For a prerecorded YouTube Live stream, choose Normal latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. It is YouTube’s setting for non-interactive streams and gives viewers the least buffering. Use low or ultra-low latency only when the format needs faster audience interaction—and account for the greater buffering risk. For a channel or stream marked made for kids, live chat is disabled, so reducing latency just to respond to chat is usually unnecessary.
Where to change YouTube Live latency
The latency selector is available for encoder-based streams in YouTube Studio. Webcam and mobile streams are configured for interactivity and do not offer this setting, according to YouTube’s Live Control Room guidance.

- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live and enter the stream details.
- In the Live Control Room, open Stream or Manage, then select Stream settings.
- Under Stream latency, choose the setting that fits the stream’s interaction needs.
Studio labels may change. If you are streaming from a webcam or mobile device, the missing latency selector is expected; use an encoder-based stream if you need to choose latency.

Which latency setting suits a prerecorded stream?
| Setting | Best fit | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Normal latency | Non-interactive programming, including prerecorded video | Least buffering and support for all resolutions and live features. |
| Low latency | Some interaction, such as polls | YouTube says most viewers experience less than 10 seconds of latency. 4K is not supported. |
| Ultra-low latency | Real-time conversation where a host needs to respond quickly | YouTube says most viewers experience less than five seconds of latency. Buffering risk can increase, and 4K is not supported. |
The under-10-second and under-five-second figures are YouTube’s typical expectations for most viewers, not a guarantee for every stream or viewer. Actual delay can vary with the stream and playback conditions. YouTube explains that lower latency leaves less read-ahead buffer in the player, which can make buffering or encoder-to-player issues more likely. Network congestion can add delay as well. See YouTube’s latency options and tradeoffs.
#1 Best Overall
- [XLR Mic Input] One XLR microphone input interface is set on the gaming audio mixer, which is great to up your audio quality with your XLR setup. The XLR mixer is a stepping stone to upgrade your live streaming. Audio mixer offered built-in 48V phantom power which opens up more choices for mics. Directly use it with your condenser microphone but do not solve added peripherals. (NOT available for USB mic)
- [Individual Channel Control] Gaming audio mixer for one mic recording with smooth volume slider fader take your streaming recording to a whole new level with full pleasure. Four independent channels set on the DJ mixer give audio volume of the MICROPHONE, LINE IN, HEADPHONE, and LINE OUT channels individual control. Configurable on the PC audio mixer instead of just operating on your game or streaming software.
- [Mute and Monitor] The front mute and monitor buttons but not at the back, make it easier to get the audio interface use. Ability to mute audio, the audio mixer for streaming prevents background noise from damaging your live broadcast. Real-time feedback between speaking and hearing will not distract your attention, which encourage you to speak more confidently. The sturdy-built control button allow you to operate freely and easily during live streaming.
- [Sound Effects] The computer sound mixer supports four pre-recorded customized button that can be recorded and activated at the press of button to post production. 6 kinds of voice changing modes change your output style. 12 auto tune changes the tone of your voice. The podcast mixer being able to add different and fun effects is a huge bonus for your streaming or game voice.
- [Controllable Vibrant RGB] RGB button on the audio mixer DJ meets different live streaming themes. Lights on the video mixer is vibrant but not harsh on your eyes. Flowing or frozen RGB color rotation in a decent pace presents a greatly strong impression as a "light show" to your audience. Even a streaming equipment accessory will not be dull looking when video production.
For a prerecorded channel without real-time audience interaction, choose Normal latency. If the stream includes an interactive host segment, consider low or ultra-low only if the faster exchange matters enough to accept increased buffering risk.
What changes when a stream is made for kids?
When a stream or channel is designated made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and live chat replay, along with Super Chat, comments on archives and upcoming streams, and reminder notifications. Personalized ads are also disabled, although contextual ads may appear. YouTube lists these restrictions in its made-for-kids feature guidance.

- Analog mixing and equalization for pure sound
- Direct mixing of PC/gaming sounds into the streaming output
- Ultra-low noise analog mixer for streaming, podcasting and recording
- Stereo USB audio interface to connect your computer or mobile device
Because viewers cannot use live chat on a made-for-kids stream, ultra-low latency solely to let a host respond to chat comments has little practical value. Choose latency based on the stream’s other interaction needs, if any, and the tradeoffs below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesResolution and protocol can limit your choice
- 4K/2160p: YouTube’s encoder guidance says low-latency mode is unavailable for 4K; 4K streams are optimized for quality with normal latency.
- HLS ingest: Selecting HLS turns off ultra-low latency. HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency.
- Buffering: Lower latency means less read-ahead buffer, so weak or congested network conditions can affect playback more quickly.
Check the encoder and ingest settings before choosing a latency target. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance also recommends testing before going live with audio and movement similar to the actual stream, then monitoring stream health during the event.

- Compact, feature-rich livestreaming USB audio mixer provides high-quality sound for desktop audio production
- Plug-and-play connectivity to computer or mobile device (no special drivers required)
- Loopback function makes it easy to mix mic and instrument inputs with background music, game sounds, or other audio input from a computer – and send the stereo mix back to the computer for streaming
- High-performance A/D converter with resolution up to 24-bit/192 kHz provides crystal-clear output for voice and instruments
- Equipped with a single mic input (XLR or ¼"), two LINE inputs for guitar and keyboard, and USB-C input for connecting to a computer
Check live-stream eligibility before scheduling
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days to live stream. The 90-day period is part of YouTube’s current eligibility guidance, not an estimate of processing time. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips and eligibility requirements if the channel cannot start a stream.
Test the setting and monitor the stream
- Use the same encoder, resolution, ingest protocol, and similar audio and movement that the real broadcast will use.
- Run a test stream before the scheduled broadcast and confirm that the selected latency is compatible with the resolution and protocol.
- Check stream health in the Live Control Room while the stream is running. If viewers report buffering, consider whether a lower-latency setting is leaving too little playback buffer.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but the latency figures are typical guidance rather than a promise of a fixed delay for every viewer.

Troubleshooting latency settings
- The latency option is missing: The stream may be using a webcam or mobile workflow, which does not expose the selector. Open an encoder stream in the Live Control Room instead.
- Low latency is unavailable at 4K: This is a YouTube compatibility limitation. Use normal latency for 4K or reduce the resolution if faster interaction is more important.
- Ultra-low latency is unavailable with HLS: YouTube disables that option for HLS ingest. Use a supported ingest configuration if ultra-low latency is essential, or accept the higher latency associated with HLS.
- Viewers experience buffering: Lower-latency modes provide less read-ahead buffer and may be more vulnerable to playback or network problems. Try normal latency and test the stream under similar conditions before the next broadcast.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction has applied within the previous 90 days.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube channel that needs to stay live, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home.
