What “run a 4K 60fps loop” involves
This means playing a prerecorded video file on the Mac, looping it in streaming software, encoding the feed and sending it to YouTube Live. It is not the same as watching a 4K YouTube video. Why an M2 Air is a plausible fit—and what is not guaranteed
Apple lists hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW, along with video decode and encode engines, for the 13-inch MacBook Air (M2, 2022). Its built-in display is 2560 × 1664, and it supports one external display up to 6K at 60Hz. Those capabilities make the workload plausible, not proven. The cited documentation provides no M2 Air-specific OBS benchmark for a continuous 4K60 loop, no guaranteed run duration and no thermal-performance guarantee. Do not assume every M2 Air configuration or source file will behave identically, or treat one successful short test as proof of uninterrupted long-term operation.

Set up OBS and YouTube for a 4K60 test
- Add and loop the file. In OBS, add a Media Source, choose the local video and enable Loop. Hardware decoding may be available and useful depending on the source format; check the control in your installed OBS version. OBS: Media Sources.
- Choose an encoder path documented for Apple Silicon. In OBS’s streaming output settings, select Apple VideoToolbox H.264 if available. OBS documents VideoToolbox support on Apple Silicon and H.264 streaming. Do not assume that every codec YouTube accepts is exposed by OBS’s Apple hardware encoder. OBS: Hardware Encoding.
- Set the output resolution and frame rate. Use 3840 × 2160 (2160p) and 60 fps if the source and workflow support them. A 4K60 stream requires a 4K-capable source to deliver genuine 4K detail; enlarging a lower-resolution file does not add detail.
- Match the bitrate to the selected codec. YouTube’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, gives these 2160p60 encoder bitrate values. They are encoder settings, not a guaranteed internet-plan requirement; allow extra upload headroom for network overhead and variation. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, and accepts live video up to 60 fps. Its guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Follow the codec-specific bitrate guidance for the encoder you actually use. Check the upload path and test before going public
Use a stable connection and check upload performance under the conditions in which you plan to stream. YouTube’s recommendation of 20 Mbps sustained speed for 4K UHD applies to watching 4K video, not to uploading a live feed. For the creator, the relevant starting point is the encoder bitrate above, plus headroom for network variation. YouTube Help: System requirements.

- Create or schedule an unlisted test stream and connect OBS with the stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private.
- Start OBS at the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval. Check YouTube’s preview before making the stream public.
- Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators while the test runs. Confirm that the file repeats as expected and that the feed remains healthy; YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health. - If the stream is unstable, lower the bitrate, reduce the output to 4K30 or 1080p60, or try another supported output combination. Test each change before depending on the stream.
Copyright and YouTube rules still apply to a loop
A prerecorded file does not become exempt from YouTube’s copyright or live-stream rules just because it is streamed in a loop. Use material you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s requirements for the content and channel before broadcasting. A technically healthy feed does not establish that the content is authorized or eligible under YouTube’s policies.

Troubleshooting a 4K60 loop
- YouTube shows no preview or receives no feed: Check that OBS is connected to the correct scheduled stream and that the current YouTube stream key is entered correctly. Keep the key private.
- Stream health reports connection trouble: Check upload stability and whether the configured bitrate leaves headroom. Reduce bitrate or output resolution/frame rate, then run another test.
- The stream runs but is not 4K60: Check OBS output resolution and frame rate, the source file’s actual resolution and frame rate, and YouTube’s preview. The Mac’s built-in display resolution does not determine the OBS stream resolution.
- The image stutters or the Mac struggles: Confirm the selected encoder and source format, try hardware decoding if available, and test at a lower output setting. The published specifications do not guarantee sustained results for every file or duration.
- The video plays once and stops: Recheck the Media Source’s Loop setting and verify that the chosen file plays properly on its own.
