Industrial IoT sensors send factory data to manufacturing systems through a chain: a sensor measures a condition, a device or PLC makes that value available, and a plant-side integration layer adapts and routes it to systems such as MES, historians, dashboards, or cloud analytics. The sensor is only the starting point; the value becomes useful when it is tied to the right machine, process, and production context.
What happens between a physical measurement and a factory application?
The path varies by plant, but a common architecture has four stages: measurement, control-system connectivity, edge integration, and production or analytics applications. Some systems combine stages or use different protocols; a cloud connection by itself does not make data meaningful or actionable.

- Measure a condition. A sensor measures a property such as temperature, humidity, or location. It may be mounted on equipment or measure an asset from elsewhere. The measurement is a value, not yet a complete description of what is happening in production.
- Expose the value through a device or PLC. A sensor may connect to a device or programmable logic controller (PLC). The PLC often represents or controls physical equipment and exposes sensor and equipment information using industrial protocols. IBM lists Modbus/TCP, S7, ProfiBUS, and ProfiNET among protocol examples in its manufacturing architecture overview.
- Adapt and route data at the plant edge. An edge gateway can connect devices, sensor gateways, and SCADA to an IoT platform. It may translate legacy protocols to OPC UA or MQTT, format values, and filter or aggregate data before onward transmission. A plant service bus can route and transform information to reduce point-to-point integrations; IBM describes it as complementary to MES.
- Use it in production or analytics applications. MES, historians, dashboards, and analytics tools can consume the data for condition monitoring, overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) analysis, forecasting, anomaly detection, or predictive maintenance. These are supported scenarios in Microsoft’s manufacturing IoT reference solution.
At each stage, the system needs enough context to identify which equipment and process a value describes. The OPC Foundation summarizes that distinction: “The OPC UA information modeling framework turns data into information.”

What do OPC UA and MQTT do in the data path?
They serve different architectural roles, and neither should be treated as a universal requirement for every factory.
#1 Best Overall
OPC UA: industrial information exchange
OPC UA is designed for information exchange across industrial sensors and actuators, controllers, MES, ERP, and IIoT systems—from device-level communication to enterprise and cloud integration. Its specification includes information, message, communication, and conformance models. That scope can help systems exchange structured industrial information across layers, rather than merely pass unqualified values. See the OPC Foundation’s overview of OPC UA.
MQTT: broker-based publish and subscribe
In a common MQTT pattern, field devices publish values to a broker, and applications subscribed to relevant topics receive them. The broker can run on premises, in the cloud, or in a hybrid setup. This is a publish-and-subscribe option, not a claim that MQTT is present or necessary in every plant. Inductive Automation explains the pattern in its MQTT overview.

Where should data be prepared and processed?
Factories choose where to normalize, contextualize, filter, aggregate, and analyze data based on their equipment, applications, network, and operational needs. An edge gateway can handle protocol adaptation and basic filtering or aggregation near the equipment; historians, MES, or analytics systems can then use data prepared for their purposes. Some designs also send data to cloud services, but cloud delivery alone does not provide sound naming, equipment context, or a usable production workflow.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesLocal and cloud processing also have different operational consequences. A design should specify what continues to work if connectivity to a remote service is interrupted, and which functions depend on that connection. Microsoft’s reference solution distinguishes analytics from critical action: its example pressure-relief feedback loop is illustrative, while a real deployment would perform a critical action such as opening a pressure-relief valve on premises. Cloud analytics should not be mistaken for a safety-control design.

What does an edge-to-MES integration look like?
Siemens documents one example in which shop-floor equipment connects through industrial connectors, edge applications stream events and performance data toward MES, and an OPC UA gateway binds live PLC values to work-order operations. This illustrates how telemetry can be related to a specific production task; it is an example architecture, not a required product arrangement for all factories. See Siemens’ OPC UA gateway configuration documentation.
How should a factory evaluate an integration design?
Compare the architecture against the plant’s actual equipment and operational requirements, not just the number of protocols or cloud services it supports.

- Compatibility: Can it connect to the installed sensors, PLCs, SCADA, and legacy protocols without disrupting existing control systems?
- Data preparation: Where are values normalized, filtered, aggregated, and associated with equipment, process, and production context?
- Local operation: Which monitoring or processing functions continue during a cloud or network outage, and what behavior changes?
- Information model: Are names, units, equipment identities, and relationships consistent enough for MES and analytics applications to interpret values?
- Security boundaries: How are endpoints trusted, transport protected, access authorized, and actions audited?
- Read versus control: Is the path for read-only monitoring, or can it participate in control? Treat any control path—especially one involving safety—as a distinct engineering responsibility.
What security protections belong in the design?
Security is part of the data path, not a final checkbox. The OPC Foundation lists OPC UA mechanisms including encryption, message signing, certificate-based authentication, access rights, and auditing in its OPC UA security overview. Microsoft’s reference solution documents certificate trust for OPC UA and TLS-protected transport. A deployment still needs to define trusted endpoints, certificate handling, permissions, network boundaries, and the consequences of any integration that can write to or influence equipment.

What equipment connects sensors to factory systems?
An industrial IoT edge gateway is a common hardware category for connecting plant devices and SCADA to IoT platforms. Industrial PCs can also serve in gateway architectures. The appropriate choice depends on the existing control environment, required protocol support, where processing must occur, and the security boundary; these are category-level roles, not a recommendation for a particular model. Temperature, humidity, and location sensors are examples of inputs, but selecting a sensor is separate from designing the integration path.
