1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAutomated essay graders can find text that matches indexed sources and can flag passages that resemble AI-generated prose, but neither result proves who wrote the essay or that misconduct occurred. A similarity percentage is a starting point for checking sources; an AI-writing score is a probabilistic estimate affected by length, language background, translation, paraphrasing, editing and the detector version. A fair decision combines the report with the student’s drafts, notes, citations, version history, assignment rules and a conversation about the work.
What an automated essay grader actually measures
“Essay grader” can describe two different systems. A plagiarism or similarity checker looks for overlapping strings in material it has indexed. An AI-writing detector analyzes linguistic patterns and estimates whether some prose could have been produced or paraphrased by a generative model. The outputs answer different questions and should never be treated as interchangeable evidence.

Similarity or plagiarism reports
A similarity system searches indexed web pages, academic publications and previously submitted papers for matching words or sequences. It may highlight a quotation, a correctly cited passage, a common phrase, a template supplied by the instructor or genuinely unattributed copying. The percentage is the share of text that matched the system’s comparison sources; it is not a legal finding, an academic verdict or a measure of intent.
Detection is strongest when the original source is present in the service’s index and the student retained the source wording. A paywalled or unindexed article, a translated passage, heavy paraphrasing and ordinary phrases can all produce fewer matches. Conversely, a high percentage can be harmless when an assignment requires a standard prompt, a bibliography format or quotations that are properly marked and cited.

AI-writing reports
An AI report is an inference from style and language patterns, not provenance evidence. Turnitin describes its report as identifying prose that “might be prepared by a generative AI tool” and presents the share of qualifying prose its model judges could be AI-generated or AI-paraphrased. That wording matters: the model is estimating resemblance under its current conditions; it is not recovering a chat transcript or proving which tool, if any, produced the sentences.
Turnitin’s policy states, “Turnitin does not make a determination of misconduct.” A report can therefore be an investigation lead, but a teacher or institution must make the academic decision under its own rules and evidence standard.
How reliable are the results?
There is no single accuracy number that applies to every essay, language and detector. Performance changes with word count, subject, model update, proportion of edited or mixed text, and whether the writing is translated or produced by an English-language learner. Independent studies also use different essay sets and definitions of a false positive, so figures must be read in context.

| Evidence or condition | What it shows | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Submissions under 300 words | Turnitin says AI-writing scores may be less accurate at this length under its current model guidance. | Treat a score on a short response as especially weak evidence and seek process evidence. |
| Turnitin document-level test, 2023 | Turnitin reported a false-positive rate below 1% for documents containing at least 20% AI writing in its defined test condition. | This is a vendor metric for that test design, not a universal error rate; sentence-level and mixed-text results can differ. |
| Liang, Zou and colleagues, Patterns, 2023 | An average 61.3% of the tested TOEFL essays by non-native English writers were falsely classified as AI-generated. | Language background must be considered before a high-stakes decision; the result does not predict every detector or every learner. |
| Thirty-detector university-essay study, 2024 | Accuracy, false-positive rates and true-negative rates varied by detector and by English L1/L2 essay set. | Ask for results on representative student writing rather than relying on one headline accuracy figure. |
| Adversarial student-essay evaluation | Word and sentence substitutions could evade detectors while preserving essay quality. | A low score does not rule out AI assistance, and ordinary editing can also change a score. |
| STEM-writing study, Advances in Physiology Education, 2024 | The sample showed approximately 1.3% detector false positives; combining detector outputs reduced false positives, but no detector was perfect. | Aggregation may help in a study setting, yet it still cannot replace human review and corroboration. |
These findings point in both directions. Detectors can miss AI-assisted text (false negatives), and they can label human writing as AI-generated (false positives). Translation, paraphrasing, “humanizing” services and normal copy-editing can create either outcome. A score is therefore conditional on the text and model that produced it, not a permanent property of the student.
What a teacher should do when a report raises a concern
A defensible review separates source overlap from authorship and follows a repeatable process. The report should guide questions, not replace them.
- Read every highlighted passage. In a similarity report, determine whether each match is a quotation, a correctly cited source, common wording, an assignment template or unattributed copying. Check the original source rather than inferring misconduct from the percentage.
- Identify what the AI report actually covers. Note the detector version, minimum word-count guidance and whether the score applies to qualifying prose, a sentence or the whole document. Do not compare scores from different tools as if they used the same scale.
- Ask the student to explain the work. Request a plain-language explanation of the thesis, evidence, source choices and revisions. A student who wrote the essay should normally be able to discuss why an argument is structured as it is, while a student who used permitted assistance can describe that use.
- Review process evidence. Compare outlines, notes, drafts, citation managers, document version history and changes over time. Look for a coherent development of ideas, not merely a mismatch in writing style.
- Verify citations and sources. Open cited works, confirm that quotations say what the essay claims and check whether references are real and relevant. Fabricated or mismatched citations are stronger evidence of a problem than a stylistic score alone.
- Apply the assignment and institutional policy. Determine what kinds of AI assistance were allowed, what notice students received and what evidence standard applies. The University of Missouri says AI-detection reports “should not be the sole evidence” for reporting students or pursuing misconduct proceedings. Hofstra similarly warns that changing technology and inconsistent accuracy mean faculty should not rely on AI detection alone.
- Document the reasoning. Record the passages examined, the student’s explanation, corroborating materials and the policy applied. If the evidence remains ambiguous, use the institution’s normal educational or due-process route rather than converting uncertainty into a percentage threshold.
How students can respond to a plagiarism or AI flag
A flagged report is not automatically an accusation that has been proved. Respond with evidence about your work rather than trying to argue that a detector is “always wrong.”

