It does not list a measurement of the skull or brain. That is a limit inferred from the published list, not a claim about Oura’s internal terminology. Oura’s medical disclaimer also says the ring is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor or prevent medical conditions.
What does an Oura Ring actually measure?
Oura’s product information describes finger-worn sensors that track signals including heart rate, heart-rate variability, respiratory rate, temperature trends, movement and blood oxygen. The app uses those signals to provide wellness insights related to sleep, activity, stress and heart health. Oura’s technology overview does not list a direct measurement of brain activity, skull movement, intracranial pressure or neurological disease. That distinction follows from the published feature description: a wellness signal from a finger is not, by itself, a direct reading of what is happening inside the head.

Can Oura detect a brain problem?
Oura says the ring is not intended to diagnose or monitor medical conditions. A change in a sleep, heart-rate or other app metric therefore cannot establish that someone has a brain or skull problem—or rule one out. Oura also specifically says the ring cannot diagnose sleep apnea, even though it may provide sleep-quality insights. The company’s disclaimer, last updated July 14, 2026, states: “Oura Ring is not a medical device and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, monitor, or prevent medical conditions or illnesses.”

What is Oura’s Brain Health Check-In?
The Brain Health Check-In is an Oura Labs research study, not a diagnostic feature. It combines cognitive tasks in the app with ring data to explore relationships between physiology, habits and cognitive performance. Oura says the feature is not intended to prevent, detect, treat or monitor a medical condition, and names Cambridge Cognition as the provider of its assessments. Oura’s feature description notes that Labs features are early-stage and may change or disappear.

How long are the assessments?
- CANTAB One: a digit-symbol substitution task that Oura says takes about two minutes.
- CANTAB Insight: an optional, more in-depth assessment that Oura says takes about 20–30 minutes.
Those durations describe the tasks, not the accuracy of a diagnosis. Oura notes that performance can be affected by short-term factors such as stress, poor sleep or illness, and by longer-term factors such as health conditions or medication. A task score is not evidence that the feature can detect a brain disorder.
How are head or brain measurements different?
Different questions call for different measurement methods. For context, the FDA defines a cranial motion measurement device as prescription hardware with accelerometers positioned around the head to measure skull motion or acceleration; its classification says these measurements are not to be used for diagnostic purposes. FDA’s cranial-motion device classification is a separate category from a finger-worn wellness ring.

An electroencephalograph (EEG) measures and records electrical activity of the brain, according to the FDA’s device classification. FDA’s EEG classification describes another distinct device type and method. These definitions illustrate why Oura’s listed signals should not be treated as a brain or skull measurement; they do not identify which test any individual should have.

What should you do after a head injury?
Do not use an Oura trend or Brain Health Check-In result to assess an injury. MedlinePlus explains that clinicians evaluate a possible traumatic brain injury by asking about symptoms and how the injury happened, performing a neurologic examination, and sometimes using imaging such as CT or MRI. The clinician determines whether tests are needed based on the situation; imaging is not automatically required for every head injury. See MedlinePlus’s traumatic brain injury guidance and its overview of diagnostic imaging.
