Usually, use a volumizing brush dryer on towel-damp hair—not hair that is soaking or dripping wet. Remove excess water first, then follow the instructions for your exact appliance: models can differ, and there is no universal wetness rule for every brush dryer.
What “wet hair” means for a brush dryer
Hair that is towel-damp is different from hair that is still saturated. L’Oréal Paris says damp rather than soaking-wet hair is ideal for its blow-dryer-brush tutorial (L’Oréal Paris), and the Remington Hydraluxe volumizing brush manual says to squeeze excess moisture out with a towel (Remington Hydraluxe manual). These are model- and instruction-specific examples, not permission to start with soaking-wet hair on every brush dryer.

There is no broadly applicable percentage of dryness established by these recommendations. If your appliance’s manual specifies a starting hair condition or a separate pre-drying step, use that guidance rather than assuming the instructions for another brand apply.

- Remove excess water. Towel-blot or gently squeeze your hair until it is damp rather than dripping, as described in the cited L’Oréal tutorial and Remington manual.
- Detangle and section as directed. Work gently; L’Oréal’s tutorial recommends sectioning hair. Follow your brush’s manual for any model-specific styling steps.
- Choose the lowest effective heat. The American Academy of Dermatology advises using the lowest heat setting for heat-styling tools (AAD guidance).
- Keep the brush moving. Avoid leaving concentrated heat on one area. A BaBylissPRO dryer manual advises keeping a dryer in motion while drying (BaBylissPRO manual).
- Consider heat protectant. L’Oréal’s tutorial and a Remington dryer manual recommend heat protectant before blow-drying (L’Oréal Paris; Remington manual). It is a preparation step, not a guarantee against heat damage.
- Check current model-specific safety information. Read the manual and check relevant safety notices for the exact appliance before use.
What the heat-damage evidence can—and cannot—tell you
A 2011 study in Annals of Dermatology repeatedly treated standardized hair tresses under controlled dryer conditions. It reported that surface damage tended to increase with temperature; in those experimental conditions, drying from 15 cm away with continuous motion caused less damage than natural drying (study).

That experiment was not a consumer trial of every volumizing brush dryer, every routine, or every person’s hair. It does not establish that a particular brush is damage-free or that one drying method is always better for an individual. The practical guidance supported by the sources is to avoid unnecessarily high heat, keep the tool moving, and follow the instructions for your appliance.
Check warnings for the exact product
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warning identified in the reviewed sources concerns specific DEISNGB hair dryer brushes sold through TikTok Shop; it is not a warning about every brush dryer (CPSC notice). Check whether any warning or recall applies to your exact make and model instead of generalizing from a notice about a different product.
