You cannot establish that a fan-made game port is safe from its name, hosting platform, or a clean antivirus scan alone. Before downloading, trace the link back to the creator’s established page, check that the file matches the announced release, and take any security warning seriously. If you cannot resolve a warning, do not run the file.
Start with the creator’s own download link
Find the project’s established page or official creator account yourself, then follow the download link published there. A link posted by someone else—even in a familiar community or on a platform you normally trust—does not establish who supplied the file. Steam advises users to be skeptical of software linked by others, and itch.io’s creator guidance encourages direct uploads rather than third-party download services. These are useful provenance signals, not guarantees that an individual file is safe.

Be cautious with unsolicited links, especially if a download asks for account credentials or bundles the port with unrelated utilities. Steam warns that gaming-targeted malware can be disguised as pirated software, fake demos or betas, cheats, and gaming utilities. See Steam’s account security recommendations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck that the file matches the announced release
Compare the download page and file description with the creator’s own release announcement. Check the game name, creator or publisher account, intended platform, version, and description. A mismatch, unexpected extra installer, or request to sign in where the creator did not announce one is a reason to stop and verify—not a detail to ignore.

A platform’s rules do not certify every upload. itch.io prohibits malware, spyware, and adware in its creator policy and encourages direct file uploads, but that policy is not an independent safety approval of each download. Read its creator quality guidelines as platform policy, not a guarantee about a particular port.
Use digital signatures only when you know who should have signed
A valid digital signature can help identify the publisher when you already know which signer to expect. It is not a universal requirement for fan-made ports, and a signature by itself does not prove software is benign.

For example, itch.io says its own app and installers are digitally signed with a certificate in the name of itch corp. It advises users not to use an installer pretending to be the itch app if it lacks that signature. This check applies to itch’s own installer; it does not mean a fan-made game port should carry an itch.io signature. See itch.io’s Windows installation guidance.
Scan the file, but do not treat a clean result as proof
Keep antivirus protection enabled and current, and scan the download. A scan can detect known or suspected threats, but it cannot prove that malware is absent: Steam cautions that some bespoke malware may evade common antivirus detection. A clean result is one signal, not a safety guarantee.

If antivirus flags the port, do not bypass the warning
False positives can happen, but a detection still deserves attention. Steam recommends taking alerts seriously; if you are unsure whether a file is malicious, report it and contact your antivirus provider rather than immediately creating an exception. Its guidance is at Antivirus software reports Steam games are malicious.

- Do not disable antivirus just to launch the game.
- Do not create a broad folder exclusion to make the warning disappear.
- If the creator’s release details do not explain the detection, stop and ask the platform or security vendor.
itch.io specifically warns Windows users not to exclude the entire %APPDATA%itch folder, because doing so would stop antivirus from scanning installed games. That warning concerns the itch app; it is not a general Windows instruction to change exclusions.
