Can an Old Desktop Run a 24/7 Prerecorded YouTube Stream in India?

An old desktop might manage a continuous prerecorded YouTube stream, but only a real test can confirm it. Check eligibility, encoder settings, upload stability, and power before relying on it.

Possibly—but age alone cannot tell you whether a desktop will manage it. It must play your video, encode the chosen stream settings reliably, sustain the upload connection, and stay powered on. YouTube publishes no universal minimum PC specification for this exact workload, so test your own machine before depending on it for a continuous broadcast.

What an old desktop needs to do

A prerecorded YouTube Live stream is still an encoder-based broadcast: the computer sends the video to YouTube continuously. A PC that can play a file may still struggle to encode and transmit it for hours. The practical test is whether your particular system can play the source and maintain the selected output without sustained encoding or connection problems.

No processor, graphics, memory, operating-system, or upload details are given here, and no universal minimum PC specification for a 24/7 prerecorded stream is established. Treat the machine as unverified until you test it with the video, audio, settings, and network connection you intend to use.

Check YouTube eligibility before setting up

YouTube supports streaming with an encoder. The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days. Livestreams must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Check YouTube’s current requirements in Get started with live streaming before scheduling a broadcast.

Choose settings your computer and connection can sustain

YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates. They are encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or broadband plan can sustain them.

Output resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

Start with the lowest resolution that suits your viewers and that the desktop can handle steadily. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and choosing a quality that fits the connection; a speed-test result is a starting point, not proof of stability over a long broadcast. See the full YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance.

Encoder settings to check

  • Transport: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for secure transport.
  • Video codec: YouTube documents H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. That does not mean an older desktop can encode all of them reliably; use a codec supported by your encoder and machine.
  • Frame rate and keyframes: YouTube documents up to 60 fps and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds.
  • Rate control and audio: YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and documents AAC or MP3 audio.

For an older machine, prefer stable output over a higher resolution or frame rate that causes encoding trouble. Make any changes in your encoder, then test the resulting stream rather than assuming a setting is suitable from its label.

Test the complete setup before leaving it on

  1. Prepare the channel and stream in YouTube Studio. Confirm the channel meets YouTube’s live-stream eligibility requirements and create the scheduled or live stream. Use the stream key and ingest details shown in YouTube Studio in your encoder; treat the key as a password and do not share it publicly.
  2. Configure the encoder. Choose RTMPS if available, a codec the desktop can handle, constant bitrate, the resolution and bitrate you plan to use, a two-second keyframe interval, and AAC or MP3 audio.
  3. Run a representative test. Use the actual prerecorded video, including its audio and the kinds of movement it contains. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health.
  4. Watch both encoding and connection health. Check that the picture and sound are correct, the encoder is keeping up, and YouTube does not report a persistent health problem. A brief successful start is not enough evidence that a setup will remain stable through a continuous broadcast.
  5. Only rely on the setup after sustained testing. Keep the machine and encoder running during the test, and observe whether the connection and stream remain healthy over time.

Diagnose dropped frames and interruptions

In OBS, watch the connection indicator and dropped-frame counter. OBS says that rising dropped frames alongside a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Its Help Portal provides troubleshooting guidance.

  • Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
  • Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
  • Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
  • Dropped frames or a yellow/red connection indicator: Try reducing the bitrate and retest. A lower bitrate may help if the connection cannot sustain the current setting, but it will not cure every ISP, router, or power interruption.
  • Encoding cannot keep up: Test a lower output resolution or frame rate and a codec the desktop handles more reliably. Confirm the video plays smoothly in the encoder before leaving it unattended.
  • Wireless instability: A wired Ethernet connection can remove the local Wi-Fi link between desktop and router. It cannot guarantee a fix for ISP congestion or outages.
  • Power interruptions: A desktop UPS is an optional way to provide backup power; choose runtime for the actual load. It does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.

For an India-based setup, test at the actual location and at the times you expect to stream. The available guidance establishes no India-specific upload threshold or guarantee of continuous service; local sustained upload performance, electricity reliability, and provider behavior matter.

Know what a 24/7 broadcast does not guarantee

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingest addresses, stream status and health data, and conversion of a completed broadcast into a YouTube video. That documentation does not establish a universal archive duration or certify that a prerecorded loop will run without interruption. Do not assume a very long broadcast will remain available in full as a video-on-demand recording; consult the current YouTube LiveStreams API documentation and YouTube Help for the behavior relevant to your stream.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you do not want a desktop and home connection running continuously, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the video from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream.

The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India. To try it, start your free StreamNeo day.