- Explain your thesis, the reason for each major source and how a paragraph changed during revision. Be specific about grammar tools, translation, tutoring or generative tools you used and whether the assignment permitted them.
- Check every highlighted match. Show quotation marks, page numbers, links or paraphrase notes where the source was used correctly; identify template language that many classmates were required to include.
- If English is not your first language, say so and provide earlier writing or instructor feedback that shows your normal style. Language background is relevant context, not proof either way.
- Ask which policy, report type and model version are being relied upon. A score without the underlying passages and the applicable rule is difficult to answer meaningfully.
Answers to the questions people ask most
Can Turnitin tell if I used ChatGPT?
It cannot establish that fact from a score alone. Its AI report estimates whether qualifying prose resembles AI-generated or AI-paraphrased writing. It does not identify a particular conversation, prove that ChatGPT was the tool, or show who entered the words. A teacher would need corroborating evidence such as drafts, version history, source work and an explanation of the essay, while also applying the course policy.

Does a plagiarism checker detect AI writing?
A conventional similarity checker is designed to find matching text in its index. AI-generated prose may be original enough to have no matching source, so a low similarity percentage does not mean the writing was human-authored. Some platforms offer a separate AI-writing report; that report uses a different model and has different limitations.
Will paraphrasing fool an AI detector?
Paraphrasing can lower or alter a detector score, and adversarial tests have shown that substitutions can evade detection while preserving essay quality. Translation, “humanizing” edits and ordinary revision can also change the result in either direction. Deliberately evading a detector may violate a course rule, and a low score should never be treated as proof that no AI assistance occurred.

What does a 20% AI score mean?
It means the tool classified the portion of text covered by its report as having a degree of AI-like probability under that model’s criteria. It does not mean that exactly 20% of the words came from a machine, nor that there is a universal misconduct threshold at 20%. The meaning depends on document length, qualifying prose, model version, language background and the institution’s policy. A single percentage cannot decide a case.
Can a teacher accuse me based only on an AI report?
A teacher may ask questions after seeing a report, but a responsible misconduct decision should not rest on the score alone. The University of Missouri explicitly advises that AI-detection reports should not be the sole evidence, and Hofstra cautions against relying on AI detection because accuracy and technology change. Your local policy and procedure determine what happens next; preserve your work and request a review of the passages and evidence.
Are AI detectors biased against non-native English speakers?
They can be. In the Patterns study by Liang, Zou and colleagues, the tested TOEFL essays by non-native English writers had an average false-positive rate of 61.3%. That is a result for that study’s essays and evaluation, not a prediction for every detector, but it demonstrates why English-language background and translated writing must be considered before a high-stakes judgment.

How to compare an AI or similarity detector
If a school is selecting a service, the most useful comparison is not a marketing accuracy claim. Ask for evidence that matches the school’s actual assignments and review the governance around the score.
| Comparison question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What are the false-positive and false-negative rates on representative student essays? | Overall accuracy can hide errors on the school’s subjects, lengths and writing levels. |
| How does it perform for English-language learners and translated text? | Language background can materially change classification outcomes. |
| What minimum word count and document types are supported? | Short responses and unusual formats may produce less reliable results. |
| How resistant is the model to paraphrase, translation and adversarial edits? | Students can change wording without changing ideas, creating false negatives or false positives. |
| Are training data, thresholds and model updates explained? | Opaque changes make scores hard to interpret consistently across a term. |
| Does the report expose passages and evidence a student can answer? | Actionable evidence supports due process; an unexplained number does not. |
| What does the school’s policy permit the score to do? | A technically available signal may be prohibited as sole evidence or unsuitable for a particular assignment. |
A practical standard for fair decisions
Use similarity matches to inspect sources and use AI scores to decide what questions to ask. Then weigh the complete record: the highlighted text, citation quality, drafts and notes, version history, assignment context, permitted tools, language background and the student’s explanation. Do not create a universal “guilty above X%” rule. Detector models, supported languages, thresholds and institutional policies change, so instructors should check the current product documentation and local policy before relying on any report.
The most defensible conclusion is often narrower than the software’s headline: a passage overlaps an indexed source; a model found language patterns associated with AI writing; or the available evidence is inconclusive. Keeping those statements separate protects students, instructors and the integrity of the assessment.
