources. For separate channels, the API guide is explicit: each channel needs its own stream resource. That is why you should pair each event with the stream destination and key belonging to its channel, not treat one key as a universal destination.
Local FFmpeg or a cloud encoder?
Local FFmpeg gives you direct control over the inputs and outputs, but the jobs use your machine and its internet connection. YouTube also describes cloud encoder services as an option for distributing a feed across channels or platforms; no particular provider is required for the FFmpeg method. Choose based on how much control you need and whether you can keep local processing and upload capacity available for every output. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance.
