Continuous noise from servers or data-center equipment can disturb sleep, even when it is a steady hum rather than a sudden bang. But there is no established, universal data-center-specific sound threshold that predicts sleep effects. What matters is the sound reaching a bedroom, its character and timing, the local background, the building, and the person’s sensitivity.
How can a steady hum disturb sleep?
Noise does not have to be intermittent to matter. Environmental-noise evidence links sound exposure with sleep disturbance, and a continuous drone can remain audible at night when other background sounds are lower. Data centers may produce ongoing mechanical sound, including from cooling equipment.
The evidence specific to people living near data centers is more limited than the general environmental-noise evidence. A 2024 report by the Joint Legislative Audit and Review Commission of the Commonwealth of Virginia describes a steady “drone” or “hum,” and records both selected local measurements and residents’ accounts of disruption and health experiences. Those accounts show that residents report problems; they do not establish that a particular facility caused each reported symptom, or that the same effects occur near data centers generally. What do the WHO noise figures mean?
The World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe’s 2011 community-noise fact sheet gives two figures that are useful context, but they measure different things and should not be treated as interchangeable:

Why one decibel reading may not answer the question
A number without its measurement conditions can be misleading. The sound reaching a bedroom depends on distance, building construction, open or closed windows and doors, background sound, and whether equipment is operating in a particular way. Low-frequency or tonal sound may also be missed or obscured by a simple reading.

A useful assessment records where and when the sound was measured, the weighting and averaging interval, background conditions, and equipment operating state. Project assessments illustrate why site context matters: Vantage’s Dublin DUB-13 assessment compares source sound with the existing background at residential locations. Its findings apply to that project’s locations and conditions, not automatically to another facility with different equipment, distance, terrain, or neighborhood. Keep a short, consistent log
Record the time and place, whether the sound is indoors or outdoors, what it sounds like (for example, a hum, drone, or tone), whether windows and doors are open, and any noticeable change in operating conditions. A repeated pattern is more useful than an isolated observation.

Use a consumer meter only as an initial record
A consumer sound level meter can help capture indicative readings over time. Note what the device measures and its settings; A-weighted and C-weighted readings are not the same, and a device that reports just one simple number may not capture important low-frequency or tonal characteristics. A consumer meter cannot identify the source, establish a health effect, or prove regulatory compliance. Treat its readings as preliminary documentation, not a formal finding.

Ask for a site-specific assessment when the issue persists
If the sound materially affects sleep or is part of a planning or enforcement dispute, contact the relevant local authority or a qualified acoustics professional. Ask the assessor to specify:
- the measurement locations, including whether readings are taken inside or outside a residence;
- the time of day, measurement duration, and averaging interval;
- the weighting used and whether low-frequency or tonal sound is assessed;
- the background sound and relevant equipment operating conditions; and
- whether the results address the requirements of the applicable local process.
There is no established universal data-center noise reading from which to infer an individual sleep effect. A local assessment is needed to understand a particular exposure.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say
- General environmental-noise evidence supports the conclusion that ongoing sound can disturb sleep.
- Data-center-specific reports document local measurements and resident accounts, but the reviewed material is not a controlled body of sleep-health research proving causation across facilities.
- WHO community-noise guidance does not set a separate data-center sleep threshold.
- Without measurements and site context, no facility’s actual exposure—or its effect on a particular person—can be inferred.
