YouTube Live Settings for AMD AMF in OBS: Recommended CBR, Bitrate, and Keyframes

For standard SDR YouTube Live with AMD AMF in OBS, use CBR, 2-second keyframes, and a bitrate matched to YouTube’s resolution-and-frame-rate recommendations. Test upload stability before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream from OBS using an AMD AMF hardware encoder, start with CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Use a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, then test and monitor stream health.

Recommended AMD AMF settings for YouTube Live

In OBS, open Settings > Output, switch Output Mode to Advanced if needed, and configure the streaming encoder options exposed by your OBS build, AMD GPU, and driver. Labels and available controls can vary.

  • Encoder: Choose the AMD hardware encoder available on your system. For a conventional SDR workflow, use H.264 unless your intended YouTube ingest workflow and hardware support another codec.
  • Rate control: CBR (constant bitrate), following YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
  • Bitrate: Select YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate for your resolution and frame rate, then verify your upload connection can sustain it.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds. YouTube says keyframes should be two seconds apart and must not exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the broadcast you intend to deliver. YouTube’s bitrate recommendation changes with both.
  • Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for live input.

YouTube supports live input over RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs; which options you can use depends on the YouTube workflow, OBS build, and encoder hardware. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and OBS’s Advanced Recording Settings Guide.

Choose the bitrate for your resolution and frame rate

The following are YouTube-published recommended H.264 ingest bitrates, not guarantees of visual quality or uninterrupted delivery. YouTube also lists minimum bitrates; consult its full current table for other output combinations.

#1 Best Overall
ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card | PCIe 5.0, HDMI 2.1b, DisplayPort 2.1a, 2.5-slot design, Axial-tech Fans, 0dB Technology
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Output YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate
720p60 8 Mbps
1080p30 14 Mbps
1080p60 17 Mbps
1440p30 21 Mbps
1440p60 34 Mbps
2160p30 (4K) 42 Mbps
2160p60 (4K) 50 Mbps

These recommendations come from YouTube’s current H.264 table, accessed in 2026. A connection that cannot hold the selected bitrate steadily can lead to delivery problems; YouTube advises choosing a reliable quality based on available upload capacity and running a speed test. Leave headroom rather than planning to use every bit of measured upload bandwidth.

Set up OBS and validate the stream

  1. Create or select a YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Copy its stream key and server URL into the corresponding OBS stream settings. Treat the key like a password; do not share or publish it.
  2. Select the AMD encoder. In OBS, open Settings > Output and choose the available AMD hardware encoder under streaming. If the encoder or an expected control is missing, check that the GPU, operating system, driver, and installed OBS build support it. OBS documents AMD AMF support on Windows and Linux and points users to compatible-GPU information.
  3. Configure the live rate controls. Select CBR, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, and enter the bitrate matching the intended resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s H.264 table. Set the output resolution and frame rate in OBS to match the broadcast plan.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test. Include audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. A static desktop test may not reveal issues that appear with motion or full audio.
  5. Monitor both applications. During the test, review YouTube’s stream-health messages and OBS statistics for dropped frames or encoder overload. If either reports trouble, reduce output demands or bitrate to a level the connection and hardware can maintain, then test again.

YouTube’s guidance is to test with representative audio and movement before going live, and to monitor stream health during the event. Its encoder settings guidance covers the platform-side requirements.

CBR for live streaming is not OBS’s CQP recording preset

OBS’s documented AMD values—CQP rate control, CQ 16–23, a 2-second keyframe interval, Quality preset, High profile, and Max B-frames 0—are a recording baseline in its Advanced Recording Settings Guide. CQ 16–23 is not a live-stream bitrate recommendation. For YouTube live ingest, use CBR and choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for the selected output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those OBS recording values do not establish a universally best AMF live preset across GPU generations, drivers, operating systems, or OBS versions. Encoder controls differ by the system, so use the live requirements above as the platform baseline rather than assuming every machine exposes identical labels.

HDR uses a different setup

Do not apply the standard SDR H.264 setup unchanged to HDR. YouTube’s OBS HDR instructions describe an HEVC workflow with a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG in those instructions. Confirm your GPU, driver, OBS build, and stream-key protocol expose the required options, and follow YouTube’s specific HDR guidance: Stream in HDR on YouTube.

Troubleshoot common AMD AMF streaming problems

  • YouTube reports an unstable stream or dropped frames: The upload connection may not sustain the configured bitrate. Run a speed test, reduce bitrate or output demands, and repeat a representative test. YouTube recommends selecting reliable quality based on the upload connection.
  • OBS shows encoder overload: The encoder may be unable to keep up with the selected workload on that GPU, driver, or OBS build. Try a lower resolution or frame rate and test again; available AMF controls and performance vary by system.
  • The stream is rejected or does not connect: Confirm the selected stream key and server URL match the YouTube Live Control Room entry, and that the key has not been reset or mistyped. Prefer RTMPS as YouTube recommends.
  • Bitrate seems right for 1080p but delivery still struggles: Check frame rate as well as resolution. YouTube’s recommendation is 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60, so the frame-rate choice affects the bitrate target.
  • A guide’s AMD settings do not appear in OBS: Settings depend on the installed OBS build, GPU, operating system, and driver. OBS documents AMF on Windows and Linux but does not establish a single menu layout for every configuration.
  • HDR controls or expected colors are missing: Check hardware and software support for HEVC/Main 10, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG, then follow YouTube’s HDR instructions rather than the SDR H.264 steps.
