Ask Maps is designed to help you explore places inside Google Maps by answering questions with several real-world constraints, then showing suggestions on a map and helping you take the next step. It may reduce the need to jump between searches and reviews, but it is not a reliable substitute for checking important details: Google warns that its AI answers can be wrong.
What Ask Maps does differently
Google introduced Ask Maps on March 12, 2026, as a conversational feature in Google Maps powered by Gemini models. Rather than requiring a short place name or a sequence of separate searches, it is designed for questions that combine needs, timing, and context. For example, Google’s launch examples included: “My phone is dying — where can I charge it without having to wait in a long line for coffee?” and “Is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?”

Google says answers can appear as a customized map with directions, estimated arrival times, and tips. You can continue from discovery to actions such as saving or sharing a place, making a restaurant reservation, or starting navigation, where those actions are available. Google describes the feature as drawing on information about over 300 million places and reviews from more than 500 million contributors. Those are Google’s figures from its March 2026 announcement, not an independent audit or a measure of answer accuracy. Google’s March 12, 2026 announcement
How to use it for a place question
- Open Google Maps and select Ask Maps. The exact interface may vary by app version and region; use the Ask Maps entry point shown in your Maps app.
- Describe the whole situation. Include the kind of place, practical constraints, and timing. For example, ask for a lit public court you can use tonight rather than searching separately for courts, lighting, and evening hours.
- Review the map and answer. Look at the suggested places and any supporting details or source links. If a condition matters, such as accessibility or current opening hours, check it directly rather than assuming the answer has confirmed it.
- Refine the question or act on a result. Ask a follow-up to add a constraint, then save, share, navigate, or use another offered action. Availability of particular actions depends on location and feature rollout.
For travel choices, Google India gave examples such as asking, “Between driving down and taking a metro, what would be the best option at this time?” and “Which of these would be easiest to park in?” The examples illustrate the intended use: combine context and preferences in one conversation instead of assembling an answer from several individual searches. Availability and features vary by region
At launch, Google said Ask Maps was rolling out in the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop planned. In an August 6, 2026 update, Google announced expansion to Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and more than 150 countries and territories in English. That is the rollout status Google described in that announcement, not a guarantee that every account or device has access today. Check the current Maps app for availability. The same August update described several features with different rollout scopes:
Rank #2
- Live transit and more personalized responses were rolling out wherever Ask Maps was available.
- Remembering past Ask Maps conversations, conversational map contributions, food ordering, and hotel and event discovery were described as rolling out in the United States, with more countries to follow.
- For food orders, Google said users could find open restaurants along a route and review an item in a cart before completing an order. Google named Square and Toast as partners and described Uber Eats as planned.
These feature-specific announcements should not be read as universal availability. The update named no booking partners for hotel or event discovery. For India, Google’s March post said Hindi was “launching soon”; the August update later described Hindi support as rolling out. Neither statement establishes access for every user, so check the app’s current language and feature options.
Personalization has a data trade-off
Google Maps Help says Maps AI features may use location and account information, and that Ask Maps answers are stored and could include location. When Personalized Recommendations is enabled, Google says personalization may use saved Maps searches and directions, past Ask Maps conversations if Maps history is saved, saved lists and labels, your reviews, ratings and photos, Search history, and connected Google content apps.
Rank #3
Connected content is a separate consideration: Google’s August announcement says the Gmail connection for Personal Intelligence is off by default and user-controlled. If you want to understand or change what applies to your account, consult Google’s Maps Help page on AI-powered features and data and review the settings available in your app.

Google Maps Help says, “AI-powered answers can sometimes be incorrect.” Google advises checking important information in more than one place, following AI source links, and trying different versions of a question. That matters because an appealing map result is not proof that a detail is current or complete.
Rank #4
- Confirm opening hours and whether a place is accepting visitors with the business or venue.
- Check accessibility, lighting, parking, and entry requirements with the facility when they affect your plans.
- Verify live transit times, service changes, and route conditions in the relevant operator’s current information.
- Confirm prices, availability, and reservation details before travelling or paying.
When Ask Maps can replace a separate search—and when it cannot
Ask Maps is a useful starting point when your question combines several local constraints and you want suggestions and a route in one place. Google Maps VP and GM Miriam Daniel wrote at launch that previously, finding such information meant “lots of research and sifting through reviews.” That explains the product’s intended benefit, but it is not evidence that Ask Maps always replaces external research or produces better recommendations.

Google’s published material describes the feature and its intended capabilities, but does not establish through an independent controlled evaluation that it is faster or more accurate than the older workflow of Maps plus separate searches.
