Short answer: ChatGPT’s mobile Sketch flow lets you draw, add written instructions, and generate an image that you can edit in ChatGPT, save to your device, share, or remove by deleting the conversation that created it. Whether it is “private” depends on your account settings, chat mode, and (for work accounts) your organization’s policies. OpenAI’s Terms of Use effective January 1, 2026 assign output ownership to you as between you and OpenAI, to the extent applicable law permits, but they do not make every image exclusive or clear third-party rights. You remain responsible for lawful use, permissions, and accurate disclosure of AI involvement where the terms require it.
What ChatGPT Sketch does
Sketch is a mobile ChatGPT workflow for turning a quick drawing into a generated image. OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT help page describes the sequence:

- Open ChatGPT on a mobile device and type
@in the composer. - Choose Sketch from the available options.
- Draw in the canvas, then confirm the sketch.
- Add written instructions describing the desired subject, style, colors, composition, or changes.
- Send the request; ChatGPT generates the image in the conversation.
The drawing is an input to the image request, not a guarantee that every line will be reproduced exactly. Treat the result as generated output that may need review, correction, and rights checks before publication.
Are Sketch images private?
“Private” is not an absolute label. It is the result of how your account is configured, which chat mode you use, who administers the account, and how long the conversation is retained. OpenAI says consumer data can be stored worldwide on OpenAI and trusted-provider systems, with access limited to authorized personnel and service providers for permitted purposes; it also says it does not sell consumer data or share it with advertisers. Personal accounts: turn off model improvement
On a personal ChatGPT account, use the Data Controls setting labeled Improve the model for everyone. When it is off, OpenAI states that new conversations are not used to train its models. The conversations can still appear in your chat history, so this switch is a training-use control, not a deletion or secrecy switch. Existing chats are not erased simply because you change the setting.
Because labels and menu locations can change, open ChatGPT’s settings, find Data Controls, and verify the current value before uploading a sensitive sketch or instruction. If a conversation has already been created while improvement was enabled, changing the control later does not turn that old chat into a deleted record.
Temporary Chat: less history, limited safety retention
Start a Temporary Chat before creating the image when you do not want the conversation in normal history. OpenAI’s data-controls documentation says that, while temporary, these chats do not appear in chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve OpenAI models. It also warns that they may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. Temporary therefore reduces routine retention and model-improvement use; it is not a promise that no copy exists anywhere during that safety window.

Managed workspaces: your administrator’s rules apply
Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces are not used to train OpenAI models by default, according to OpenAI’s current data-controls information. That default does not make a work image universally confidential. Workspace administrators can set retention periods, access permissions, export rules, and compliance controls. A company may also retain or review content under its own policies. Before using a client drawing, unreleased product concept, personal data, or trade secret, check your organization’s workspace notice and ask the administrator which users can access the conversation and how long it is kept.
How to edit a generated Sketch image
Editing can happen inside ChatGPT or in another image editor after you save the file. The in-product route is quickest for iterative changes, but it is not pixel-precise.
Edit with a selected area
- Open the generated image in the conversation.
- Choose the image’s selection tool.
- Highlight the region you want changed.
- Enter a written instruction, such as “replace the mug with a blue ceramic cup while keeping the hands and lighting.”
- Submit the edit and inspect the complete image, including edges outside the selection.
OpenAI cautions that selections are not always exact and that an edit can extend beyond the highlighted area. A narrow highlight can therefore alter nearby objects, text, shadows, or a person’s features. If the first result damages an unaffected area, describe what must remain unchanged and regenerate, or save the image and finish the repair in an external editor.

Edit by describing the change directly
You can also give a text instruction without selecting a region. This is useful for global changes such as “make the background a flat cream color,” “switch to a square composition,” or “remove the lettering.” Review proportions, details, and any text after each generation; the model may reinterpret more than the sentence appears to target.

Save the image first when you need exact masking, layers, typography, color values, print dimensions, or a non-generative retouch. An external editor gives you a separate working file and lets you preserve the original ChatGPT output. It does not, however, change who owns input material, whether a depicted person has given permission, or whether a logo or character is protected.
Saving, sharing, and deleting a Sketch
Save a copy
Use the image’s Save control to download it to your device. The downloaded file is your working copy for editing, backup, delivery, or publication. Saving does not remove the conversation from ChatGPT, so apply the appropriate history or deletion step separately if the prompt or source sketch is sensitive.

