Can ChatGPT Learn Your Repetitive Tasks? Try These 7 Record & Replay Prompts

ChatGPT Record & Replay can turn a deliberately recorded Mac workflow into a reusable skill. Here’s how to check availability, record safely, and use seven prompts to plan, refine, and replay a task.

Yes—if Record & Replay is available in your ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI’s feature lets you demonstrate a workflow on a Mac and turn it into a reusable skill. You start and approve the recording, perform the task, then stop it; this is not passive, always-on monitoring. The documented feature requires macOS and Computer Use to be available and enabled, so check your app and workspace settings before you begin.

What ChatGPT actually learns from a recording

OpenAI calls the feature Record & Replay. During a session, it observes the actions and window content needed to learn the workflow. After you stop recording, ChatGPT or Codex drafts a skill describing when to use the workflow, its inputs, the steps to follow, and how to check the result.

In practice, “learn” means turning an intentional demonstration into instructions you can reuse. You decide when to record, approve the request, and stop the session. OpenAI recommends avoiding secrets and sensitive information, keeping the capture focused, and ending it once the workflow is complete.

Check whether you can use Record & Replay

  • You need a Mac and the ChatGPT desktop app.
  • Computer Use must be available and enabled for your account or workspace.
  • In the app, the documented route is to select ChatGPT with Work enabled in the switcher, or select Codex, then open Plugins. Choose the plus menu and select “Record a skill.”

Feature availability and workspace controls can change. If the option is missing, check your app and workspace settings; the documentation does not establish that it is available to every account.

Seven prompts for choosing, recording, and reusing a task

OpenAI describes a suggested prompt and invites users to add context; it does not publish an official set of seven prompts. These are adaptable examples, not official templates. Use them with workflows that are available in your environment, and replace the bracketed descriptions with your own details.

  1. Decide whether the workflow is a good candidate.
“Help me decide whether this is a good workflow to record as a reusable skill. The task is [task]. Its steps are usually [stable or variable], and success means [observable result]. Ask me about unclear steps or exceptions first.”
  2. Set the goal before demonstrating.
“I’m going to demonstrate how I [task]. Watch for the sequence, decision points, required inputs, and what counts as a finished result. The inputs that may change next time are [inputs].”
  3. Explain preferences that clicks do not reveal.
“As I demonstrate [task], note the preferences that might not be obvious from the clicks, including [naming convention], [field defaults], and [decision rule]. I’ll correct or add details after the recording.”
  4. Specify how to verify completion.
“When you turn this demonstration into a skill, include a final verification step. A successful result should have [observable criteria]. If you cannot verify one of these criteria, tell me what needs review.”
  5. Set a rule for exceptions.
“This workflow normally follows [usual path]. If [exception] happens, pause and ask me what to do instead of guessing. Include that exception rule in the draft skill.”
  6. Replay the skill with new inputs.
“Use my [workflow name] skill for [current task]. This time the inputs are [new values]. Follow the saved steps and report whether the stated success checks passed.”
  7. Refine the draft after reviewing it.
“Review the drafted skill against what I demonstrated. Add the missing preference [preference], clarify [ambiguous step], and keep the existing success checks. Show me the revised steps so I can inspect them.”

Record and test the workflow

  1. Open the recording flow: In the ChatGPT desktop app, select ChatGPT with Work enabled or select Codex. Open Plugins, choose the plus menu, and select “Record a skill.”
  2. Review the suggested prompt: Submit it with useful context about the task, its goal, and any inputs that may change.
  3. Approve and demonstrate: Approve the recording request, then perform one short, complete version of the workflow on your Mac. Explain important preferences or decision rules that are not visible in the actions.
  4. Stop the recording: Use the menu bar, overlay, or chat control when the workflow is finished.
  5. Inspect the draft skill: Check that its steps, inputs, exception handling, and success criteria match what you intended. Ask for refinements if something is missing or ambiguous.
  6. Try it with different values: In a new chat, ask ChatGPT to use the generated skill and supply the current file, issue details, date range, or other inputs. Review the result rather than assuming the steps succeeded.

Choose between Memory, Skills, and scheduled Tasks

These features address different kinds of repetition; they are not interchangeable versions of a single learning setting.

Feature What it retains or does How you use it Does it involve a recorded desktop demonstration?
Memory Saved memories and relevant past-chat context can personalize responses. Custom instructions can hold stable preferences. It can inform responses when relevant; it is not a recorded sequence of task steps. No.
Skills Reusable, shareable workflows that can include instructions, examples, code, resources, and scripts. Ask ChatGPT to use a skill and provide the inputs for the current job. Not necessarily. Record & Replay is one documented way to create a skill.
Tasks An instruction to run once later or on a schedule. Describe what you want and when, then confirm the proposed schedule. No. It is for timed execution, not learning a workflow from a demonstration.

Memory settings and availability can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace; Skills availability also depends on eligible products and workspace controls. The Academy’s personalization guide explains the separate roles of Memory and custom instructions. Use Record & Replay when you want to demonstrate repeatable desktop steps, Memory for relevant personal context, and Tasks for an instruction that should run at a specified time.

Make the demonstration reliable

  • Pick a stable workflow: Prefer a task with a repeatable sequence and a clear, observable finish.
  • Keep the recording short and complete: Include the necessary steps, but avoid unrelated activity.
  • Name changing inputs: Tell ChatGPT which values will differ on the next run, such as a file, date range, or issue details.
  • State decision rules and exceptions: Do not rely on clicks alone to communicate why you choose one option over another.
  • Check the draft and replay: A generated skill is instructions to inspect and test, not proof that the task completed correctly.
  • Protect sensitive data: Because the session observes relevant actions and window content, avoid exposing secrets or sensitive information.

OpenAI’s documentation gives examples such as filing an expense, booking a parking space, creating a configured issue, publishing a video, and downloading a recurring report. Those are examples of possible workflows, not measured results or guarantees that every account can perform them. The documentation does not provide a verified adoption rate, prompt success rate, or time-saved figure.
