Usually not as a conventional, dependable Docker Engine host on stock Android. An old phone can run Linux server software through Termux, and Termux’s PRoot-Distro can work with OCI images without a Docker daemon. But that is different from running the normal Docker Engine, and Android’s background and power management make uninterrupted service uncertain. Whether a particular phone can stay available depends on its model, Android build, kernel, battery condition, manufacturer policies, and workload.
What do you mean by “Docker server”?
The answer depends on whether you need Docker Engine itself or simply want to host a service on the phone.

PRoot-Distro provides a Linux userland, not Docker Engine
PRoot-Distro runs a Linux userland on top of Termux without root or a kernel module. Its documentation describes using Docker/OCI images, assembling their filesystem layers, building OCI images without a Docker daemon, and running server software such as Nginx or PostgreSQL. That can be useful for experimenting with Linux services or image-derived workloads, but it should not be mistaken for a normal Docker Engine installation. Do not assume every image or service behaves identically in this environment.

Why conventional Docker Engine is uncertain on Android
Docker Engine relies on Linux kernel facilities. Docker’s troubleshooting guidance warns that it will not run correctly on kernels older than 3.10 or on kernels missing required modules. That is a general compatibility warning, not proof that any particular Android phone’s kernel is suitable.
A rooted phone or custom kernel may offer more control, but neither fact alone proves the required kernel features are present or that Docker Engine is supported. You would need to check the exact model, kernel configuration, Android build, and workload. There is no general recipe that applies reliably across old handsets.

Why 24/7 operation is a separate challenge
Android may defer background work
Android manages background activity to limit resource use. Its Doze and App Standby documentation says Doze defers background CPU and network activity when a device is unused for long periods. The exact effect depends on Android version, app state, and device implementation, including manufacturer-specific behavior. Leaving a terminal open is not proof that a service will remain reachable.

A foreground service does not guarantee an awake CPU
Android explains that a foreground service signals user-perceptible work and should not be killed merely to reclaim memory, but does not automatically prevent the CPU from sleeping when the screen turns off. A wake lock can keep the CPU running in relevant circumstances; Android warns that holding wake locks can have a dramatic impact on battery life. Neither a foreground service nor a wake lock guarantees network availability, prevents every process termination, or resolves heat, aging-battery, or hardware reliability concerns. There is no phone-specific evidence here to promise safe continuous charging, long-term battery health, thermal performance, or uninterrupted uptime.
How to decide whether your phone is worth trying
- Identify the device precisely. Record the phone model, Android version and build, processor architecture, kernel version, and battery condition. General Android or Docker documentation cannot confirm compatibility for an unspecified handset.
- Choose the runtime you actually need. If your goal is to host a Linux service, investigate whether it runs in Termux or a PRoot-Distro userland. If you require standard Docker Engine behavior, verify kernel support rather than treating OCI-image support as equivalent.
- Check the service’s assumptions. Confirm that its software and architecture work in the selected userland, and decide whether it requires standard Docker networking, isolation, or orchestration.
- Test availability on that device. Check service and network reachability over time under the screen-off and idle conditions you expect. A short successful run does not establish dependable 24/7 operation.
- Set the reliability bar before choosing the phone. A hobby experiment may tolerate occasional interruptions. A service that must be consistently available is better placed on a supported Linux host that meets Docker’s current requirements.
Bottom line
An old Android phone can be a useful low-stakes Linux-server experiment, especially with Termux and PRoot-Distro. That does not make it a conventional Docker Engine host, and Android’s power management makes 24/7 availability uncertain. If you need normal Docker operations and dependable service, use a supported Linux host; if you experiment with a phone, validate the exact device and workload rather than assuming uptime.
