Yes, but not automatically. ChatGPT can be part of an away-from-home lighting setup when a configured integration—such as a Home Assistant OpenAI agent—has permission to control the lights and your home system is reachable remotely. The reviewed Home Assistant documentation describes an OpenAI route, but does not establish an equivalent official Claude integration. Treat Claude support as unverified unless the specific tool or integration you plan to use documents it.
What you need for remote AI light control
A conversation with ChatGPT or Claude is not, by itself, a connection to your bulbs. Away-from-home control depends on a chain of compatible hardware, an integration that can issue light commands, permission for that integration to act, and a secure route back to your home system.

- Connect controllable lights to a home-automation system. Home Assistant must recognize compatible bulbs or switches as light entities. Device and feature support vary. Home Assistant’s light integration documentation describes the available controls.
- Configure an AI integration with the required access. Home Assistant documents an OpenAI agent approach for interacting with devices in a configured Home Assistant instance. The agent’s access to the Home Assistant API is configurable; this is not a promise that ordinary ChatGPT can discover or control every device. See Home Assistant’s AI-agent overview.
- Enable remote access. The home system must be reachable while your phone or computer is off your home network. Home Assistant Cloud is one documented option. A manual Google Assistant setup is also documented, but requires an externally accessible hostname and SSL certificate; follow current security guidance rather than casually exposing a home server to the internet. - Authorize the account and confirm the action if required. For ChatGPT connected apps, supported actions and availability depend on the app, account access, permissions, workspace controls, plan, region, model, and interface. Home Assistant’s documented OpenAI-agent route can connect an AI agent to selected Home Assistant API capabilities. What the agent can do depends on how it is configured and which devices and actions are exposed. Home Assistant’s article describing this route is dated June 7, 2024; check current documentation for setup details and available options rather than assuming old interface labels or model choices remain unchanged.

Claude: verify the specific integration
The reviewed official Home Assistant material names OpenAI and Google AI providers, but does not establish an equivalent official Claude integration. That does not prove no third-party or newer route exists; it means you should verify that the specific Claude tool or integration supports Home Assistant light actions, remote access, and the permissions you need before relying on it.

Which light commands may work?
Home Assistant’s light entities support turning a light on or off and toggling its state. Depending on the device, they may also support brightness, color, color temperature, effects, and transition behavior. A basic on/off bulb does not gain dimming or color features simply because an AI assistant is connected.
Local control, remote access, and privacy
These are separate parts of the setup. Home Assistant says it runs on the user’s hardware, stores data locally, and communicates directly with devices when they support local protocols. Remote access and connections to external voice assistants are optional cloud-connected features. The privacy of a particular AI-control setup therefore depends on which parts communicate with Home Assistant Cloud, an AI provider, or another service.
