How to Choose a NAS for Secure Remote Access

Choose a NAS by the remote-access workflows it supports: compare VPN and relay options, verify app compatibility, and plan account controls before connecting from outside your network.

Choose a NAS that supports the remote-access method your apps and devices need, then limit exposure with a VPN or a vendor relay. For broad access to your home or office network, a VPN to the router is usually the more flexible starting point: connect to the NAS through its private network address rather than publishing NAS services directly to the internet. A vendor relay can be easier to set up, but may not support every workflow and can be slower.

Start with the remote-access method, not the NAS brand

NAS vendors offer different ways to reach files and services from outside the local network. Synology documents QuickConnect, DDNS and port forwarding; QNAP describes a VPN to the router, a VPN server on the NAS, myQNAPcloud Link relay and multi-site VPN options. These are vendor-specific workflows, so check support for the exact NAS model, operating system version and services you plan to use.

Compare methods on exposure, compatibility, setup effort, performance, control and the work needed to keep access secure. Manufacturer guidance can explain how a feature is intended to work, but it is not an independent security comparison or a performance benchmark.

Compare the main ways to connect

Method Exposure and control Setup and trade-offs
VPN to the router or private network Lets a remote device join the private network, then reach the NAS at its LAN address instead of directly exposing NAS services. Requires a VPN-capable router or another VPN endpoint and some network configuration. QNAP says router performance and features can limit this option. See QNAP’s secure remote-access guidance.
VPN server on the NAS Provides VPN access through the NAS, with configuration administered by the owner. QNAP describes this as more configurable but more involved than a router VPN. Verify that the NAS model and operating system support the VPN workflow you need. See QNAP’s security guidance.
Vendor relay service Can avoid exposing the NAS directly to the internet, but access depends on the vendor’s account and service. May be simpler than configuring a VPN. QNAP says myQNAPcloud Link can work without exposing the NAS, but performance may be slower. Synology says QuickConnect does not support every service. See QNAP on myQNAPcloud Link and Synology on QuickConnect compatibility.
DDNS or port forwarding Can make a NAS service reachable from outside, but may publish services directly and requires careful administration. Configuration depends on the router and NAS. QNAP identifies port forwarding and UPnP as risk paths and advises against casual direct exposure; do not treat either as the default secure option. See QNAP’s security guidance.

Check compatibility with your actual workflow

A remote-access feature is useful only if it supports the services and clients you intend to use. Before buying, list the devices and tasks that must work remotely—such as accessing files, using a vendor app, running backups or connecting to another network service—and confirm each against the vendor’s current compatibility documentation.

UGREEN NAS DH2300 2-Bay for Beginners & Personal Users, Phone Backup
  • Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
  • Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Do not assume a relay supports SMB, NFS, WebDAV, a VPN client, or every third-party app simply because it provides remote access. Synology’s QuickConnect documentation lists supported services and workflows, and notes that some network file-sharing and VPN-server use cases are not supported. Check Synology’s QuickConnect service list before choosing a NAS on that basis.

Match the method to your priorities

  • You need broad access to your LAN: Prefer a VPN to the router or private network, then use the NAS’s private address. QNAP recommends establishing a VPN connection to the router before connecting to the NAS over VPN in its secure remote-access guidance.
  • You value simpler setup: Consider a vendor relay if its supported apps and services cover your needs. Review account controls and accept that the service may have performance or feature limits.
  • You want to administer the connection yourself: Compare router-hosted and NAS-hosted VPN options, and check what the model and operating system support. A VPN still depends on the capacity and configuration of the network and devices involved.
  • You are considering direct access: Understand which NAS services would become reachable from the internet and how you will maintain them. Avoid enabling UPnP or broad port forwarding casually.

Use this buyer checklist before choosing

  1. Confirm model and software support. Check that the specific NAS model and its current operating system support your chosen VPN or relay method.
  2. Verify every required client and service. Check the vendor’s supported workflows for the exact apps, file access and backup tasks you need; do not infer compatibility from a general remote-access label.
  3. Choose where the VPN runs, if using one. Determine whether your router can host the VPN or whether the NAS offers a suitable VPN-server option. If you need LAN-wide access, use the VPN to reach the private network and connect to the NAS at its LAN address.
  4. Review relay dependence and limits. If selecting a relay for convenience, understand the role of the vendor account and service, verify compatibility, and account for the possibility of slower performance.
  5. Check security controls and ongoing maintenance. Look for available two-step verification, HTTPS connectivity, folder permissions, IP blocking, firewall controls and automatic blocking of repeated failed logins. Names and availability vary by platform and version.
  6. Plan responsible operation. Keep the NAS operating system and packages current, use individual accounts with only the permissions each person needs, and maintain a separate backup. No single control guarantees security.

Secure access also depends on how you administer the NAS

Remote access does not replace account security. QNAP documents controls including two-step verification, folder permissions, IP blocking, HTTPS connectivity and firewall-related settings; Synology documents automatic blocking after repeated failed logins. Confirm which controls are available on the particular platform and version you buy, and enable the ones that fit your setup.

Keep software updated and avoid giving every account broad folder access. A separate backup matters because remote availability is not the same as recoverability. The vendor pages describe controls and recommendations; they do not establish that any one setting makes a NAS secure in every configuration.

What the vendor guidance does—and does not—establish

QNAP and Synology documentation is useful for understanding their own features, setup paths and stated limitations. QNAP describes direct port forwarding and UPnP as risk paths, and says its relay may be slower; those are vendor claims, not independent comparative test results. The documentation cited here does not provide a comparable security score, measured throughput across methods, or verified model-by-model product recommendation.
