Sometimes—but “background” does not always mean invisible or independent of a desktop session. A task that uses an API or command line can often run without a graphical desktop; a bot that clicks and types in an app may still need a particular Windows session, screen setup, and permissions. Reliability depends on the specific product and execution mode, so verify what happens when the machine is locked, signed out, or in use.
What does “background” mean for desktop automation?
There are two distinct cases:
- Non-GUI automation: A script, API, or service integration performs the task without operating the visible application interface. If the target app offers a supported API or command-line interface, consider whether it can replace screen-based actions.
- Unattended GUI automation: A bot clicks, types, or reads elements in a desktop app without a person supervising it. It may run without a person at the keyboard, but still depend on a managed or interactive desktop session.
Microsoft describes Power Automate creating and managing an RDP session for an unattended desktop flow, then signing out when the flow completes. UiPath separately distinguishes background work that does not use UI Automation activities from UI automation that cannot run under a locked screen in its documented background-automation mode. These are product-specific behaviors, not universal rules. Microsoft: Run unattended desktop flows; UiPath: Background processes.

When can an unattended desktop flow run?
Power Automate on Windows
Microsoft’s documented setup requires an available machine with all users signed out. The flow creates an RDP session, locks the screen during execution, and signs out after it finishes. On Windows 10 and Windows 11, an active Windows session prevents an unattended run in the documented configuration. Microsoft also warns that a different RDP resolution can hide interface elements or misdirect mouse and keyboard actions. Check the current documentation for your exact Windows and Power Automate setup before deployment. Microsoft: Run unattended desktop flows.

UiPath
UiPath’s documentation says background automations that do not interact with the UI can run in the background, while automations using UI Automation activities cannot run under a locked screen in its background-automation mode. It also discusses differences between user sessions and Session 0. Confirm the relevant rules for the UiPath version, robot configuration, and task rather than applying this behavior to another platform. UiPath: Background processes.

What can make a desktop flow unreliable?
Screen-driven actions depend on more than the automation itself. Microsoft identifies several environmental and interface factors that can affect whether elements are visible or selectors still match:
- Screen resolution and DPI scaling
- Operating-system version and application window mode
- Permissions and the account used to run the flow
- Changes to the target app’s interface or UI properties
- Differences between the authoring machine and unattended runtime
A flow built and tested under one screen configuration may behave differently under another. Microsoft recommends testing on the machine used for unattended execution and using stable selectors, fallback selectors, and retries where appropriate. Microsoft: Troubleshoot desktop flows.

How to improve reliability before deployment
- Choose the right execution method. Decide whether the task truly requires clicking and typing in a desktop app. If a supported API, command-line interface, or service integration can do the work, assess that option instead of assuming a GUI bot is necessary.
- Confirm session behavior. Read the product documentation for what happens when the screen is locked, users are signed in or signed out, or someone else is using the machine. Confirm the required session type, permissions, and automation account.
- Match the runtime to the test setup. Keep the operating-system version, resolution, DPI scaling, window mode, and relevant permissions consistent between authoring and unattended execution.
- Build resilience into UI actions. Prefer stable element attributes over coordinates when possible. Add fallback selectors and retries, and test them on the actual unattended machine.
- Make failures observable. Enable useful run logs and screenshots or video logs where the platform supports them. When investigating a failure, check application and system logs and reproduce it with the same account and target environment.
- Check licensing and capacity. Microsoft says unattended Power Automate desktop flows require a Process plan and an available machine. Its cited documentation does not specify a price or a required hardware model; verify current licensing and machine requirements before budgeting. Microsoft: Run unattended desktop flows.
How to compare automation options
There is no neutral cross-product reliability benchmark in the cited product documentation. Compare the concrete deployment requirements instead:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| GUI interaction versus API or script capability | Determines whether the task depends on a desktop interface at all. |
| Locked, signed-out, and concurrently used sessions | Products and execution modes handle these conditions differently. |
| Operating systems and session technologies | Support may depend on OS version and whether the tool uses an interactive or managed session. |
| Permissions and credentials | The automation account must be able to access the machine and target application appropriately. |
| Resolution, DPI, and app updates | Changes can affect element visibility, selectors, or coordinate-based actions. |
| Logging, retries, and recovery | These determine how readily a failed run can be diagnosed and handled. |
| Licensing and machine capacity | Unattended execution may require a specific license and an available host. |
What to verify for a dedicated machine
A dedicated Windows machine can be one possible host, but dedicated hardware alone does not guarantee reliable runs. Microsoft’s documentation requires an available machine for its unattended flows but does not recommend a particular hardware class or establish that a mini PC improves reliability. Session configuration, licensing, application access, and a consistent runtime environment still need to be addressed. Microsoft: Run unattended desktop flows.
