What “without changing the face” really means
There are two different standards people may mean by “keep the same face.” The strictest standard is identical pixels: every pore, shadow, eyelash, and compression artifact remains exactly where it was. Generative image editing does not promise that. The practical standard is identity fidelity: the edited person should still be recognizably the same individual, with the same facial structure, expression, skin tone, hairstyle, proportions, and overall likeness.
ChatGPT’s image editor is designed to change the requested region while maintaining surrounding visual information. OpenAI describes the intended behavior as changing only what you ask for while keeping lighting, composition, and people’s appearance consistent across inputs, outputs, and later edits. The editor can add, subtract, combine, blend, and transpose elements, so the operation can be more specific than simply applying a filter to the whole photograph.

Identity preservation is strongest when the requested operation is local. A clothing replacement or removal of an object beside the subject gives the model a clear boundary. A broad instruction such as “turn this into a fantasy portrait” gives it permission to reinterpret the entire image, including the face.
The current model and fidelity context
The current API documentation describes GPT Image 2 as supporting image editing, with image inputs processed at high fidelity by default. That setting is important when a face must remain recognizable. OpenAI’s documentation also marks GPT Image 1.5 as deprecated and schedules its shutdown for December 1, 2026, so older instructions written specifically for that model should not be treated as the current default.
An archived OpenAI cookbook described an earlier input_fidelity control and stated: “When using high input fidelity, faces are preserved far more accurately than in standard mode.” The cookbook’s parameter examples are legacy guidance. If you are using an interface or API that exposes a fidelity choice, select the highest available input-fidelity option; otherwise, use the current model’s documented defaults and concentrate on a precise prompt and a clear source image.

A face-preserving editing workflow
- Start with the original. Upload the clearest, highest-resolution version of the photograph you can provide. A face that is tiny, blurred, heavily compressed, covered by hair or a hand, or partly outside the frame gives the model less reliable identity information.
- Choose one concrete change. Say exactly what should be added, removed, or replaced. “Replace the blue shirt with a black jacket” is safer than “make the outfit better.”
- Lock the identity explicitly. State which facial and physical details are not allowed to change. Include the face, facial features, skin tone, identity, exact likeness, expression, hairstyle, body shape, pose, and proportions when those details matter.
- Protect the scene. If the setting should remain the same, also lock the background, camera angle, framing, image quality, lighting, and shadows. This prevents a local edit from turning into an unintended reshoot.
- Define the permitted operation. Use wording such as “change only the jacket” or “remove only the person at the far left.” Do not combine a clothing change, a new pose, a new camera angle, and a dramatic style conversion in one request.
- Review the result at full size. Check the eyes, mouth, jawline, hairline, skin texture, ears, hands, and any area near the edit boundary. A thumbnail can hide a changed expression or an altered facial proportion.
- Recover from drift deliberately. If the face changed, undo the edit or begin a new conversation from the untouched original. Narrow the instruction and make only the correction you need. Keeping the original lets you identify which request caused the change.
A reusable prompt pattern
Do not change the person’s face, facial features, skin tone, body shape, pose, or identity in any way. Preserve the exact likeness, expression, hairstyle, and proportions. Replace only {{requested_change}}. Keep the background, camera angle, framing, image quality, lighting, and shadows unchanged. Do not add accessories, text, logos, or watermarks.Replace {{requested_change}} with one specific operation. If a detail truly may change—for example, the hair must be visible because a hat is being removed—say so rather than locking contradictory requirements.
Changing clothes while keeping the same face
Use a narrow clothing instruction: “Replace the sweater with a dark denim jacket. Keep the face, facial features, skin tone, expression, hairstyle, body shape, pose, proportions, background, camera angle, framing, lighting, and shadows unchanged.” The clothing example in OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance specifically locks those identity details and asks for matching light and shadows. Avoid requesting a new fashion style for the whole image when only the garment needs to change.
Removing an object
Describe the object and its location: “Remove the red cup on the table at the lower right. Reconstruct only the table and background behind it. Do not alter the person’s face, expression, hair, skin tone, pose, or clothing.” Mentioning the exact location reduces the chance that the model “cleans up” unrelated areas.

