To find out what went wrong, trace the run from its scheduled trigger through the agent’s tools and any approval gates, then verify the result in the system the task was supposed to change.
What “success” may mean
There is no universal definition of a successful scheduled-agent run. In Azure SRE Agent, Microsoft documents that an execution is marked successful once its work is handed to a thread. The agent can then stop, pause for approval, or encounter a failed tool call while the execution still shows Success. That is a documented behavior of Azure SRE Agent, not a rule that applies to every scheduler.

Keep three signals separate: the schedule fired, the agent or integration attempted an action, and the intended result appeared. A success indicator at one stage does not prove the next. Microsoft’s Azure SRE Agent workflow documentation describes the status behavior and related troubleshooting cases.

1. Confirm the schedule fired
Look for an execution at the expected time before investigating what the agent did. If no execution exists, check whether the task is enabled, its next run time, and its schedule and time-zone settings. Azure SRE Agent’s workflow guidance specifically recommends checking task status and next run time.

2. Open the execution’s thread or trace
Inspect the run record for a linked thread or an indication that no thread was found. In Azure SRE Agent, the thread can show the plan, tools called, and conclusion. Its scheduled-task tutorial also describes planning steps, tool activity, memory context, outcome summaries, and notifications. These details help distinguish a trigger from work actually attempted. 3. Check whether the intended action was attempted
Look for the relevant tool call in the trace rather than relying on the agent’s final sentence. If the action is missing, check the task instructions, selected agent, available tools, and autonomy or review settings. In Azure SRE Agent, Review autonomy can leave a thread waiting for approval.

4. Check integration, authorization, and delivery
A tool may be missing, disabled, disconnected, unauthorized, or unable to access the target resource. Microsoft’s Azure SRE Agent troubleshooting example for a missing email advises checking whether the Outlook tool was called, whether the send operation is enabled, and whether the recipient is locked to a different address. A disconnected connector can reflect expired authorization or lost mailbox access; missing resource data can result from insufficient permissions.
For other platforms, check the equivalent connector settings, credentials, permissions, recipient or destination, and delivery trace. A successful call to an integration is still an intermediate signal; it does not by itself establish that the destination received or retained the intended change.
5. Read back the destination state
Verify the result in the system the task was meant to affect: query the updated record, inspect the created artifact, check the sent message, or read back the external system state. Define “done” as an observable outcome, not a confident agent summary or a tool call that merely returned success. A recent benchmark paper defines false success as an agent claiming completion while programmatic environment state indicates otherwise.
6. Distinguish a legitimate no-op from a silent failure
Sometimes there was no eligible work, so no change was needed. A reliable task should record an explicit “nothing to do” result and enough evidence to show what it checked. That makes a legitimate no-op distinguishable from a missed trigger, blocked action, or empty or incorrectly scoped query. This is an implementation recommendation, not a universal platform standard.

The thread, status labels, and available evidence vary by platform. Azure SRE Agent’s interface and failure distinctions are examples, not a guarantee that another scheduler exposes the same records.
Why agent summaries are not enough
A 2026 paper by Laksh Advani, “From Confident Closing to Silent Failure: Characterizing False Success in LLM Agents,” examines false-success behavior in specific benchmarks—not the prevalence of silent failures in production scheduled agents. It reports results from 9,876 tau2-bench trajectories across eight model families and 1,879 AppWorld trajectories across four model families.

- In single-control tau2-bench domains, 45–48% of failures were classified as false success; in the dual-control telecom setting, 3% of failures were classified that way.
- Among AppWorld self-assessing coding-agent trajectories with explicit status claims, 75.8% were classified as false success.
- No evaluated LLM-judge configuration exceeded 0.65 AUROC on the paper’s tau2-bench false-success detection setup; the reported AppWorld judge result was 0.54 AUROC.
These are findings for the paper’s benchmark samples, systems, domains, and evaluation methods. They are not estimates for scheduled agents in production. The practical lesson is narrower: confident wording and coarse activity signals are not substitutes for checking the resulting environment state. What a useful success signal should prove
When configuring or evaluating scheduled automation, check whether its records let you answer these questions:
- Did the schedule fire at the expected time, and is a missing expected run detectable?
- Can you inspect the agent thread or complete tool trace?
- Are pending approvals, tool errors, and delivery failures distinguishable?
- Can you verify the resulting application state independently?
- Does the system retain enough audit evidence to explain a no-op or a failure?
Cloudflare’s documentation describes scheduled tasks and distinguishes scheduling from workflow use cases, but platform capabilities and status semantics differ.
