What’s actually slowing this PC down?

If audio gradually slips farther out of sync with video during a 24/7 YouTube lecture stream, do not start by adding a fixed audio delay. First determine whether the mismatch is in the public stream, the local recording, or only your monitoring; then compare the offset at startup with the offset later. A steady gap and a growing gap point to different problems and need different fixes.
First identify which audio and video are out of sync
Check the stream from a viewer’s perspective, the encoder’s output, and a local archive if you record one. Listen to your operator monitoring separately. This helps locate the fault before you change settings:

- Public stream and local archive are both out of sync: investigate the capture, audio-source, and encoder paths.
- The archive is synchronized but the public stream is not: check the outgoing stream and YouTube’s stream-health information.
- The stream and archive are synchronized, but your monitoring is not: investigate the monitoring route rather than changing the stream’s audio delay. OBS forum users have reported monitoring-buffer behavior that can diverge from stream output, but that community report is not proof that every setup behaves this way.
YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder output and local archives when diagnosing live-stream problems. A recording is useful evidence, but it does not by itself establish that viewers received the same result.

Compare a recognizable spoken word or sound with the corresponding mouth movement near the start of the stream, then make the same comparison later. Note the approximate gap and whether it has changed. There is no universal drift threshold in the cited guidance; the important distinction is the pattern.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- About the same gap throughout: a fixed offset may be involved. A sync adjustment can be considered only after confirming which path has the offset.
- A gap that increases as the stream runs: suspect timing, clock, or performance behavior. A one-time offset may align one moment while leaving the later mismatch untouched.
Do not confuse capture-to-viewer latency with audio gradually slipping relative to video. Latency is how long the signal takes to reach viewers; changing a latency setting is not established as a repair for progressive audio/video drift, and lower latency can increase buffering.
Check sample rates and independent audio clocks
Make the audio settings consistent
Check that OBS and the audio devices use consistent sample-rate settings. YouTube’s live-stream error guidance flags an incorrect audio sample rate and multiple audio streams; it also recommends matching the sample rates of primary and backup streams. Check the encoder’s audio routing as well, so you know which stream is carrying the lecture audio.

Isolate devices with separate clocks
If you use separate devices—for example, a USB capture device for one audio source and a separate microphone—test whether the problem changes when you temporarily use one source. Audio devices can have independent clocks relative to OBS’s operating-system clock; according to the OBS asynchronous-audio-filter project documentation, clock differences can eventually contribute to buffer underrun or overflow. Matching the nominal sample rate does not prove that two devices share a clock.
If the evidence points to multiple independent devices, routing sources through one audio interface is an option to test, not a guaranteed cure. OBS community guidance describes this as a possible way to address separate-clock behavior. Change only the relevant source arrangement and compare results before adopting it for a continuous broadcast.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Review encoder output and YouTube stream health
While checking a representative test stream, review YouTube’s encoder error messages and the encoder’s own output. Look for audio sample-rate errors, multiple audio streams, source-routing mistakes, or unusually high encoder CPU load. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio, monitoring stream-health messages, and inspecting audio/video quality during the event.
YouTube Help’s live encoder settings guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Use that preflight to check the actual lecture audio and video path, not just a static scene or silent test.

Apply one change at a time and verify it over a representative run
- Save the current configuration. Keep a known-good copy so you can restore the stream if a change makes matters worse.
- Choose a test that matches the fault. Include the same audio devices, routing, and representative lecture content used by the 24/7 stream.
- Change one relevant variable. For example, correct a sample-rate mismatch or temporarily isolate one audio device. Avoid changing several settings at once; otherwise, you will not know which change affected the result.
- Compare the stream and archive. Check both near the beginning and later in the run, and inspect monitoring separately.
- Keep or revert the change based on evidence. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream quality; its cited guidance does not prescribe a universal long-run test duration.
If the stream cannot be interrupted, avoid experimenting on the live configuration without a recovery plan. Use a representative preflight or another safe test path, then schedule any change that requires restarting or rerouting audio.
Common causes and fixes to test
| What you observe | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The offset is nearly unchanged over time. | Whether the mismatch appears in the public stream, local archive, or monitoring only. | Correct the affected path; consider a fixed sync adjustment only if the offset is stable. |
| The offset increases during the stream. | Consistent sample-rate settings, independent audio-device clocks, and encoder performance. | Isolate audio sources, test a shared interface if separate clocks are implicated, and retest over a representative run. |
| YouTube reports an audio sample-rate or multiple-audio-stream error. | Encoder audio settings, routing, and primary/backup stream sample rates. | Correct the reported configuration and verify encoder output before relying on it. |
| Only the operator hears the mismatch. | The monitoring path and its buffering. | Compare monitoring with the stream and archive before changing broadcast sync settings. |
| The archive and stream differ. | Where the archive is captured relative to the encoder and outgoing stream. | Use both as diagnostic evidence, and inspect encoder output and YouTube health rather than assuming the archive represents the viewer feed. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If keeping a lecture stream running locally is the operational problem, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option for uploaded recordings and playlists. It does not go live from a camera, and it cannot repair audio/video drift already present in a recording; check and correct the source before uploading.