Changing a background
Define the replacement without changing the subject: “Replace the plain wall behind the person with a softly lit library. Keep the person’s face, exact likeness, expression, hairstyle, skin tone, body shape, pose, clothing, and proportions unchanged. Match the original camera angle, framing, and light direction.” A background edit still needs an identity lock because the model must redraw the boundary around hair, shoulders, and ears.

Working with multiple images
For a multi-image edit, identify the roles of the inputs in the prompt. For example: “Use the first image as the identity reference for the person. Transfer only the jacket from the second image. Keep the first person’s face, expression, hairstyle, skin tone, body shape, pose, and proportions unchanged.” This tells the model what moves and what must stay.
The first supplied image receives extra richness in the older high-fidelity recipe, which is another reason to place the clearest identity reference first when an interface accepts several images. Current model behavior and controls can differ from that archived recipe, so treat the ordering advice as a practical aid rather than a contractual guarantee.
Why ChatGPT may change a face anyway
The source does not contain enough facial information
Low resolution, motion blur, extreme compression, shadows, sunglasses, masks, hands over the face, and heavy occlusion leave fewer reliable features to preserve. Upload a sharper original when possible and avoid enlarging a tiny face before editing; enlargement cannot recreate information that was never captured.

Words such as “reimagine,” “make it cinematic,” “turn it into an illustration,” or “change the pose” can override an otherwise brief request to preserve the face. Replace broad style language with a local operation and an explicit list of prohibited changes.

The edit boundary crosses the face
Removing glasses, hair, a hand, or an object that overlaps the eyes or mouth requires the model to invent newly visible pixels. Even with a strong identity lock, that is a more difficult reconstruction than changing an unobstructed shirt.
Several people compete for attention
Multiple faces increase the chance that features, expressions, or identities are mixed. Identify the person to edit by position—such as “the person on the right”—and state whether every other face must remain untouched.
Successive edits accumulate unwanted changes
OpenAI says Images 2.5 follows specific editing instructions more reliably across longer conversations, with earlier changes more likely to remain consistent without degrading image quality over successive edits. That improvement does not eliminate drift. Keep a clean original, save approved versions, and make one logical change per turn so an unwanted facial alteration can be traced and reversed.

How to inspect an edited image
- Compare identity landmarks: look at eye spacing, eyelid shape, eyebrows, nose width, mouth corners, jawline, ears, and hairline.
- Check expression: a person can remain recognizable while becoming noticeably happier, older, younger, or more serious.
- Check color and texture: altered skin tone, makeup, smoothing, or changed facial shadows may indicate unintended retouching.
- Inspect the edit boundary: look around hair, ears, shoulders, hands, and collars for halos, duplicated strands, or blending that changed the face.
- Check the scene: verify that the camera angle, crop, background, lighting direction, and shadows stayed as requested.
If any of these checks fail, do not ask for another broad correction on top of the flawed output. Start from the original and state the failed constraint directly: “The previous result changed the eyes and mouth. Restore the original face exactly and change only the background.”
What is and is not guaranteed
OpenAI reports meaningful improvements in image editing, but its launch material lists multiple faces and some styles among the limitations. “Without changing a person’s face” should therefore be understood as a carefully constrained objective, not a mathematical guarantee that every pixel or facial detail will remain identical.
Large pose changes, heavy stylization, low-resolution inputs, occlusion, and edits involving several faces are practical risk factors because they require more of the image to be regenerated. A local edit, an explicit identity lock, a high-fidelity input, and a single clearly identified face give you the best odds, but the output still needs human review.
A decision guide for common requests
- Need a new shirt, jacket, or dress? Use the original photo, lock the full identity and scene, and permit only the garment to change.
- Need an object removed beside the person? Name its location and prohibit changes to the subject; restart from the original if nearby hair, hands, or facial features move.
- Need a new background? Describe the replacement and preserve the person, crop, camera angle, light direction, and shadows.
- Need a new pose, age, expression, or artistic style? Expect a higher chance of facial drift. Treat the result as a reinterpretation rather than an unchanged-face edit.
- Need to combine reference images? Label the identity image and the transferable element, then inspect every face separately.
In short, ChatGPT can edit a photo while preserving a person’s face when you constrain the change, provide a strong source image, and verify the result. The narrower the edit and the clearer the identity instructions, the more dependable the outcome.
