Start by identifying whether Windows 11 failed to install a regular update or a full version upgrade, then note the exact error code and when it appeared. For an ordinary Windows Update failure, Microsoft’s first step on Windows 11 is the automated troubleshooter in Get Help. For a version-upgrade failure, install pending updates for your current Windows version, restart, and check whether Windows Update offers the upgrade for your PC.
First, identify what failed
A monthly quality update and a Windows version upgrade use different installation paths, so the percentage alone is not enough to diagnose a failure. Record the complete error code, whether the failure occurred while downloading or installing, and whether setup returned the PC to its previous Windows version.

- For a regular update, open Settings > Windows Update > Update history and look for the failed update and its code.
- For a version upgrade, note the Windows version you tried to install and whether setup displayed a code or rolled back.
- If it appears stuck at 0%, 100%, or between 51% and 99%, record that detail too, but use the error code and failure stage to choose a repair.
Microsoft’s guidance for Windows Update stuck at 0% or 100% and Windows Update reaching 51–99% without completing installation is part of its broader update troubleshooting instructions.
Run the Windows 11 update troubleshooter
For an ordinary update error, begin with Microsoft’s automated Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app. It runs diagnostics and attempts to fix many common update problems.

Microsoft’s support pages may change their interface instructions over time; use the current directions if the labels on your PC differ.
For a failed version upgrade, prepare before retrying
If setup was installing a new Windows version rather than a regular update, first install any available updates for your current Windows version and restart. Microsoft says an upgrade may not be offered until that work is complete. Disconnect nonessential external devices before trying again, and back up personal files before taking any step that could replace or erase the current installation.
Microsoft recommends waiting for Windows Update to offer Windows 11 for the specific PC: its upgrade guidance says that the upgrade is offered after it has been tested and validated for that device. If setup rolls back again, record the code and the stage at which it failed before choosing another installation route.
Use the exact error code to choose a repair
Microsoft groups update codes by possible causes, but a code can occur in more than one situation. Open the current Windows update error-code troubleshooting page and follow the instructions for the exact code shown on your PC. Avoid applying every repair in the article indiscriminately.
| Example code | Situation Microsoft associates with it | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| 0x800705b4 | The update took too long to install or was interrupted. | Use Microsoft’s code-specific steps and retry after restarting. |
| 0x80240034 | The process may be stuck because of an incomplete update or a connection issue. | Check the connection and follow the page’s instructions for this code. |
| 0x800f0922 or 0x8007000E | Insufficient disk space. | Check available storage and use Microsoft’s current requirements and cleanup guidance. |
| 0x800F081F or 0x80073712 | Corrupted or missing system files. | Follow Microsoft’s instructions, which include the Windows Update troubleshooter and System File Checker. |
| 0x80246007 | Missing or incomplete download files. | Use the code-specific instructions; Microsoft’s page also describes update-service reset steps for this download-file case. |
| 0x80070002, 0x80070003, or 0x80070057 | The update failed to install. | Check the precise code on Microsoft’s page for the matching procedure. |
| 0x80070422 | The Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. | Follow Microsoft’s service instructions for this code rather than changing services at random. |
For missing or corrupted system files, Microsoft’s article includes System File Checker. If its code-specific instructions call for it, open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), approve the User Account Control prompt, and run sfc /scannow. Let the scan finish, then follow Microsoft’s stated next steps for the result. Do not run service or update-cache reset commands unless the current code-specific instructions call for them.
The troubleshooting page lists 16 GB free for a 32-bit operating system and 20 GB for a 64-bit operating system in its storage guidance. The page’s publication or revision date is not stated, so check the live Microsoft instructions rather than treating those figures as a guarantee of current requirements for every upgrade.

Choose the Windows 11 installation route carefully
Windows Update, the Installation Assistant, and installation media serve different purposes. For quality updates, Microsoft directs users to Windows Update in Settings. For a feature upgrade, prefer the validated Windows Update offer when it is available for the device.
| Route | When it fits | Important limitation or caution |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Regular quality updates and the upgrade offer validated for the device. | A version upgrade may not appear until pending updates for the current Windows version have been installed and the PC restarted; availability is device-specific. |
| Windows 11 Installation Assistant | Manually installing a feature update on a compatible PC. | Microsoft says it does not run on ARM-based PCs and recommends waiting for the Windows Update offer for the specific device. |
| Installation media, setup.exe run inside Windows | An in-place upgrade from the current Windows installation. | Review the setup choices carefully and confirm the intended option for keeping files and apps. |
| Booting from installation media | A fresh Windows installation. | This wipes the drive’s existing Windows installation, personal files, and installed apps. Back up first. |
Microsoft explains these routes in Ways to install Windows 11. Its upgrade preparation guidance recommends waiting for the offer validated for the specific PC. The Windows Update Assistant page describes the Assistant’s compatibility and use.

Before using installation media
Installation media is not just another way to rerun the troubleshooter. Starting setup.exe from within Windows can upgrade the current installation; booting the computer from the media to perform a fresh installation is destructive. Microsoft says that a fresh install wipes the hard drive’s contents, Windows installation, files, and installed apps.
- Back up files you need before beginning, and verify that the backup can be accessed.
- Choose the in-Windows setup route if your goal is an in-place upgrade, and confirm the keep-files-and-apps choice during setup.
- Do not boot from the media unless a fresh installation is intended and you have accounted for everything that will be erased.
Microsoft’s media instructions are included in its Windows 11 installation options.
When the problem continues
Use Microsoft’s Windows upgrade and installation error guide for upgrade-specific codes and rollback failures. For an ordinary update, return to the code-specific troubleshooting page and follow only the instructions that match the code and symptom. If you contact support, provide the full code, whether it was a download or installation failure, the Windows version involved, and whether setup rolled back.