Share carefully
ChatGPT can pass the image to another app through the device share flow. Before sending it, check for private prompts, names, faces, metadata, client instructions, or other content that the recipient should not receive. Sharing a file is a new disclosure decision; it is not governed solely by the privacy setting you used while generating it.
Delete the originating conversation
OpenAI’s Images in ChatGPT help page says that deleting the conversation that created an image removes the image from My images. Delete the originating chat, not merely a downloaded copy or a later conversation in which you mentioned the image. Deletion in ChatGPT also cannot retract a file you already emailed, uploaded to a service, or shared with another person.
Who owns a ChatGPT Sketch image?
OpenAI’s Terms of Use, effective January 1, 2026, state: “As between you and OpenAI, and to the extent permitted by applicable law, you (a) retain your ownership rights in Input and (b) own the Output.” For a Sketch workflow, your drawing and written prompt are Input, and the generated image is Output. This is a contractual allocation between you and OpenAI, qualified by the law that applies where you are located.
The clause does not guarantee that a particular country’s copyright law will recognize exclusive copyright in every AI-generated element. Registration, enforcement, and the amount of human creative contribution can vary by jurisdiction. If exclusivity matters for a logo, book illustration, or commissioned work, obtain advice specific to the country in which you will rely on the rights and keep records of your original drawing, instructions, selections, and human edits.
Ownership is not exclusivity
The same Terms of Use warn: “Due to the nature of our Services and artificial intelligence generally, output may not be unique and other users may receive similar output from our Services.” Another user could therefore receive an image with similar composition, colors, or subject. Do not promise a client that a generated image is globally unique merely because you created the prompt or paid for access.

Generally, OpenAI’s terms let you use the Output commercially as between you and OpenAI, subject to applicable law. That can include a product illustration, marketing asset, client deliverable, print, or other paid use. Commercial permission from OpenAI is only one part of the analysis. The terms also say, “You are responsible for Content, including ensuring that it does not violate any applicable law or these Terms.”

Third-party rights remain your responsibility
A generated image can contain recognizable faces, brand symbols, copyrighted characters, or visual elements resembling someone else’s work even when your prompt did not request an infringement. Inspect the result rather than assuming the model cleared it. Replace questionable elements, secure permission, or abandon that version. The user-responsibility clause in the Terms of Use means a commercial sale is not automatically safe simply because the image came from ChatGPT.
Be accurate about AI involvement
OpenAI’s terms prohibit representing output as human-generated when it was not. Do not describe a wholly generated Sketch image as hand-drawn by you. If a client, marketplace, regulator, or platform requires AI disclosure, follow that rule as well. You can accurately explain that you supplied the sketch and direction, then used ChatGPT to generate and revise the image.

- Classify the input. Mark whether the sketch contains a face, client material, confidential information, a logo, copyrighted subject, or personal data.
- Choose the account mode. For personal use, turn off Improve the model for everyone or start a Temporary Chat. For work, confirm the workspace’s retention and administrator-access rules.
- Generate the image. Use the mobile
@→ Sketch path, then record the date, prompt, and source drawing if the project may become valuable. - Review every revision. Check faces, hands, lettering, logos, backgrounds, and unintended changes outside a selection.
- Clear rights before release. Verify permissions for people, brands, characters, client assets, and any licensed material. Do not rely on the OpenAI ownership clause to clear someone else’s rights.
- Save and preserve evidence. Download the approved file and keep the original sketch, prompts, versions, releases, and human edits in your project records.
- Delete when appropriate. If the source should no longer remain in ChatGPT, delete the conversation that created the image. Separately remove copies from shared drives, devices, and third-party apps.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Assuming “off” means erased: model-improvement opt-out leaves chats in history. Delete the conversation when deletion is the goal.
- Assuming Temporary means zero retention: safety retention can last up to 30 days.
- Using a personal account for confidential client work: use the workspace approved by your contract and organization.
- Trusting a selection boundary: inspect the whole image because edits may spill outside the highlighted area.
- Calling the result exclusive: output may not be unique, so avoid exclusivity promises.
- Ignoring the source sketch: the input may belong to a client or another creator even when you own the generated output as against OpenAI.
- Publishing an accidental logo or likeness: perform a human rights and clearance review before sale or advertising.
What to check before commercial publication
- The account or workspace was authorized to process every uploaded input.
- Your chosen privacy setting matches the sensitivity of the material.
- The final image contains no unlicensed character, logo, artwork, likeness, or confidential detail.
- You have documented client permission and any required releases.
- Your description of the creation process does not falsely claim that AI output was entirely human-drawn.
- You understand that OpenAI’s ownership language is qualified by applicable law and does not guarantee uniqueness or copyright registration.
