Apple’s Mac Studio with M5 Ultra is a documented, orderable product with a US$5,499 U.S. starting price and configurations offering up to 512GB of unified memory. Xiaomi’s AI Cube, by contrast, is described in an October 1, 2026 report as a prototype, with no verified benchmark, confirmed price, or release date. That makes Apple’s system the more concrete local-AI option—but the available evidence does not establish that it is faster than Xiaomi’s device.
What does “tops” mean in this comparison?
The headline’s “tops” framing is not a result from a matched performance test. The available sources do not compare the two systems running the same model, quantization, context length, and software version, nor do they report comparable throughput. Apple publishes specifications for the Mac Studio; figures attributed to Xiaomi’s AI Cube remain unverified claims reported by Geeky Gadgets on October 1, 2026 (Geeky Gadgets’ report on Xiaomi AI Cube).

The practical distinction is therefore evidence and purchase status: Apple has published configurations, pricing, and announced shipment timing, while Xiaomi’s reported Cube lacks confirmed price and release timing. That favors the Mac Studio for a buyer choosing a system now, not as proof of a performance win.

Apple announced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio at a U.S. starting price of US$5,499 on August 25, 2026, with deliveries announced to begin September 22, 2026 (Apple’s Mac Studio announcement). Apple lists 96GB of unified memory in the starting M5 Ultra configuration, with options for 256GB or 512GB. The company announced the 512GB option for late October; as of October 3, that timing was still in the future.

Apple’s technical specifications list 1.2TB/s of memory bandwidth. They distinguish two processor configurations: a base option with a 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU, and a configurable option with a 36-core CPU and 80-core GPU. The starting price and processor counts should not be treated as one universal configuration: check the specific configuration and live price before purchase (Apple’s Mac Studio technical specifications).
Apple also claims up to 4.3× peak AI compute performance versus M3 Ultra. This is Apple’s stated comparison, not an independent benchmark of local model performance or a comparison with Xiaomi’s AI Cube.

What is known about Xiaomi AI Cube?
Geeky Gadgets’ October 1, 2026 article describes the AI Cube as a prototype and reports an 80GB memory figure and a claimed ability to support models with 120 billion parameters. The article also says those claims lack verified benchmarks and detailed technical documentation, and that no price or release date has been confirmed. These are reported prototype claims, not Xiaomi-confirmed product specifications.

No direct performance comparison with the Mac Studio is available in the cited sources.

Can the Mac Studio run large AI models locally?
Its large unified-memory configurations make the M5 Ultra Mac Studio a plausible system for running substantial models locally, but memory capacity alone does not identify which model will fit or how well it will run. The answer depends on the model’s parameter count and quantization, context length, runtime overhead, and the software used. The retrieved sources do not provide a model-by-model compatibility list or matched throughput tests.
Apple describes MLX as a framework optimized for Apple silicon and positions Mac Studio for on-device AI. Those are vendor statements about its platform and intended use; they do not independently establish ease of setup, privacy outcomes, or performance versus the AI Cube.

How much memory matters—and why bandwidth is different
Memory capacity and memory bandwidth answer different questions. Capacity constrains how much of a model and its working data can be kept in memory; bandwidth describes how quickly data can move between memory and processors. Neither figure, by itself, tells you the speed a user will experience.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start with capacity. Compare the model and quantization you intend to run with the system’s usable memory, allowing for context and runtime overhead. A parameter count alone is not enough to determine fit.
- Then consider bandwidth. A high bandwidth specification can be relevant to workloads moving large amounts of data, but it is not a substitute for measured generation speed.
- Demand matched tests for speed claims. A useful comparison should disclose the model, quantization, context length, runtime and software versions, and measured throughput for each system.
The cited sources provide none of those matched test results for the Mac Studio and AI Cube. Apple’s 1.2TB/s figure is a manufacturer specification, not a direct prediction of tokens per second.

Which system should a local-AI buyer consider?
| Factor | Mac Studio with M5 Ultra | Xiaomi AI Cube |
|---|---|---|
| Status and price | Apple announced a US$5,499 U.S. starting price and September 22, 2026 delivery start. The 512GB option was announced for late October. See Apple’s announcement. | Geeky Gadgets described a prototype; price and release date were not confirmed in its October 1, 2026 report. See the report. |
| Memory | Apple lists 96GB starting unified memory, configurable to 256GB or 512GB. See Apple’s specifications. | 80GB is reported by Geeky Gadgets, not established in a Xiaomi product specification. See the report. |
| Memory bandwidth | Apple lists 1.2TB/s. See Apple’s specifications. | Not stated in the cited report. |
| AI performance evidence | Apple claims up to 4.3× peak AI compute performance versus M3 Ultra; this is not a matched test against Xiaomi. See Apple’s announcement. | The report says the claimed ability to support 120-billion-parameter models is unverified; no benchmark is provided. See the report. |
If you need a system with published configuration details and announced availability, Apple’s Mac Studio is the substantiated option in this comparison. If your decision depends on the Cube’s reported capacity or model-support claim, wait for Xiaomi documentation and independent tests rather than treating the prototype report as a shipping specification.
What a fair speed comparison would need
Before calling either system faster for local AI, look for testing that uses the same model and quantization, matching context length, named runtime and software versions, and a clearly stated throughput measurement. Ideally, results would also explain whether the model fits entirely in memory and disclose settings that affect output speed. Until such results are available, the specifications support a comparison of published capacity and vendor claims—not a verdict about real-world speed.
